I've done a search on the forums but I’m not really sure what I’m searching for in all honesty.

My mate is getting married in August and is all sorted out for photography etc. However I suggested that it would be quite nice to set something up where people could post their snaps from the day on a website for everyone to look at and share.

Coming from a web programming background I suggested I could probably set something up. We could issue passwords to people and keep the whole thing private to guests and selected people.

I’m quite game for programming something myself but is there anything out there which could do this already? Would Flickr be suitable?

Any links or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Why don't use something like Photobox (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=136) they do unlimited photo hosting for free and if people want to buy any pics they can do as well.
Also other people can add to it as well.

You can use Photobox (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=136). Or you could set-up a SmugMug account ( http://www.smugmug.com/photos/best-photo-sharing/ ). In SmugMug, you can set up galleries and both hide and protect them with a password. the former means that only people who know the URL can access it (generally good enough as the end of the URL contains an unguessable string of characters in the gallery ID) and the latter pops up a password request.

The advantage of going through a service like smugmug is that people can simply upload their snaps (or send them to someone to upload) and they just need to upload 1 size of picture. SmugMug will take care of creating the thumbnails, displaying the pics at a size adapated to the viewer's screen res and offer larger sizes if you allow it. It also allows comments and so on.

Also, you can upload and display videos.

However, that kind of convenience will cost you $40 a year (or in total if you didn't want to leave the pics up for most than a year). Up to you to see how that compares to hosting costs of a regular website and the hassle of setting it up and handling the display of the pictures uploaded.

My gallery is on SmugMug and I really love it. The public sees about half a dozen galleries of pics I took. But there is twice that amount hidden with family stuff I share with my extended family.
