Name that film

Years ago I saw this film on TV but can't for the life of me remember it's name. From what I can remember of the plot there was a nuclear attack on the US, the president ended up striking a deal with the Russians to fire back a similar number of nukes and that's about it! The only other scene I remember was some guys in a bomber being chased by fighters and to get rid of them they dropped a nuke behind them.

So can anyone come up with a name for this?

That does ring some kind of bell... I remember it being a good film and fanced seeing it again, I'll give that a try, see if I can get anywhere with it. Cheers

sounds more like Fail-Safe... , with Henry Fonda...

was it in black & white?

its been remade more recently with George Clooney and others.

Thanks people, strange I hadn't remembered it was in black and white but that is definitly the one. Was the remake called the same and was it any good?

yes, both good... both in black & white.

original has a very good cast if I remember..
though the remake one is pretty good... done LIVE on tv by Clooney & some of his friends... has an nice edge to it cause of this.

the henry fonda one is often on Sky cinema... only seen the GC one on DVD.
