View Full Version : Singstar - some questions
I presently have a 360 and Lips but am now seriously frustrated by the amount of songs on it so am thinking of moving to Singstar but have a few questions if anyone can help please.
1. Can you get wireless mics?
2. Can you change volume level of mics seperate to volume of music playing?
3. Can you store songs on your PS3 like you can with an xbox so you dont have to keep changing disks for new songs, so the songs get burned onto the harddrive so to speak?
4.How do you navigate through the songs to find one you like?
5. Are new songs expensive to buy and how can you pay?
6. Lips or Singstar - which is best?
7. Is Singstar for the PS2 or PS3?
8. Does the actual video to the song play on the screen like on the 360 and Lips.
Thanks peeps, ive found karaoke a great laugh at parties at mine but now need more songs then what Lips has.
I presently have a 360 and Lips but am now seriously frustrated by the amount of songs on it so am thinking of moving to Singstar but have a few questions if anyone can help please.
1. Can you get wireless mics?
you can theyre £34.99 in game
2. Can you change volume level of mics seperate to volume of music playing?
yes you can using the controller.
3. Can you store songs on your PS3 like you can with an xbox so you dont have to keep changing disks for new songs, so the songs get burned onto the harddrive so to speak?
you can buy songs off the psn store but songs on discs you cant transfer no.
4.How do you navigate through the songs to find one you like?
using the controller, there is an update coming out which will enable voice control.
5. Are new songs expensive to buy and how can you pay?
songs are like 99p each you buy them off of the psn store using a credit card.
6. Lips or Singstar - which is best?
i have both but id have to say that singstar is better due to its huge amount of songs on its online store, plus 6 disc based versions out.
7. Is Singstar for the PS2 or PS3?
its on both. but the singstore is only on the ps3 version.
8. Does the actual video to the song play on the screen like on the 360 and Lips.
yes it does.

I've just got a PS3 and was wowed by the 700-odd songs on the SingStore. I've played SingStar before lots of times but only ever on the PS2. It's much, much better than Lips.
Also, you can get the first two SingStar discs and SingStar Queen for £14.99 each from Amazon (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8). :)
How come some videos have the person singing on the screen, is it a camera?
AKPiggott
14-05-2009, 17:34
You can use an EyeToy camera with it to record your performances. It's not necessary though.
Thanks, do you have to record or can u just set it to show yourself on tv without recording. Im leaning more and more to the PS3 now for this, dont game much. Ive had a few parties now and we have exhausted the Lips songs, most of em we dont know or are rubbish.
How many new songs are released a week/month.

Another question - do you have to be able to sing to get good scores on singstar?
Also do any mikes work or do u need specific ones?

It seems to be a lot tougher to sing than any other game, so some pitch control and timing is required. It's nowhere near as forgiving as Lips.
Plus only the SingStar mics will work with the game.
Brad: I'm not sure about the camera mate as I've never tried it.
The singstore is fantastic, songs ive heard of and are proper karaoke songs.
Am I right in thinking the PS3 has wireless built in, so if I purchased a PS3 tommorow what do I need to connect to singstore on the PS3 and download and buy songs, do I need like a live account like the 360? Do I need to buy anything else apart from a PS3 and wireless mic set and some song disks, but id like to buy from the store and kepe them on the PS3 as well.
Do you access the singstore from your PS3 using my wifi network and pay via card? I want to purchases some wireless mics so ca i just buy these seperate and then any singstar disk for the PS3 and im away yes, I dont need a certain set up disk or something?
AKPiggott

Yep PS3 has the wireless adaptor built in. You do need a PSN account, but it's free. Easiest thing is to register on playstation.com, then you can also put your debit/credit card details in for the SingStore. You can then log-on via the console.

You need to buy the Mics and at least 1 Singstar PS3 disc. You access the store from within the Singstar software.

I picked up the wireless mics from HMV for £29.99

The Abba or Queen disks, can I not buy them online in the store so they can be stored on the console? Rather then by as a disk and have to put disk in each time I want to sing a song from them?
Can you defo not store songs from disks on the console?
You still have to put a disc in to load the actual software. All songs you download will be stored on the HD.
Dave
Another feature:
Via the Remote Play mode you can browse the Singstar Community & make purchases via a PSP too.
Thanks, so you defo cant transfer songs from a disk to the consoles hard drive?
You definitely can't.
Song selection is made from a carousel, when you put in another singstar disc only the songs that you have purchased remain, the tracks from the previous disc are exchanged for the new one inserted. Incidentally somebody above mentioned their are 6 discs in all but actually there are 21 released in the UK: 15 for the PS2, 4 for the PS3 & 2 others that are available in both formats, Abba & Queen. Before you make mass purchases from the store it's worth checking out the PS2 disc track listings. I bought 4 or 5 tracks last week, that all turned out to be on SingStar Rocks! which is available brand new for around £10-15.
Also as much as a fan as I am of SingStar, it should be pointed out that in the past 2 weeks the stability of the community/store has been very poor & you may find yourself disconnected frequently. Thankfully my issues have been minor but for others it seems never ending at the minute.
OK ta, do I have to go online so to speak to us ethe songs I buy from singstore and download to my console, i mena say the next day after purchase i fancy a sing, do i hav to go online or can u sing the purchased and downloaded songs offline.
Are they about 99p each then or can u buy credits or something to make them cheaper.

I'm very rarely not logged in to the PSN, regardless of whether I'm watching a film etc. Once you've purchased tracks, you can set them all to download in a queue & return to singing. The carousel will update with a completed download each time you've finished a song & are returned to the selection.

All the songs are 99p. Unfortunately no Universal tracks appear in the store unlike in Lips (there are some on the discs), this is due to UMG wanting more royalties & Sony refusing to price individual songs higher than 99p. Am I right in thinking that tracks are dearer for Lips? I was under the impression the points worked out around £1.20 barring cheap/bulk points card purchases etc. And that individual track prices may vary?
Also you can create a US PSN account & download tracks from there (if you have the means to pay) which will play on your UK PS3. Some songs are licensed for the US store & not the UK one.... eg Alphabeat & previously with the exchange rate it worked out at about 75p, now it's about a penny more.

Excellent thanks, last question, not sure its been answered, say for example the new queen disk out, rather then buy the disk can i buy it via the singstore so its downloaded onto my console. Im just thinking i could end up with hundreds of disks surely as theres a few singstar disks out after a quick ebay scan.
So all songs on the disks you can also buy in the singstore too yes?
So all songs on the disks you can also buy in the singstore too yes?
No. A lot of them are but I'd be surprised if on average it equated to more than 5-10 per disc and there are usually around 25-30 songs per disc. There are two Queen Songpacks in the store:
Ultimate Queen 1:
Bohemian Rhapsody
One Vision
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Killer Queen
Bicycle Race
Ultimate Queen 2:
We Will Rock You
Another One Bites The Dust
Who Wants To Live Forever
I Want It All
We Are The Champions
I think they are £4.50 each.
edit: Nb I'm pretty sure the songs can't be bought individually.
Will Singstar disks for the PS2 work on the PS3, also is thre a list somewhere of all the disks out so far so I can go through them all and have a record of what ive bought and whats left to get etc. Ebay brings up loads and what looks like hundreds of different singstar disks.
Long shot too but anyone know the lead length on the PS3 eye toy, I ask as my PS3 will be behind the singers connected to the projector so ill have to run a lead for the eye toy in front of them about 4 metres, is it long enough and if not what lead type is it incase I can get an extension or something.

List of SingStar releases with track listing at Wiki for PS2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SingStar_Pop#Internationally_released) and PS3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SingStar_titles_(PlayStation3)).
The PS2 disks now work on the PS3 as long as you have at least one PS3 version of SingStar to boot from afaik. Obviously the older PS3 systems with PS2 game support will support these disks natively anyway.
As for the EyeToy or PSEye, standard USB extension cables will do the job for you so I wouldn't worry too much unless you're talking silly distances.
Good luck and enjoy!
Cheers for that guys, im picking up my PS3 and wireless mics and a copy of queen this afternoon, ive created an account with playstation, anything else I need to do or purchase, cables etc, do i just connect PS3 via HDMI cable yes, to get going and get songs online too?
I also picked up an eye toy so maybe one day ill be brave enough to broadcast it.

HDMI cable (which I think comes in the box on the 80GB version) and have your wifi access details to hand and you should be golden! Be prepared for a few updates when you first boot up though, best to get these out of the way asap.
Still tempted to pick up the wireless mics myself actually, hmmm....

I have the wired ones already although one of them is a little dodgy at times so I was thinking about replacing them with the wireless versions as the wires are so long they get everywhere! Would be annoying to run out of batteries though during a drinking session....
Each song i download is about 50mb yes, my hard drive is 80gb, im not gonna get all the songs I want on my hard drive am I, or am I being a PS3 virgin?

You weren't kidding about singstore connection dropping, bloody hell. Is there any way of previewing the song as you move the selection over it like lips rather then to select the song then listen then go back to menu?
Argh bloody hell, cant even get 1 song bough without it losing connection, my nets/wifi is fine its the stupid singstore, anything I can do.
Can I login to my singstore account online on my pc, buy the songs then when i switch on my PS3 and login to singstore they will download?
Change your DNS on your PS3 to OpenDNS, that helped with mine.
I used -
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Thanks Dave but where do I change that cheers? Is it in system settings?
It's in the Network settings.

'I don't wanna miss a thing': Not on any of the discs I own & google appears to suggest no too. Sorry.

Human is on the PS3 Pop Edition disc (didn't you say you had bought that one?) & Mr Brightside is on the PS3 Singstar Vol.1 disc.

Well I can't see it listed here:

As for the video, assuming I found the one you're referring to*, at no point does it show the SingStar screen & the audio track is barely audible. Almost certainly they're just playing the track through another device (looks like a laptop in front of them) & they're singing with the mics through SingStar, whilst having no menu music playing.

Very late to the game I know, but having been recommended Guitar Hero and then Rock Band, and loving them both, I'm now the lucky owner of a second hand Singstar game! (Volume 2) - it even came with 2 wired mics.
Bad karaoke, here I come. :)
Had a quick look at the Singstore - seems to cater to the 80s pop kid in me what with all the A-ha, Duran Duran and so on, so I'm well pleased.

I have some questions!
1. What does it mean when it says at the bottom left of the Singstore "1 of 2" witha little downwards pointing arrow? I can't seem to work my way onto a second page, which is what I assumed it meant.
2. If I select 'duet' mode, can I only sing the songs that say 'duet' above them, or can I sing any of them? Conversely, can I sing solo on the 'duet' songs?
3. When I purchase a song, can I then quit the game and it keeps downloading in the background? I expected to see the song downloading under 'download management' on the PS3 front-end menu like when I purchase songs for Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but there was no indication there that I was downloading anything at all.
4. For a game that has 700 songs, I could only find 3 HD videos! Is this right, or was I looking in the wrong place? I can't believe all the music videos are in standard def.
5. Is there a knack to the timing of the singing? Quite often when I sing, it's like the first 10 - 20% of the blue bar that fills up when you sing is empty, like I've started singing 1/2 a second too late. But I'm singing perfectly (to my ears anyway) in time with the music. I ran the auto-callibrate feature initially (playing on a 42" plasma TV).
Thanks very much to the Pro-Singstar guys who can help me! :)
Question 1 is the songs downloading you bought. ( I think) Is it a progressing bar.

AKPiggott
18-05-2009, 14:24
Sorry, rather uninformed answers:
2) I'm pretty sure you can.
3) I believe it's the same as Home and BD Live, where the content is only downloadable once you have the application open. Sucks really. :|
4) I know HD vids are in the vast minority, but 3 seems a little low! I guess it makes sense for older songs, but you'd think everything new and spangly will be in HD.
5) Are you finding similar probs with Rock Band? It could just be the calibration of the game like you say.
I had to send my mics back so haven't been able to play it much, also got Queen and SingStar II on my way to me.
What's everyone's PSN IDs? I'm tone217 if anyone wants to add me. :)

Another question -
I managed to grab hold of a super-duper cheap copy of Singstar Abba for £7 yesterday, but when I put it in the PS3, it tried to get me to update it to version 3.01 - the only problem is when I accept this, it takes about 1/2 an hour to do 5% and then crashes. :(
However, if I put in my Singstar Vol.2 disc first, then press select on my controller to put a different disc in, I can put the Abba disc in and it reads it fine.
Do I actually need to run this independent Abba disc patch or not?

Changing the PS3's internal clock to 21 May and then launching the game will achieve the same result for those who missed it.
If you do the same thing for 25 December you will get another trophy too.

Counts as circumventing the system (ie cheating) in my opinion, and I don't like to do that with games. :) Certainly not for the sake of a sodding trophy, anyway!

Fair enough. There are far worse things you can do as far as cheating goes in SingStar, but I should add that I was merely pointing out this option was available for those that missed it and cannot be bothered to wait a year.
I had to do them this way because: a) I was in Australia on 21 May, and; b) I will be at my parents house on 25 December (and they live miles out of London).
