VCD Playback on dvd players

Assuming that the cdr in question is not set up as a VCD, ie without the extra directories on top of the one with the mpg file, is there any way a standalone dvd player can play a mpg file on a disc?

It needs to be a player capable of playing the raw mpeg file. I've heard some chinese players can, although I can't remember specific brands off hand. Otherwise you need to burn the cd as a VCD.

the el cheapo dansai 852 player from Tescos plays mpegs on the disc without being in the VCD format, just found that out after playing a disc full of music vids.
