hi, after a lot searching behind settes and stuff, i have managed to raise £350, i was looking at the marantz 4200, which at £250 most people reckoned was a corker, just want to know what is the corker at £350, i need good stereo and home cinema performance.

any tips?

DSPAX-620, Usual Yamaha DSP modes, loads of inputs(S-Video,Composite,Component(!)).
Front AV inputs for PS2(Inc Tos link)

£349.99 or less

To twist a quote from Splobber "I like the company so much, I bought an amp"

Needless to say I'm :D with mine

Steer clear of the Sony if you are after a decent stereo amp.

If you want a decent stereo amp, you could say steer clear of all budget AV receivers.

It's a matter of opinion as to whether the Sony is good or bad, and what price you judge it at.
For 500 quid I think it's average in stereo, average on features (no DPL2) but good for movies (however there are probably better all round alternatives available IMO).
For 300 quid, which some people have been able to get them for recently, it shoots up the charts pretty quickly.

One of the problems of just saying the Sony is not a great stereo amp, is it gives no frame of reference - ie not great compared to what?
I certainly think it's on a par with other products of it's ilk, but is perhaps a bit more fussy about the type of kit you partner it with.
Bright sounding DVD players (at least for CD) and speakers which tend towards brightness are probably not a great match.
But match it up with the right kit and overall it's probably as capable in stereo (or just as bad, depending how you look at it :) ) as most other AV amps in the 300-400 quid range.

For the price you are looking at i'd honestly say nothing comes close to the one retronana suggested, i've heard similar priced amps/receivers from Pioneer, Sony, Teac, Denon and none have matched the Yamaha DSP AX620 for it's movie playback quality, can't say i've heard the Marantz one that's being talked about but they do make fine audio amps.

Get yerself down to your nearest Richer Sounds (warn 'em first) and audition a few amps...take some dvd's, cd's and your own speakers if you want and let your ears do the deciding.

Well my primary concern is stereo performance, and home cinema separate, is the marantz or the yamaha comparable to a £200 stereo amp? i have heard the marantz is better at stereo than home cinema and the yamaha the opposite.

i need something to last for a few years so i want to make the right decision, where have u guys seen the sony 1070 for £300!!

cheers

Home cinema heaven do the 6200 for £400. Someone might advise whether that extra £50 is worth spending. There is a thread on the 5200 elsewhere in the Hardware forum, if that helps.
