Announced last E3 but to little fanfare since, lot's of game media outlets have finally had hands-on access to Zipper Interactives long-awaited* first PS3 outing, the 256 player, infantry-based Planetscape-esque M.A.G.

There's been a fair amount of positive impressions put out there today:

Forget SOCOM: Confrontation -- this is the next-gen SOCOM, only taken to a whole new level.

From a personal perspective, I've got to say that I came away impressed. I'm a long-time Battlefield player and love first-person shooters as a whole, and MAG nailed it in all the right places for a competitive shooter. A solid framerate ("at least 30fps at all times"), no lag, responsive controls, a great command structure, and a persistent world where your actions contribute to your faction's ultimate goal of ruling the world, makes for what could be the top shooter of the year, on any console. Modern Warfare 2, I hope you're listening -- this is the one to beat.

It's nice of Byrne to defer credit to his publishing, platform-holding paymasters. But there's plenty in MAG Sony can't take credit for. The superb tuning and tactile punch of the weapons; the expert finesse of the map design; the relentless pace of the battles; the perfectly-balanced tightrope-walk between order and chaos, between tactical primacy and player freedom. With alpha coming to a close, news of a public beta expected soon and release towards the end of the year, MAG looks fighting-fit already, and PS3 could soon have a multiplayer shooter that will be the envy of all.

If you were hoping for MAG to turn the fundamentals of the first-person shooter genre on its ear, you'll likely wind up disappointed. But if you were looking for a familiar approach to shooter gameplay on a ridiculously huge scale, you're in luck--it seems that's just where MAG is headed. We had a fun time with it, but we're eager to experience a full-capacity match to see just how intense it will be. You can expect plenty more coverage on MAG leading up to its release in late 2009.

I can just imagine now the anarchy in trying to keep up with a pre-match thread, who's available & trying to pick the clan team for a 128 v 128 match. :D

Roll on the Beta test!

*Well long awaited by those who enjoyed Socom on PS2, admittedly that's probably only Cinq & I here! Oh and no Socom: Confrontation wasn't made by Zipper.

and gothi as well, although he's attached to his 360 these days.....

Looking forward to giving this a go, will be interesting to see how the 256 players action goes. As you said, roll on the beta

I'd be more impressed if it supported 257 players

it does look awesome, it;s not 128 vs 128 though is it? I beleive it's several smaller battles with a common goal.

It's taken a while but those ps3 exclusives are finally starting to come good.
