View Full Version : Album of the year...so far
Just wondering what people think.
I've been listening to the new Doves cd non stop since it came out. This is quite remarkable because I've never been fussed about them before, but something compelled me to buy it.
Kingdom of Rust would get my vote as it is, quite simply, wonderful. It is this year's Seldom Seen Kid, but better. I think this will be their year.
Any other thoughts.
Oh, and new discoveries of pre 2009 albums don't count, nor do anticipated future releases of your favourite artists.
Not so sure about album of the year, nothing has jumped out at me yet, but the albums I've been playing the most lately are Obits - I blame you and The Rakes - Klang.
Doves also, have been a fan since day one. First two albums I can still listen to now and they sound fresh, third was good but not quite up to the standard set by the first two. Kingdom of Rust is a fantastic album, really loving Winter Hill (next single) and Jetstream too.
Can see the Elbow comparisons (been going ages, underrated by the media till now) but apart from Newborn and Grounds for Divorce I just 'don't get' Elbow at all and I have tried many a time.

No 1986 by the sounds of it.
Tie between Doves and the Super Furries for me.

No 1986 by the sounds of it.
hehe! Probably why I like it so much! I don't think they were even born in 1986!
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, album of the year, no contest!
White Lies still the best album for me, although it's been a great year so far with Depeche Mode, Doves, & Yeah Yeah Yeahs producing good albums too.
Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know.

My choice too. With special mentions to the Yeah,Yeah,Yeahs, Super Furrys and N.A.S.A.
Still finding the Doves to be good but not brilliant 7/10. It loses it's way in the middle with too many slowies.
PJ Harvey & John Parish - A Woman A Man Walked By... outstanding and Black Hearted Love is the song-of-the-year-so-far by a country mile.
My choice if album of the year so far is Crack the Skye by Mastodon.

I think for me it's Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

My fave album this year by a long way is Howling Bells - Radio Wars, must've listened to it start to finish at least 20 times now.
Other notable mentions though go to Super Furries, Delta Spirit, White Lies and Empire of the Sun (although I believe this may have come out at the end of 2008).

'textures'?
 It's a good way of describing a certain approach to music making. I've certainly heard other people using that word, but often more to describe certain types of electronic music. (And, as I've argued before, you can hear the dance connection in some of Doves' music.)
Doves also, have been a fan since day one. First two albums I can still listen to now and they sound fresh, third was good but not quite up to the standard set by the first two. Kingdom of Rust is a fantastic album, really loving Winter Hill (next single) and Jetstream too.

I was exactly the same.
Loved Newborn, first album did nothing for me and never bothered again.
Tried SSK a few months ago, and though it did nothing obvious for me, I kept going back without knowing why. Love it now.
Newsom is a warbler I can never understand the love for.

Fever Ray for me - just extraordinary. But my copy of Sounds of the Universe has just arrived, so I'm fully prepared for that to bump it...
Another vote for Sounds of the Universe.
I've become hooked after about the third listen. Amazing for an album to go from "um, not sure" to giving me withdrawal symptoms so quickly. Plus I'm something of a fan of course...
Other maybe's are Royksopp and Lily Allen.
Oops, I forgot about Lily Allen. Another definite contender.

Well Pains of Being Pure At Heart is clearly going to walk the end-of-year poll cos it's head and shoulders above anything else in my list.
Trailing in its wake by some distance is Broken Family Band, Aidan Moffatt, as well as Red Light Company and The Answering Machine.

Even though I posted earlier on in this thread (picking the Metric album), an album that came out last week that I've been playing constantly is Malajube's "Labyrinthes". Although I've only had it a week - so maybe too soon to judge - I'm not sure it's quite as good as the previous album ("Trompe L’Oeil"), but it's still one of the best things I've heard this year. Disappointed they've scratched the UK date off of their upcoming tour :(

Album of the year so far for me is Bob Dylan's Together Through Life.
Really? I love Dylan, I even named my son Dylan... and I think it's utterly uninspired and purely going through the motions.

Really? I love Dylan, I even named my son Dylan... and I think it's utterly uninspired and purely going through the motions.
For me, the sheer joie de vivre of most of the songs and Bob's performances, plus the instrumental revitalisation provided by Mike Campbell and David Hidalgo, lifts this record above Modern Times. I now feel that despite some very inspired moments there may have been some motions being gone through on that one.
The only track I'm having difficulties with is 'Life Is Hard', which while the catalyst for this whole project, just doesn't seem to sit well with the rest of Together Through Life. Still, Bob must be doing something right, as I see that the album is straight in at No. 1 with a bullet.
This weeks Word podcast gives Dylans live performances a bit of a panning (and one of the guys is a diehard fan). Worth a listen

Another vote for "Together Through Life" some fantastic material on the album, Dylan has obviously taken a different approach to producing this latest work. Been listening to it non stop since Friday and still can't put it down.
Standout tracks for me "I Feel A Change Coming On" "Life Is Hard" "Forgetful Heart" and "This Dream Of You" the latter being one of the best Dylan songs I have heard in recent years, truly stunning. Fine album, my best of the year and it will take something special to replace it.

No, well reminded though, read a few decent reviews for it now. Totally different direction by all accounts.

Just listened to it about three times in a row. The final song 'Sea Within A Sea' really is something quite different and (as many reviews point out) gets you pressing play again.

It's brilliant, I listened to it end to end on a long car journey the day it arrived and it blew me away..
It's the pinnacle of their work so far I think, it draws on everything they have done well and expands upon that almost flawlessly, I love the use of the choir, it just left me floored.

The new album from Manchester Orchestra is a fine effort, and my fave of the year so far.

I read a live review once, that said they created a sound that made your bowels want to collapse - or something like that, I'm paraphrasing. I can imagine they do, hearing them at that volume. I find if you play them loud on your headphones, you can feel a heavy pressure on the back of your head; it's quite intense.
They certainly have something though, and are quite compelling as you say.

Coming from a relative newcomer to TA, I thought it was a very good album and my favourite album of the year so far. I've gotten all her albums since and have learned to gain appreciation for each of them, even The Beekeeper which is not a fan favourite. I like the fact that each album has different characteristics and it was a trip going through them chronogically.
As with her last few albums, there are 3 or so songs that could've been cut to make the album flow better, but overall I would say it's on par with Little Earthquakes as a good introduction to her work, but fans of earlier TA probably won't like it.

I'm just listening to 'Crash Kings' by Crash Kings and it's absolutely fantastic. Well worth a listen.
London Elektricity - Syncopated City (Amazon (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001DCKXMY/thedvdforums-21)) would be one of my albums of the year so far; All Hell Is Breaking Loose is an awesome track.
Quite enjoying The Rumble Strips new effort, it's got legs
The Gathering - The West Pole is the one I've been enjoying the most so far. They got a new singer but her voice really suits the music.
Honorable mentions go to Delain - April Rain and Amorphis - Skyforger.

I've just realised I haven't mentioned Patrick Watson's new album, Wooden Arms. It's a real grower.
