I posted a message here a few weeks ago, asking about a problem I was experiencing with my region 2 copy of Labyrinth.

The problem was that both the trailer and "making of doco" wont play. When I selected them they pixelated wildly then froze a few seconds later. This was not a player related issue as the same problem occurred on several different multi region players.

A couple of people at these forums said that they had not experienced this problem with their copies, so I assumed I must have a faulty disc. I therefore contacted Bensonsworld UK, and they sent me out a replacement DVD.

But here's the annoying part! The replacement disc has exactly the same problem!! Now if 2 discs have the same problem then surely all of them do, which leads me to believe its a mastering problem of some kind. However if people here aren't experiencing the same problem with their copies, then what is going on?

The only thing I can think of is that perhaps there are a couple of different versions floating around (maybe it was remastered)? but if this was the case I doubt Bensonsworld would be selling an older faulty version.

Can anyone please shed some light on this problem? as its really annoying me. :(

It could be faulty batch of discs.
It could be that the disc isn't 100% compatible with your player.

My copy, that I traded, worked absolutely fine on my Toshiba SD2109e.

I'd say it could be a compatibility problem.

Although it also sounds similar to a problem I had with my old PC drive. Basically it wouldn't play the second layer on a few of my discs. In the case of Betty Blue, where presumably the trailer is on the second layer, it fizzled out in much the same way. Having said that, it also meant that it would only play half the film.

Have you tried the disc on a friend's player? What sort of player do you have?

i remember replying in your last post saying i would check my copy out. well i finally did today and both the documentary and the trailer worked fine.

definitely sounds like a bad batch but thats bad luck that you would get a faulty copy twice. i got mine from hmv just prior to christmas.

I have the exact same problem!

The doco and trailer won't play on my PC DVD-ROM or my Bush 2000.

What do you sugest I do? Keep sending it back? To the suplier? Distributor?

I'd say it has to be a faulty batch of discs. Its definitely not my player as I've tried the disc on 3 different players, and the problem is there on all of them.

Yes. I've tried it on 3 different players, including a DVD-ROM.

I own a Toshiba SD2109.

Well that confirms it then. It must be a faulty batch of discs. As for what to do about it, thats what I'd like to know!

Sonicmint: Where di you buy your copy?

Can all of you that own this disc do me a favour please? Please check the back of your DVD case and write down the bar code here.

Mine is: 5 035822 720930

And also check the number printed on the disc label itself, under the Columbia Tri-star Logo.

Mine number on the disc label is: E-17209-ST

And one more number, wrtite down the one printed on the inner part of the disc. This number is readable from the underneath. (printed around the inner circle)

Mine is: A0100297923-A911 46

If the numbers differ on our discs, it might be psosible to determine how to identify the faulty batch.

Thanks a lot for your help people. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

All numbers are the same on mine, apart from on the disc, which has two

outside: A0100297923-A911 36
inside: A0100297923-B911 16

Also, don't know if it's any use, but on the back cover in the bottom left hand corner, there's the number EL-17209-UK-S.

Mine plays fine in my Creative Encore PC thingy.

Barcode: 5 035822 720930

Disc label: E-17209-ST

Disc number: A0100297923-A911 46

Same numbers I'm afraid.

I bought my disc from play.com and it came through the other day. What I'm gonna do is take it to my local Woolies and get it replaced, then see if the problem goes away. If it is a batch problem then I hope their stock is from a different batch. Any reputable High Street retailer will exchange faulty discs even without a receipt (just say someone bought it for you as a present and they got it from there) cus all they do is send it back to the supplier, so no-one loses out.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like it definitely a faulty batch.

Neverland: Whats the barcode on the back cover of your copy? If the barcodes differ, then I can let Bensonsworld know and get them to send me the version that works ok.

Otherwise I think I'm stuffed, as they sure as hell arent going to open up all their Labyrinth copies looking for the right number on the disc :(

Yikes! I was going to order this from Play in the next few days, but I'm having second thoughts now. I've got a Pioneer 515 and it seems to handle most 'problem' discs quite well, so
I may still take a chance.

On a side note, to anyone who has seen the doc on this disc, did you recognise the choreographer? A certain Starfleet Medical officer from Next Gen!

I remembered this from the VHS copy I still have from the telly!

Yep, I still have the documentary off tv on VHS too. And yes, I did notice the choreographer in it a few years ago, although I thought it was her twin or something until I checked it up on IMDB. She is credited as Cheryl MacFadden on Labryrinth which threw me. She did only choreograph the bubble dream sequence though.

Same as yours I'm afraid, 5 035822 720930

Have you tried CTHV's website? I think it's www.cthv.co.uk, but I could be wrong. They may have a contact address where you can ask for help.

Thanks again for the all the info people. I have contacted Columbia Tri-star and Bensonsworld advising them of the different versions of this disc, and asking how to proceed, so I will post here again once I know more.
