I've gone for twice a week too. If I can stick at having this for lunch then it will work out cheaper and healthier overall.
Some of the stuff looks quite yummy and it's the sort of thing where everything looks like it is worth a try.
basegreen
15-04-2009, 20:42
yes you could probably get the stuff a bit cheaper at the shop, BUT............. the important point here is it being zero effort, and the variety is great as you could find something you didnt know you liked.

I'm tempted but could someone put up a review of what they think of it when they a receive their box please. What does it taste like & could it be considered value for money compared to, say, getting fresh fruit, trail mix etc yourself from Tesco during the weekly shop? Thanks!
splobber
15-04-2009, 20:56
It's going to taste like fruit and stuff I reckon. I've little doubt that you can go tappity tap on a calculator and realise you can save 3p or what not, but the key ingredient here is convenience.
It also removes the temptation to get your bag of fruit from Tesco and then picking up a pack of jam doughnuts to go with it. :D
Just go for the trial. At £1.50 for 2 boxes with the ability to cancel at anytime, it's not really worth the deliberation and reliance on reviews really.
Gone for it - thanks. Took some time to rate a few things and get rid of what i don't like too so hopefully come saturday i'll get a nice selection!

I don't like the idea of sending ready prepared oranges etc. through the post - will it stay fresh?
splobber

They probably take the best part of a week to get to the supermarket shelves from where ever, so they are probably fresher then what you buy from there.

I ordered before the affiliate link was launched and my first box turned up yesterday. It comprises a large portion of fruit (my box yesterday has 7-8 slices of pineapple), a smaller portion of dried fruit and nuts and a small portion of nuts - it's about on the money size wise, haven't eaten it yet, it's in my bag this morning, but the pinapple "looks" fresh, and the nuts and stuff aren't likely to suffer from perishing in the short term.
For those struggling to get their 5 a day, it's a great idea because as Splobber says, it's zero effort, order it the day before you want to eat it and it's on your door mat when you get home.
EDIT: Couldn't resist opening the pineapple - and when they say it's "perfectly ripe", they are bob on! Much better than the stuff Tesco/Asda put out (i.e. chunks of pineapple tree trunk).
Gone for it. Cheers guys.
Looks like you're a bit stuffed if you don't like nuts or dried fruit? Fresh fruit is ace, and if they did a box that just contained that I'd be doing it, undoubtedly.
Oh no, you can choose to get rid of nuts from the "snack pack". What about the "graze mix" Can that be guaranteed not to contain nuts..? Dried fruit I can manage if I need to !!
I guess if you state you have a nut allergy when signing up (there is an option for it) you won't get any nuts :)
Cheers i've given it a go, might stop the occasional bacon rolls....
Mentioned this to some colleagues and a couple of them are keen. I'll wait and see what they get - and how good the non-nut options are! The "nut allergy" tick box, simply says "we can't cater for you at the moment as all our products are packed in the same place". Not ideal as I'm not actually allergic, I just don't like them.
MR.COATES
16-04-2009, 09:37
Then just choose a custom box and say what you do and don't like on their list of products.
That's what I'm looking at now, but a huge amount of their stuff has got nuts in.
Also, unfortunately, fruit wise, the apples and grapes don't appeal as they're so easy to "get right" yourself. I'm going to give it a go on the trial I think and see if I feel it's offering value at £3. Hopefully, as it's a great idea. Like the Vegetable boxes, except something I'll actually eat!

You control what they send you... it may take some time to go through what you like/dislike though!
Got mine today, had them about 3-4 weeks now... fresh crunchy apple, ancient forest nut mix and the very scrummy naturally infused orange raisins!
Shame this healthy eating can't sort a bad back out though!
Ok, it seems once again we have a link that's not correctly tracking for reasons unknown.
Can anyone who has ordered please email me their order reference number so I can get it looked into?

So it is 6 quid if you go for twice a week?
Hmm... 24 quid a month. For 8 apples and a bag of nuts?
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea (a lot) but I'm just trying to justify it to myself. You could buy a load of nuts etc. from Julian Graves for 12 quid and have 12 quid left to spend on fruit at your local market...
Thanks OP, I've gone for the trial, although I do agree with Ste7en...

Last time I went to the local market, half the fruit was mouldy and the other half went off within a couple of days :D
I think it's more of the convenience thing and is more suited to office workers who can have a selection of nice fruit delivered daily without the need to potter off the local supermarket.

How do you think supermarkets get hold of stuff? Star Trek transporter technology or the carbon friendly method of planes, trains and automobiles?
Admittedly, they are probably doing all that and shipping it out again, but I don't have to jump in my car along with 50 other people when the postman will do all that in one van.
Further to my earlier post - there are no reference numbers. However if you could all email me the email address you used to sign up to graze.com I'd be very appreciative as there is definitely an issue.

Granted, but surely it is better to avoid the situation of having to get in your car at lunchtime and drive to get your lunch by either getting it on the way to work or making it at home and taking it with you or walking to get it if possible?

It's all about convenience. Yes it's more expensive than going out and buying your own, but now you don't have to go out (and saves you wasting fuel trekking to shops too).
Might give it a go in a couple of weeks when I come back from holiday, I could see it being popular in the workplace.

Buy a big bag of nuts and put 'em in an airtight container in a drawer of your desk, then, before setting out to work, put an apple and a banana in your bag (...you'll have to buy all these items when you do the rest of your shopping making the comments about wasting fuel total nonsense). There you go, healthy eating at a fraction of the price... ...maybe I should market this idea??!

I dont want to eat the same nuts every day! If I buy big bags of each for the bulk saving, I'll never finish them and waste money. I don't want a huge punnet of grapes, just a handful etc etc. The idea of getting olives delivered is also a big bonus.
(and you know what, the fact the first two boxes = £1.50 total means i could just eat those and cancel and be well up on the deal) :D

I wouldn't be surprised... I do worry about our post as it's recently taken up to a month for some first class urgent mail to turn up.
So, what happens if it doesn't turn up on the day? Do you get a refund? My colleague's got it scheduled for Friday, so if it misses that then she won't get it til Monday!

Because the 5-a-day thing is not mean to be a once a week thing?
Because that's the day she wants it  The only option in the canteen on Friday's is fish and chips so I think that's got something to do with it!
Why wouldn't she order it for that day, given they claim to be able to deliver it on Fridays? It's Colin's post that they've failed at the first attempt that has got me thinking about it
That's RM's fault though surely?
Well sure, but it's not the customer who should have to be inconvenienced or charged if it happens. Graze.com should choose a suitable courier or have adequate procedure in place to sort it out satisfactily, eg, the next box is free or something like that.

I received mine today. The grapes were very tasty (although I had no wench to peel them for me), the bakewell tart mix of dried fruit and nuts was lush and the non dairy chocolate beans were just like Smarties.
Not sure if it is worth £2.99 for what you get but I'll stick it out for now as it gives me a lot of variety and will prolly save me money in the long run. I went in Tescos to get a sandwich yesterday and came out £30 lighter...

Thanks Colin anyway, probably give this a try, but am dissappointed there is not actually that much fresh fruit there, after first reading their boast about hard to get hold of items was hopnig to see loads of choice of exotic fresh fruit like green bananas and stuff you didn't even know existed whereas in reality there's only about 4 different type of fresh fruit available (surely fresh is the best healthiest way to get your 5 a day?). No Apricots, bananas, strawberries, peaches, all sorts of everyday fresh fruit, yet grapefruit which I don't like is offered twice, with or without orange. Whats the recommended use by date on these deliveries?

Grapes weren't fresh enough for my liking but the walnuts and yoghurt coated peach bits were great.

the interest in this offer shows that the idea of a convienent food delievry is one that appeals to us all. Why don't some local greengrocers don't arrange it with local business, much reduced transport costs, so cheaper price all round and an idea that appeals as both sides KNOW that it will arrive (by van etc) on the promised day.

Possibly, but in the current eco-friendly environment, it would have to be a 'green' service. It could be a goer if they could drive electric cars for delivery and use recyclable glass bottles rather than plastic.
Sounds too far-fetched to me.

Im all for any business to be a success, esp in this day and age, but isnt this just relying on peoples 'too laziness to take some fruit to work', I mean how hard can it be?
And is that little box really worth 3 quid?
I'd agree that any business that is using delivery and convenience as it's main selling point (it can't be price! ) is doomed to failure if it's using Royal Mail to deliver on it's promises.
What happens at xmas? They still going to use just first class mail? Boxes could be arriving all over the place.
Using special delivery is surely the only way to guarantee any sort of reliability when to comes to delivery, and I can't see that happening for the price.

I find the difference between a sandwich made at home and one you buy out are streets apart. Not sure why, crack probably plays a large part.
I'm not sure whether I will carry on after the trial, but I like the variety (I wouldn't buy all this from Julian Graves) and the fact it gets delivered to me rather then me going out to get it.
As has been said a billion times, it's the convenience aspect that is the key ingredient and not price. If price was a factor then you would do away with your car and get the bus everywhere, but the convenience factor is what keeps you paying out for petrol, insurance and loans every year.
It is s lovely idea, but I was under the impression someone would actually bring it round, like the little man on the Pret bikes you see. Relying on Royal Mail to deliver fresh fruit is

Yes. Most sandwich shops, especially subway are just the biggest rip off ever.

Subway is OK if you get the vouchers. Actually they had (and still have?) a deal on atm where you buy one six inch + a drink and get another free...which is pretty good.
As for this, it seems a lot of people got grapes with theirs (I did also), I'll get the next one for half price and see what I get...probably won't go further than that, though.
Yes. Most sandwich shops, especially subway are just the biggest rip off ever.I disagree - to buy all the stuff from Asda that you'd need to make a different butty for each day of the week would cost plenty (albeit less than Subway) and mean you'd end up with a fridge full of half-used packs. Most people can't be arsed being so organised, and would end up with loads of waste.... As for this, it seems a lot of people got grapes with theirs (I did also)what's the deal with the grapes ?

They were fantastic grapes (red ones I got)..
the idea of a little man on a bike delivering to where I live is just as
If you read about their processes, they take into account the day's postage.
Where i live, a 'days' postage could be anything between 1-7 days. I do realise the little man (or woman) on a bike is  which is why I didnt understand this service and how it was going to work.

Got my 2nd (£1.49) box today. Eliminated Green Grapes after the poor quality in the first box.
So I got Apple, Korean Chilli Rice Crackers and Dried Raspberries.
ALL three were actually fantastically good!
I'd seriously consider paying £1.49 per box for what I received today, maybe even £1.99 and just get it once a week but it seems most people agree that £2.99 is just too much.
But I'm really glad I tried it, faultless service in my particular case just dodgy green grapes in my first box.

I'm not convinced it is much cheaper to buy the stuff in a supermarket.
You pay about £2.99 in M&S for a ready prepared fruit salad.
After trying the free box I have tried doing the same sort of think myself and spent £20 on fruit, dried fruit and nuts from Tesco. The fruit has only last me for 4 lunches and I don't think the dried fruit and nuts will last any more than 8 days.
cliff homewood

I would have thought its cheaper but the problem is how much is 1 ptn of fruit? IF its available im bound to munch through a lot more, whereas this system gives you the constraint of just what is needed.
Was going to pop into a health food shop and see how much a bag of dried fruit would be. Still not convinced thats the best way to get your fruit nitake though, surely fresh is healthier? I believe dried is quite fattening (they at least taste very sweet).
I think too many nuts will make you fat too.
I think most of it will put the weight on, smarties? Bakewell tart?
Are the only things you get that is fresh, and not dried, pineapple and grapes?
How do they fit a granny smith thru the letterbox?

I went and bought £8 worth of crap from Holland & Barrett. It all gets very samey, doesn't taste as nice and you just end up eating **** loads of it because it comes in a **** off packet, which defeats the object. the other alternative, if its near would be Boots.
for the same £2.99 in a meal deal you could get a smoothie, a bag of nuts and a fruit bowl (rather than a sarnie).
however that would be a pretty calorific meal if you ate it all, 150 cals for the smoothie, 100 for the fruit and then 600 for the nuts (they say 300 cals on the front of the bag but thats for only half the bag). they also do dried apricots instead of the nuts.
So swapping to the store equivalent isn't any cheaper, and is perhaps worse value as your not getting it delivered to your door (i'd have to have it delivered to work else you'd get another days delay into the mix as post always arrive sometimes after i have left for work)

The only thing is its meant to be not a meal replacement but for grazing, snacking on between meals, but having ate my box today I then added up the calories 400 calories! That's a meal in my book. Trying to eat halthier and lose weight, but if the snacking is gonig to regularly add up to this it ain't going to help.

I've decided to go for 3 boxes a week for now (where I generally am out the house for lunch) as I went down the 'buy your own bags' route and they all got really boring having the same old thing every day. I get a fiver a day lunch allowance anyway so I may as well use it. The freshness, variety and convenience is what appeals to me most as opposed to cost.
I went into Tesco earlier to buy a £1.80 sandwich and came out £17 lighter so this is probably a more cost effective option for me really.

While 400 calories is not a lot for lunch, you can get a sandwich or other alternatives containing similar calories, so I wouldn't go into it expecting it to be necessarily a healthy option.
there's a lot more to a "healthy option" than calories though, Lou ;)

I don't think the M & S salad is an apt comparison being such an expensive company, I woudl suggest comparing it to the value of the waitrose salad bar instead for instance. Yopu can get a lot into those tubs (sainsburys do one as well).

I've had two of these now and I have been impressed enough. At £2.99 a box it isn't cheap, but at the same time it isn't ridiculously expensive and does give you a chance to try things might not otherwise have so worth it if anything from that perspective.
24 quid a month on nuts and a bit of fruit is ridiculously expensive IMO.

The box was a lot bigger than it need to be, its quite deceptive on how much food you are getting in it compare to the empty space in the box (if you take out the individual sections). I am sure it is value for money but i am struggling to see through it....for £3 you can get a potatoes salad from M&S with Pepper Salmon with cucumber....I think i'll give it one more week and cancel.
£3 for some nuts and and a bit of fruit.
The packaging looks well over the top, same with the personalised notes.

As said previously, at the moment it's overpriced if they want to have frequent customers. £1.50 a box is more than enough IMO...and still then I'd only be willing on having two a week.
You can buy huge bags of cashews, almonds, pistachio nuts in supermarkets for a few quid that will last you quite a while - although the mexican cashews, salted lemon pistachio's are verrrrry nice.
The fruit seemed impressive, but they seem to only variate between grapes and pineapple...maybe things will change when it gets sunnier so they could have more stock. But at the moment, you get what? 10 graps? I can buy a bunch of them for £1 that will last me a few days. Same goes for pineapple...
By the way, I deleted my credit card last week, but still left one order in the list which they still sent out and charged me for...so be careful about doing the same as me :)

Fruit is fruit, but the other stuff is nice and different to the usual fayre from a lot of retail gaffs. I've said that a large bag of whatever from the local health food shop gets boring and you eat too much of it, whereas the Graze box is perfectly adequate for me. It keeps me eating the right amount (I can pig out if I am in the right shop), gives me variety without having to buy scores of massive bags on the high street and actually saves me money by not going into a shop and spending at least twice that amount.
Not sure how they can do it for £1.50 though seeing as it probably costs that to post it...
Also, it doesn't just boil down to tapping numbers in a calculator and saying that you can get a bunch of grapes for 0.031p each - the key message is convenience and for that you generally pay more. £3 for me is nothing for lunch, and is actually saving me money and keeping me healthier to boot, so I'm happy. I don't do it 5 days a week at the moment, as 2 days is more then adequate for now as I don't always eat lunch if I want to finish earlier.
The convenience factor 'can' be ruled out by Royal Mail IMO.
I never got mine delivered to work because people are so feckless here, it would sit on someone's desk for a week before they decided to drop it off with me.
I've had mine delivered at home and had it at work the next day... or that night :)
Novel idea, I like it. But I'm just going to whore their recipe ideas and make batches of my own up. You don't have to buy big bags of stuff as an alternative, you can buy several smaller bags and mix a few different recipes up
MetalGearAl
07-05-2009, 10:07
I imagine £3 for lunch is probably saving money for some people, for me it's quite a bit more. At the moment I make my own salads (avacado salad, potato salad and cous-cous typically) so that costs fractions of the amount and it's all fresh. Before that and generally when it's colder I often had a Covent Garden or Supermarket soup and they're about £1.50 a go.
But it's not lunch really, it's more like some fruit and nuts to go with lunch.
That wouldn't fill most people up for lunch.
It is supposed to be instead of, you are supposed to nibble during the day. Hence, Graze.
