View Full Version : Kevin Smith Movies - what order?
Watched "Clerks" the other night, and in the credits it said "Jay and Silent Bob will return in Dogma"
Now the IMDB lists Mallrats as the next film made, then
Drawing Flies, Chasing Amy, THEN Dogma, followed by Scream 3 (really!) with Silent Bob "featuring" (have to watch that again now and see where!), and finally Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
I'm guessing that there is a "prefered viewing order" for the films?
Any ideas?
IMDB has it right, that's the best order IMHO :D

At the time of finishing Clerks, Mr Smith had probably hoped that Dogma was to be his next film made and not Mallrats but it wasnt meant to be, thats the way the cookie crumbles, dont put all you're eggs on one basket an such.
when did the clerks dvd come out in relation to Dogma being produced? ,aybe that had something to do with it .... oh wait i'm not sure that makes sense. never mind

Clerks
Mallrats
Chasing Amy
Dogma (got the be the special Edit)
Clerks Animated
Jay and silent bob
The scream 3 thing is just a 20 second walk on apperance.
Thats the best order to watch them, and you will get all the "in jokes" in Jay and Silent bob.
I think Clerks was mastered from the laser disc, as Im sure he slated DVDs at the start of the comenty.
Dogma was due to be the 2nd of the new jersey trilogy, but funding went and he made mallrats next

You're thinking of Chasing Amy Criterion, where he makes the introduction at the start of the DVD apoligising for the phrase 'funk DVD' at the start of the commentary.

Preferred order of viewing......
Clerks
Mallrats
Chasing Amy
Dogma
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Clerks: Animated (whenever)
BUT.....
If you want to be picky, evidence suggests that 'Mallrats' is set 1 day before 'Clerks', check out 'Chapter 2' on 'Mallrats' where TS & Brandi talk about Julie Dwyer dying in the swimming pool that morning, then go to 'chapter 10' on 'Clerks' where Randall informs Dante that Julie Dwyer died "yesterday" in the swimming pool. Make of it what you will. ;)

well i just got my copy of Chasing Amy Criterion yesterday and in the guide to the View Askewniverse characters in the booklet that comes with it, it says Julie Dwyer dies in the YMCA pool sometime around midnight on Thursday, Mallrats takes place on Friday and Clerks is on Saturday (plus Chasing Amy is 2 years after the events in Clerks)
Wow
I did not realise they were THAT closely related!
Thanks everyone :)
Just a quick heads-up:
Drawing Flies is released next week.
OK guys,
Why all the excitement about Drawing Flies ? Its not directed by Kevin Smith, although he does seem to share a producing credit (presumably because View Askew produced it). Has anybody seen it ? Does it fit into the View Askew Universe ? How is it related to the other (Smith directed) films?
Scott
Excitement?
It has been mentioned twice in this thread (by myself both times), and I have surely proved I don't know a great deal about these films! :D
Anyway, IMDB credits Kevin Smith as playing Silent Bob in Drawing Flies. So I guess it fits in?
Here is what DV-Depot say on thier site about it:
"In 1996 five celebrities wandered into the wilderness… in 2002 their film was released. Five Canadian slackers' lives are turned upside down when they are cut off of the Canadian welfare system leaving them penniless. To lay low and avoid the landlord, they embark on a weeklong camping trip into the woods. What the friends don't know is that their guide, Donner (Jason Lee), has gone crazy and has been leading them on a perilous hunt for a fabled "Bigfoot." They soon realize that if the woods don't kill them, they'll do it themselves. "
Anyone know more?
Drawing Flies seems not to be related to the Askewniverse.
Check this out:

But it stars Jason Lee and that is enough for me.
So where to get it, to date I've only seen it on Amazon ($14.98 + $5.98 shipping)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005Y71C/qid=1014054630/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_71_1/104-6029383-4029559
and at viewaskew itself (see link above). Here its $19.95 + $11.50 shipping.
There is also "A Better Place" being touted as a View Askew production. Don't know much about it, but I remember folks on their forums getting excited about this so it may be worth checking out.
Me I'm off to see if I can knock that price down any further elsewhere.
Search on www.********************* - it will give about 5 stores that list it.
the soundtrack to 'A Better Place' is available on the Gig Records website
www.gigrecords.com
top site!
