Right well i was going to watch Die Hard 2 R1, which i borrowed off of a mate, i stuck it into my recently purchased Pioneer DV444, which i may add i got from Justin from here. Right my player has been fine to play all R1's except for ones by 20 century fox. I found this weird, seeing as i can play all other R1's.
Please cansomeone help me!!!1

You need to change region to R1, going to setup then display will show its currently R2 default (auto region will still work once you`ve changed region, as per supplied info:) ).

How come you need to change to region 2 when you want to play an r1 disc
- turn the player on with no disc so No Disc is displayed
- press setup
- select general and press enter
- select SETUP MENU MODE
select BASIC
- press DISPLAY
- press CONDITION MEMORY
- press 1-6 according to region (2 in this case)

it a copy of both True Lies and Die Hard 2 R1
omigod - the 444 I have lying around (haven't passed it on to my mate yet) is the same. I manually changed it to r1 and it wouldn't remember the display settings! it played an r2 disk but in the wrong ratio. Set it to R2, put fight club in (20th CF) and it said the disc is formatted in the wrong region. It plays other r1's though in the right A/R. It plays FC when you manually select R1 in the the right A/R. OK, put an r2 back in (godfather after manually setting to R1 and the A/R is fine). Sorry if this is confusing but I'm writing up as I'm doing it.
Even my 2.5 year old pioneer 525 doesn't have this "problem/feature". Whats up Justin?

Was looking to buy this from Justin so very interested to see how this pans out. Didn't Bapapaa have problems with this also in the supplier forum? Hope you sort it out as it looks like a good player.

shouldn't put you off buying it, it is a very good machine. I have now sorted the problem and everythings working fine again.

Even my 2.5 year old pioneer 525 doesn't have this "problem/feature". Whats up Justin? The 444 I had wouldn't save the 4:3 letterbox setting and kept reverting to 16x9 in the setup menus after being in standby. Fine if you have a WSTV, but not very handy if you have a 4:3tv. Unless of course you like everything tall and skinny!!
I'm surprised no-one before me has mentioned it because Justin tested a few and they all displayed the same "feature". I think you can get it to stick if you play around in the menus a special way, but even then it will still forget the setting randomly..
Swapped it for a Tosh 210e though and everything's groovy.. (fingers crossed the PSU & transport hold out.. :p)
It only happened after I manually changed it to r1 (to test the 20th CF dvd). After I changed it back to R2, it saved the 4:3 setting and played other r1 titles fine. Weird.

Definately weird, did my frigging head in...
my mate won't be playing any r1 dvds anyway so its not really a problem here :D

Had a 444 for about a month now and it doesn't revert the settings to 16x9. I have mine set at 4:3 widescreen. All in all, I've not had any problems at all, inc playing R1,R2 and R4 discs. I guess I'm lucky?
:)

have you tried to play a r1 20th century fox title when the 444 is set to r2?

You *don`t* have to manually change regions, you can fool the pioneers once modded by popping in a none RCE region 1, let it come up with play, then eject and insert the RCE or other disc, and it should be fine.... Unless you go into the expert nav levels of the setup menu whilst set to R1, the settings should remain the same.

Thats exactly when it happed (forgot the display settings).
I don't think Fight Club (which caused the problem) is RCE, or is it??

I have had my 444 for 2 months, have a 4:3 tv and it has never forgotten the settings.

Bringing this threa back from the dead!
My mate has just bought the Pioneer dv-444-s,and the hack mentioned above doesnt seem to work.
We get as far as the menu displaying that its region2,but pressing condition memory and a number has no effect.
Any ideas anyone?
iirc it doesn't actually display the *new* region on the menu, it just changes, I might be wrong though, its been a while. Press the cond button then 1 (or whatever region required), get out of the menu and try to get back to where it does display the region and it should have changed (assuming your mate bought it from HCH).

The above "commands" (not a hack!) won`t work, unless the player has been bought, or moddified from an actual multiregion dealer such as ourselves, Upgrade Heaven, Steve @ DVD Chips, Techtronics, DVD Magic, Link or Paul Taylor.
Dealers offering "multiregion" players like Richer sounds, Superfi, Hi-Fi bitz, etc, have no multiregion experiance or development abilities, and as such buy in cheap unknown solutions, or subcontract the work to dealers such as ourselves.
If a product says "multiregion" and nothing else about its abilities, then buy with caution, or avoid! Basically if you don`t buy it from a dealer that is known to support and develop their own modifications, you cannot expect to have the commands work on your machine when you have not paid for the appropiate "full" multiregion mod. :)
My advice - you get what you pay for! Always check what mod is provided, its abilities, and supplied by whom, before purchase. Otherwise, you`ll end up most likely re-modding at a later date at additional cost.
Cheers
