View Full Version : Anyone else almost never buy new films?

I notice tons of people in the Classifieds section selling off releases of new films (which begs the question why would they buy them), but also made me stop and think how rare it is I'll buy a film made in the last year or two.

This year must be some sort of personal record, because I've already purchased or pre-ordered Almost Famous: Bootleg, In The Mood for Love, George Washington and Mulholland Drive.

However, mixed up with those in the same span are Salo, Assault on Precinct 13, Children of Paradise, Harold and Maude, Seconds, Nosferatu (Murnau), Badlands, Say Anything...well, you get the idea. My DVD collection (http://www.dvdprofiler.com/mc.asp?alias=Narshty) is much the same.

Maybe it's because new films don't have the years of critical reflection that older films do, but I'm often so reluctant to buy any new films, despite the fact I'm a regular cinema-goer and enjoy a decent chunk of what I see.

Anyone else like this?

I find it hard to buy a DVD that I ain't seen. Especially if it's a new film!

I don't buy many new films at all. I mainly buy the older stuff - and I never buy new releases either. I think I've only bought one or two "new" DVDs.

I don't mind buying new films that I haven't seen because it's pretty easy to get rid of them on the classifieds if it's not to your taste.

I'm not sure that years of critical reflection have anything to do with it in my case - the 'keepers' that I own all mean something to me in their own special way, regardless of when they were made - so it's more of a personal reflection thing.

Besides, I've bought loads of stuff new & old that I might not have usually, on recommendation from peeps on the forums.

This place is a mine of knowledge...

I don't exactly have the most modern collection of films,(11 R2's are missing but they are Blackadders,Genevieve, etc).I have bought the films i saw when i was younger, and rarely bother with the latest bolckbusters. Narshty,i was noseying through your collection and you don't have many war films, classics a la Kelly's Heroes, etc. Each to their own,of course :)

I've only got Oceans'11 & Jay And Silent Bob on order. All my other orders are old films. I bought Scary Movie 2, The Score and various other "new" films and they were a waste of money. Have sold over 100 DVD's at work this week and cleared out loads of new titles.

Sticking with old films now, and will borrow new films off my mates.

I think my newest film is probably Any given sunday, most of mine are 80`s - early nineties. besides Tv shows etc. I rarely buy new films. Maybe this says something on the state of cinema? Or maybe im just biased.

Trust me, mate, I'm working on it - I'm planning on Kelly's Heroes, The Bridge Over The River Kwai, Cross of Iron and The Great Escape Special Edition (in May) as soon as I can scrape the cash together. :)

That's what I'm finding. I'm actually selling off a great deal of my modern rubbish and replacing it with more classics. I've bought only one new film this year and that was Ghost World. Having said that, I do plan on buying A.I. ; Mulholland Drive ; Vanilla Sky ; Ocean's Eleven ; Amelie ; The Man Who Wasn't There ; Gosford Park and a few others come April/May. So, there is still hope for the newer films!!

I tend to get the new films, but sell or trade them once Ive seen them as very few have much re watch value. Only new film that I have pre ordered is Jay and Silent bob, and Ive already seen that, but I class it as a keeper.

Plus if I have missed them at the cinema its the best way to see them on the cheap. i.e. Mummy, Mummy Returns, Tomb Raider, Swordfish etc. But none of them are keepable, although Im tempted to get Swordfish again, and the Mummy.

ie, buy 2nd had for £12, watch it, and put it back on the next week for £12, free watch of a film, and your money back :D or another title you want to watch.

If I do buy it new, normally cheap or pre order (or if its a big title that I doubt I will be able to get cheap, ie Fast and furious (r4 pre order)), and do not like it, its easier to get rid of if you do it while its a new release.

I get and keep a lot of older films, for old time sake, ie Robocop, Terminator, die hards etc. Loved them when I was young. And want to be able to watch them when I want, uncut etc in the best possible form.

I tend to buy films I know and have watched. I go to the cinema about once a month so potentially I could buy about 12 films on dvd a year. However a lot of them I wouldn't watch again so I tend to buy dvd's of older films.

I'd say about 90% of my collection consists of films made before the mid 1980's.

I buy some DVDs new and some second hand. As long as they are in good condition I don't really care.

Last two 'new' films I've bought on DVD were 'Almost Famous', and 'Go', both around summertime last year. Got 'J&SBSB' on order now (grrr. hoping to have it today from Ringos ;) )... and 'A.I.'.

The bulk of my collection are films from around 1980-1994.
