Will this be all regions, or just those released here?

It does NOT apply to R1. Source - DVD File:Remember those three Fox titles announced a week or so ago - Cast Away, Independence Day and The Abyss - that were to be repriced single-disc versions of the previous feature-loaded, two-disc special editions? Well, there's now a new little wrinkle to the story. Arriving on 5/7, these reprices will now be joined by seven additional titles - Men of Honor, Anna and the King, Big Momma’s House, Edward Scissorhands, Entrapment, Lake Placid and Predator. The catch? These are actually new pan & scan versions, and a nod to the growing demand by many consumers who "don't like those black bars." According to a recent Video Store article, according to Fox senior VP of marketing Peter Staddon, these releases are "a reflection that the mass market demographic doesn't want those black bars." The titles are all priced at $19.95, and the small thanks and praise department, the widescreen releases with all the features are staying at the market (at the higher list price, however) and Fox is not abandoning widescreen.
Joe91 - that info is now out of date. Here is that exact info from DVD Reviewer R1 news:
Further to our recent story about Fox Home Entertainment reissuing several key titles as single-disc movie-only editions, we can now confirm that the existing two-disc special editions of The Abyss, Cast Away and Independence Day will be withdrawn on 1st June 2002.
Also due for the chop on the same day are Alien (Special Edition), Aliens (Special Edition), Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, Planet Of The Apes (Special Edition), Speed, Speed 2: Cruise Control and X-Men (Special Edition)
This is being discussed in the P&S Strikes again thread also

Doom mongering for no reason. Speed is out this year as a 5 star collection edition, and at least ALien if not the rest will be added to that line as well. Planet of the Apes get the 5 star treatment next year I believe too.
I dont think Speed 2 is a 2 disc set in R1 anyway so the information is falwed for starters..

As already mentioned Speed is due a 5-Star release, I believe Alien and Planet Of The Apes are also in the pipeline for 5-Star releases as well.
And it would not suprise me if this does not happen with some more of the W/S version that have been withdrawn.

As long as it is ONLY Alien... I didn't fork out £70 for a boxset to have it replaced by better discs within 6 months :( Although I thought the Alien disc was pretty good as it was
