View Full Version : Upgrading DVD player
I thinking about upgrading my LG 3350 DVD player.
Any suggestions? nice and vague I know! details later:)
I've seen a Toshiba SD-200EE for £220, good price/player? Worth upgrading? Multiregion seems to be via phyical mod (ie no handset)...true? and is it easy to get hold of?
Ok requirements:
No DD/DTS decoder needed
multiregion (handset preferable, but DIY mod ok)
Fast menu (the LG's pretty slow:()
Decent layer change (but apparantly difficult to achive for most manufactures...true?)
1x RGB Scart at least, though 2 would be very nice:)
MP3/vcd not really bothered
SACD,DVDA nice to have (but not essential)
Its gonna be paired with a Toshiba 28W8DB telly and a Yamaha ax620+Tannoy mX4,mXC,mX1 system.

Pioneer 444
Or if you want 2 scarts:
Marantz 4200
Pioneer 545
Sony DVP-NS400
cool, I look for more info on those players now, thanks
Technics DVD-A10? seen it for 290...sounds like a bargin based on the reviews...anything I'm not being told??

Yeap, 2 year old! Old Panasonic DVDRV60 with DVDA, so no CD-R / RW, mp3 or other mod cons:) £290 would at a push get you DVD-A with a Panasonic DVDRA61, or a Pioneer DV646A. SACD wise a Sony DVPNS700. Decent audio wise, nearly a Marantz DV4100OSE.
Hope that helps:)
What about its picture and sound quality, and of the other players you mentioned?
I don't need MP3 playback, as I have the SliMP3 Ethernet Server...that takes my 18.5Gb of mp3's from my PC's and pumps them through the amp. CDR...not quite sure what I would need it for?
So DVD Picture and Sound quality and releated features like fast menu's and decent layer change are more important...audio cd quality distant second. So I don't need these extras like DVDA, but I'm guessing they kind of go hand in hand, right?

Considering how old that model is, No! Best avoided (a 1999 model!).

Don't agree.
This unit was origonally around £800. ( Thought it came out late 2000)
Its made in Japan, not other Far East locations and the quality is superb, no plastic , a solid aluminium fascia with nice drawer mechanics.
Very high quality components, shielded where possible, twin Dacs, and a honeycomb anti-resonance base.
For the price of it at present, if you want a good Multi-Region DVD Player, with onboard decoding and a quality touch I think its hard to beat
BTW I don't own one, so no vested interests.
I upgraded from a LG3350e to a Pioneer DV454 and it's great.

Nope, sorry... Its based on the olderA xxx range of drives (its a A360 in a aluminium box) These drives which were prone to dieing on layer changes and also blocking after so much use. Yes built quality may be ok, but for £150 you can find second hand Sony DVPS7000s, which trance the above. Or even second hand DVDRA71s which again outperform it for about £220. Quite simply, there are better performing models available for similar money new.
