Five players have been charged by the Football Association for breaching betting rules, with some accused of gambling thousands of pounds.

Four players then at Accrington - Jay Harris, David Mannix, Robert Williams and Peter Cavanagh - and Andrew Mangan, who was at Bury, have been charged.

Now its got to be an amazingly stupid player who bets on their own side to lose and not expect to be ramifications, also I guess the avg L2 game would have nowhere near the sums involved bet on them so it would have been easy to spot dubious trends.

I like the bit where they've all bet thousands apart from the one smart guy who's put it in a £5 accumulator. That's the way to do it but obviouslyt needs all the games fixing. Should be doable at League 2 level I would have thought.

As a lifelong supporter of ASFC and a season ticket holder for the last 30+ years, it's a sad day for me. Of the players involved, only 2 are still with the club, the rest left at the end of last season.

I was on the Bury game last season and I didn't see any obvious attempts to fix the game. We lost 2-0 and that was about right. Typical end of season stuff really and the result wasn't a surprise.

If the 2 that are still with the club are found guilty (they have some time to reply to the charges) then I hope they'll be sacked.
