Just noticed when checking out my "just arrived" 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back' DVD that the picture over the left hand side of the screen flickers, tried a few other discs and still the picture flickers, but only on Region 1 discs, no problem with R2 and there's no flicker through SKY Digital, i'm using a 32" Sony widescreen which i've had for a few years now and never before have i encountered this problem.

Any ideas what could be causing this problem?

interesting - i've noticed this on some discs recently - and I can't remember if it used to do it - it appears more on light films than darker ones (ie my neighbours the Yamadas is really noticable - but on the matrix it's barely noticable).

Only on NTSC, and it's towards the sides rather than in the middle - I've ruled out the player as NTSC playstation titles also exhibit the same problem.

It could just be that I have a cheap telly though (2/3 year old hitachi WS)

This problem occurs on my 8 week old JVC-AV32WFT1 on either PAL 60 or NTSC. It is now been taken away to be looked at. On movies were there were lots of bright colours, a purple patch would also appear in the bottom left corner after a while.
This is actually the second time it has been collected. The first time the idiots only tested it on Pal 50, which of course has no problem.

I've had & fixed this problem many moons ago.

traced it noisy mains/ electrical interference off another component... swapping the order around of my dvd player, video & amp and keeping the mains cables away from the scart cables solved the problem... you may need to plug a component into a different electrical socket though.

the main noise is at 50hz or similar so doesnt show up on pal, but does show up on ntsc (60hz?) since the frequencies clash.

something like that.
:D

fix worked though - so must be something in it.

lionhart... your problem sounds more like there are speakers too near to the TV.. (purple patches).. any nearby?

Yes I suffer from the same electrical noise Martin C mentions. My Kitchen is wired to the same fuse in our garage to my bedroom. When the Hoover, Kettle, Washing Machine, Toaster, Dyier or Microwave is on, it causes problems on 60Hz on my TV (i.e. NTSC)

I've been meaning to get my bedroom put on my own fuse, but haven't had time yet. For the past two years, i've just forced my family not to use the kitchen when i'm watching a movie :D

Sorted!

Since the SKY man installed "SKY" last week i haven't watched any DVDs (been buisy), the problem seemed to be with the cheap 'n' nasty scart cable which he daisy chained through my DVD player, having now re-wired everything and changed the scart cable to one of higher quality everything now seems back to normal.

Cheers. http://www.plauder-smilies.de/happy/xyxthumbs.gif

I've tried different cables and different dvd players/consoles etc and the same problems occurs. The 32" thomson which I had originally, and which had the same equipment connected, did not have any problems. I've had just the television and a dvd player plugged in, and nothing else switched on in the house, which makes no difference. The nearest speaker is shielded centre speaker under a table at least 14" away. If the speaker was causing the purple patch, why does it not show up in PAL 50?

sorry lionhart,

forgot about that bit.

noisy mains somewhere or components for the others.

maybe the jvc doesnt like the ntsc, or its just slightly off-spec?

had similar problems with a Panasonic TV and they refused to accept the problem from R1 dvds... however they would accept it from an ntsc video and gave me a swapout eventually.
