View Full Version : DONT look in if you havent seen MOULIN ROUGE
did anyone else think the ending was crap?? I mean the whole film is a nice love story were he overcomes the problems and gets his girl only to have her die instantly!! She could have at least lived 2 days, weeks, years!
Is it the normal now for big budget hollywood love stroys to leave you on a downer? :D
anyway the film was suprisingly good, the first 10mins played like Evita on LSD, but once I got into it I actually enjoyed it, except the stupid ending which was totally unneeded....
I thought it was a perfect ending to be honest.
The whole point the film makes is "It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all" Sort of spoils the meaning if he didn't lose her. I see what your saying about why did it happen instantly, if it didn't though then imagine the crap we'd have to sit and watch waiting for her to die.

In any case, it's hardly a surprise - we know that Satine is in a bad way from a very early stage.
And Baz Luhrmann is remaining absolutely true to his 19th-century role models - countless operas in particular conclude with lovers being parted forever: La Traviata, Tristan und Isolde, you could go on for pages.
Was i one of the only people to think that was film was over-rated, overacting and costumes and set so careful they make your eyes bleed. The movie over the first 30-45 mins was a constant slapstick affair with strange noises being added for affect. After this i thought it held a bit more captivation for me as we had some nice renditions of "your song" & "fly away" by ewan and nicole.
I suppose i like to take my films seriously and this can be anything but that, the end was a bit simplistic and obvious.
Lots of negatives with a few good points
Marek
I thought it was a very good film. However, I had expected a great film.
I came away quite disappointed with it in some ways. Whilst I thought Nicole was sublime I didn't feel Ewan was as good. That is not to say that I did not think him quite brilliant but for me he paled beside Nicole and that caused me to have doubts about the chemistry.
My main problem was the emotional effect. I knew she would die, we are prepared for that from the outset. However, when she did I shed no tears. For me that is quite unusual, I am unable to stop blubbering at the end of field of dreams and even in the cheesy rubbish that is Deep Impact (the child giving away scene etc). That failure lessened the impact on me to the extent that it slightly spoiled my enjoyment of the film.
However, my respect for the film and Baz Luhrman remains undiminished. It is a remarkable and brave piece of cinema.

Plus, if we're being cynical, the winner of the Oscar for best picture has featured a central character either dying or leaving their lover forever for several years in a row now...
I really didn't want to see this film, i thought it was blatantly a chick flick and not my cup of tea at all.
i was finally persuaded to watch it with my missus and i loved it!! (more than she did ironically)

I felt the same way as I did about Titanic - I found it shallow, irritating, directionless. Characterisation would have been at home in a John Smith's commercial. I believe there was a very good film in there somewhere but the editing style and the construction of most of the musical numbers really hindered the storyline. It was kind of like a beautiful poem, chopped up Dada style, and then re-arranged, but still trying to make some sort of sense. I know I 'could' have liked Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGreggor in these roles but I think Baz Luhrman's obsession with stylistic quirkiness seriously undermined both actors.
It's Friday, I'm very, very tired... Moulin Rouge gets a big fat 2/10 and those 2 are just for the art direction.

did i think the ending was crap? hmm, let's see... the whole thing was crap! each to their own i guess.... but i didnt like the style and leguizamo was just SO irritating!! not my thing :(
A superb film! Entertaining, fresh, innovative, thigh-slapping fun
As for the ending ..... she had to die. Praise to all films that do not conform to a 'made for american TV audience' trash. You just wanted to see them at it you dirty little man ;)
I truly can't understand why people don't like it. Yes it may not be a true great and many have been disappointed after the hype but how someone can't simply enjoy the fun and romance is beyond me . Try chilling out and smiling a bit more.

i do smile, thanks for asking! I certainly smiled at the end of shawshank... and I've cried in a few films... so its not im just shallow or something, it's just rouge didn't move me at all, probably coz i couldn't get into any characters as the acting was so aweful, the style was so irrtating and they took some great songs (roxanne for example) and completely screwed them up full and proper!! jst my opinion, of course :)
Ewan and Nicole made the movie for me...especially Ewan because I thought he would have been a terrible singer, but he was great...almost made me buy his album :D well maybe not ;)
I thought the start with the slapstick noises was irratating, but when we got to see the moulin rouge and the show, with the fat boy slims soundtrack,[c,c,c.CAN CAN]it was very catchy and from that point i started to enjoy it.:)

I wasn't impressed by the ending at all, I liked the film, but the central storyline has been done to death!

Well hell yes but like I said above I felt that Luhrmans overbearing stylistic direction and editing robbed the film of all the emotion that should have accompanied the final scenes - I just didn't care what happened to any of the characters, which let's face it in a love story is absolutely crucial.

Well for me something as slight as While You Were Sleeping had more emotional warmth to it than Moulin Rouge so I know I'm not just being uptight about it:) I also know that no matter how much so called "hype" a movie has received, that I am capable of accepting it on it's own terms. It's just, for me, Moulin Rouge failed on just about every level (except art direction). I couldn't describe it as a bad movie, just rather flat and souless where it should have been joyous, exuberent and, I suppose, hedonistic.

The first half is a bit of a mess, the second half is very good. Very watchable film, but the more I watch, the less I like.

I think the basic problem is that quite a few people have been calling Moulin Rouge one of the greatest films of this or any other era (hi Al!) so it’s inevitably going to be a letdown for people with their critical faculties still intact.
I completely agree that it’s hugely enjoyable (enough to make me happily sit through it three times, for instance) but it’s basically a flash in the pan and I confidently predict it will be as obscure to audiences 25 years on as Ken Russell’s more egregious 1970s efforts are now. And Lisztomania took one hell of a lot more risks in terms of both style and content!

I really enjoyed myself up until they finish singing on the Elephant - then i thought it dragged and Baz's direction got repetative.
But that's just my opinion and Leguizamo ruled!

I've just watch the R4 Moulin Rouge and I have to say I think its a fantastic spectacle ... how baz lurhman did not get nominated for an oscar is a travesty!
 I agree 100% with Cirrus - this is an absolutely sensational DVD to behold - the film is dazzling and daring, sometimes hilarious and sometimes very touching. All of the main performers are quite brilliant. I was totally blown away the first time I saw it, and subsequent viewings have not diminished by regard for this film. Would definitely put in my top 10 all time movies. I don't think it has a chance of winning the best picture Oscar though - it's just too unconventional for that....

I have to say that I first saw Moulin Rouge in the cinema and thought that it was superb. Having seen it again since on DVD my opinion has definitely not changed - this was one of my fave films of 2001.
I can however see how it is not to everyone's tastes - you either love it or loathe it!
I really enjoyed it.Fantastic film.Jim Broadbent singing "Like A Virgin" was very funny IMO.
I thought the film was fantastic the first time I saw it with the girlfiend. We went to see it at the cinema a couple of weeks later, and it had lost some of it's shine although by then we, I mean she;), had the OST so knew all the lyrics and so on, and the surprise element of the first viewing was not there.
It was certainly in my Top 6 or 7 films of last year.

Definitely my favourite cinema moment of last year! Great film - definitely in my top ten.... reminded me of bollywood films, which obvisouly influenced luhrman, but much classier
I think it is one of the best films i have ever seen - and the ending...perfect. It wouldnt have worked it she didnt die. Very sad, but a great film

I feel ill just thinking about it.
Finally got round to watching this last night (I had this on original R1 release  ).
It would probably do very well if adapted to a West End musical.
As a film - not really my cup of tea but the songs made me smile. :)
The first time I watched it the begining iritated me like hell.
The ending we knew was going to be like that - still made me cry.
I have since been captivated by the begining, as it is so unusual. You get to feel like you are really there.
Better to have watched and hated, then never to have watched at all....
Ewan Mc Gregor is - (swoon) mmmmmmm very watchable.;)

IMHO a very good film - but not as good as Baz Luhrmann's earlier films. To me it was an old classical opera performed with modern music, La Boheme comes heavily to mind (more than La Traviata as Michael Brooke has mentioned). I actually prefer the older styles. Geez I'm getting old!!
I think it would have made a great short film. There were some stunning set pieces but it would have been the patchiest film ever to win Best Picture if it had been succesful. Worth seeing if only for the CanCan and Like A Virgin - but I'd have been happier if the film was about 45 minues long.
I also think the performances of Kidman and McGregor are waaaay over-rated. Great voices, sure, but hardly great performances. Roxburgh and Broadbent are much better.
I wasn't too sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed Moulin Rouge.
Solid performances combined with wonderful work by Luhrmann in his own unique (in mainstream cinema certainly) style.
The ending didn't come as a particular shock given the ongoing state of Satine's health.
Thoroughly enjoyed the music and the film provided me with what I look for most - entertainment.

I must say I have been putting off watching this for ages. I hate musical films and can honestly say there have been few if any I have enjoyed.
I watched it (begrudgingly) last night and was absolutely captivated from start to finish!!
This film definately goes into my all time top ten.
It was a beautiful spectical (for some reason reminded me slightly of Brazil???), fantastically filmed and acted. I loved the music and was very impressed with both Nicole & Ewan's voices which complimented each other well. There were some magical scenes and also some quite nightmare-ish scenes.
All I can say is it goes against everything I like in films but WOW!!!
I too tend to dislike musicals and therefore resisted being dragged to the cinema when it came out. However, because I'd read such good things about it, I finally rented it on DVD last night and thought it was a very good film. Not the greatest film ever made but thoroughly good fun from start to finish. I thought the ending was just fine and as others have said, it wouldn't have worked any other way.
Family man said it reminded him of Brazil - well, it reminded me somewhat of Jeunet et Caro's work for some reason. But I guess they in turn were influenced by Gilliam so that makes sense.

It's not just me who hates this overrated pile of tripe, then?
Another male who grudgingly watched the DVD and again, was more captivated that the better half.
Not the greatest film of all time, but definitely great fun... ignoring the tragedy of the story of course. And certainly "Spectacular spectacular!, No words in the vernacular, Can describe this rare event. You'll be struck dumb with wonderment!"
I guess I just had a good time enjoying this film.
Having just watched this for the first time, I'm suprised at just how much i enjoyed it. A fantastic addition to my DVD collection.
Tony :)
Like many other guys in this thread I had been holding off seeing this as chick flicks just don't excite me. Got to admitt though that I was pleasently suprised. I even started to enjoy it once my head had got used to the constant two second cuts at the start.
It left me with two questions though....Why did Satine carry on working at the Moulin Rouge, almost sleeping with the Duke, when she knew she was dying, and why didn't she bother to tell Christian until she had seconds left!!
She deserves a slap!! :brickwall
