View Full Version : HKL to stop play/under18 from selling titles cheap

This is whats being posted over at BnB.

HKL have started to sell titles via their own new website, and rather worringly, both play & under18 have scrapped their huge sales of HKL titles.
It appears that HKL could be preventing online stores from under cutting their own prices.
Kiss goodbye to those £10.99 deals.

It might still be.
Im not confirming anything yet, Im hoping someone else knows more about it.
It does look quite likely though.

Unless they insist on a MAP (minimum advertised price - not even sure there is such a thing in the UK) or refuse to supply Play/Splash (which they’d be insane to do) I don’t see how they can control what other people sell their titles for. It’s a free market and if companies want to use HKL titles as loss-leaders then they will. Which I am obviously quite happy about.

They cannot do this.
It is illegal for a company to fix prices, it doesnt matter if its a dvd or a car........i expect to see cheaper prices again soon

That was my initial thought but they may have simply stopped the supply somewhere of them thus eliminating the cheap prices.

Didn't Levis stop safeway from selling their jeans cheaply. Same thing could apply here.

I thought that they stopped them from getting their jeans through overseas suppliers. HKL cannot impose such a restriction as it is illegal although there are ways around this. Let's hope that it's just a short temporary price hike from both stores :D

They stopped them from importing stuff from anywhere outside the EEC.

Price fixing is illegal in the Uk and I'm pretty much sure HKL aren't doing it. Why are you assuming the worst of a company I thought we all respected? The only thing they can be doing to stop low prices on their DVDs is adjusting their channel margins - the price they sell their disks at. If anyone's dvds are worth the full wack I think it's HKL. May they all die billionaires...

Because one day this week (I think Thursday) they had a 'Buy One DVD at full price and get another for £10' opening offer.

Anyway they have been talking about setting up a shop for a while now.

Its probably HKL who are behind the price-rises but I hardly think its a deliberate ploy on their part.

Correct me if i'm wrong (as I don't know much about the retail world) but I thought sales were based on retailers obtaining stocks at a knockdown price from the suppliers (in this case HKL who have been running promotional offers on their titles since last September) and isn't it most likely that HKL have stopped offering stock at these knockdown prices, hence Play and Under18 have stopped their sales of these titles?

As for HKLs reasons for returning the prices to normal retail levels I would simply say all sales come to an end and considering they've been running the offer for near 5months now its hardly surprising...but still disappointing.

As for their own store, I should imagine we'll get similar prices to those seen in their own catalogues (so around the £16.99 mark on popular titles, some a little lower, but most full retail at £19.99) with the main difference being the possibility of an incentive based scheme a la their Dutch store, which offers Bruce Lee posters, specially made box sets etc...

ah well, thats what I think anyway.

Price Fixing can happen in this country - Look at the row over the pricing of the Nintendo Game Cube. Nintendo announce that it's to sell at £150. The two major games retailers in the UK freak out and say that there's no way they'll sell it at that price as they'll make no profit and refuse to stock the item. It now seems that Nintendo are ammending their RRP to between £170 to £180..... This information came to me from an indipendant games retailer, so make of it what you will.

We'll you're lucky, it's not for me, and it's the only one I can not access, strange. Probably NTL is screwing things up as usual!

More on topics I think that a 15 GBP is still a decent price considering the general quality of their releases and the overpricing of everything in England! Not that I'm complaining about bargain prices mind you, it helps me build my HK collection after all :)

Well, just been to Morrisons (Preston), and they still have HKL stuff @ 8.99
The titles I noticed were Drunken Master, Iron Monkey (or whatever it is) and Jet Lis Hitman.

Does anyone know when the site is going to be launched?

HMV's 2 for £25 sale include the following HKL's: Game Of Death, The Big Boss, Way Of The Dragon, Fists Of Fury, Iron Monkey, Miracles, City Hunter, Armour Of God and Battle Creek Brawl. Interestingly enough, the sale is 2 for £25 or "as priced". My mate picked up GoD and Snatch for £25, and they're both listed as £24.99 each!!

Take advantage of our special offer.
Buy 1 dvd which is already £2 cheaper than retail price and get a second dvd for £10.
This means you can now get Snake in the Eagles Shadow & Drunken Master for a bargain price of £27.99, which would of cost a total of £15 from Under18 14 days ago.

:(

Yeah but if you get two newer titles (assuming they are £18 each) you're going to get them for £14 each, which isn't too bad but you have to get two at a time.

They are £14 at U18 and Play now anyway aren't they?

Dagada, I meant the kind of price fixing when the manufacturer insists on the price, which is illegal. It's ok for retailers to charge what they want, so long as they aren't forced to do so... they can charge over the RRP if they want.
