Yep, been looking forward to this as well. Looks like the Lost Planet engine, very pretty and hopefully it plays well. I've a feeling this might be quite linear like Lost Planet, but it would be nice if you can have the option to explore and swing around cities with some freedom. I hope we see a demo soon.
20mins quick look on Giantbomb. Looking damn good to me.

Camera movement looks pretty bad. Also the guy driving is either really bad or there's going to be a lot of smashing into walls.

I think it looks promising, but ill be getting no matter what. Looks like it will have that heart in mouth moments when your swinging and miss your grapel point

Mike Patton from Faith No More does a surprisingly decent job voicing the main character.

I don't know why they got Patton to do it: this screams Henry Rollins, if you need an ex-rock-star currently doing the voiceover-to-pay-the-bills circuit.

Well the guy did say that he wasn't concentrating as much as he was trying to talk to the Giantbomb guys so making more mistakes etc. Or else he's just really bad :D
Hopefully we'll see some reviews appearing sometime soon.
Loved the boss at the end of that demo, gave me a big grin.
Looks pretty crud to me tbh
In what way ? It looks like if you get the swinging down correctly it will be a **** load of fun. I hope GRIN have done a good job but they did brilliantly well with Bionic Commando Rearmed so I do have a bit of faith.

Demo has just gone up :) 579MB. Will post thoughts later
It's a multiplayer demo. I hope it includes some of the single player campaign mode as well. not really interested in this for multiplayer tbh.

well, the demo for this is utter balls. I can't believe Capcom thought this would be a good idea. You basically have no other option but to play in a randomly generated room (no invite friends option) and duke it out with another 6 or 7 players over a 5 minute period. The worst part of it is that there is no control tutorial so you're left to figure it all out while a bunch of randoms are trying to shoot you in the face. There I was trying to get used to the core mechanic of swinging around, and getting killed every 2 seconds in what was otherwise a very bland gaming environment (some night time level, didn't stick around to see if there were any more). It leaves with me with no better an impression of the overal gameplay than the videos have done. Way to let us down, Capcom :/
Yeah I have to agree. I only played it once (well, twice, but the first time it locked up) and the complete lack of a tutorial or just a free space for you to get to grips with the controls seems very daft in a game where all the question marks seem to lie with how it controls. What I played seemed very bland in every aspect of the game.
Apparently there's a full button layout / control guide in the options menu, so it's worth looking in there before you play.
I'm sure there probably is. The face buttons are displayed as part of the HUD (like Zelda) so you always know what they do and while it's loading the controls are also displayed. It's more that the game is about swinging about the environment and how best to make use of that technique. You get that from playing the game and in a multiplayer deathmatch environment it's not really the best introduction. That and, like Moldiver, my interest in the mp side is absolutely zero.
Moldiver
29-04-2009, 15:21
Yes, the menu has a control layout, in fact the sytem doesn't seem too complicated at first glance. Using the grapple requires just a tap of the left trigger, that with a combination of the A button to jump and reel in. Then you have Y and B buttons having something to do with melee attacks and the right trigger is your weapon. But you've no chance to get to grips with it when thrown right into the deep end of a tacked on MP gametype. You really need an open environment to swing around in and learn how to use the grapple for scaling step by step. I couldn't find the time to learn how to chain attacks for instance and use the grapple for multiple purposes, because the map provided is so small you get shot within seconds.
The graphics are also pretty underwhelming, and I wonder if they're just using a more basic code for the multiplayer aspect, a la Rainbow Six (iirc). Certainly nothing in this demo as pretty as the daytime campaign videos we've seen.
It's a shame they've gone about doing it this way. I'm still on the fence about the game because I reckon the campaign mode is bound to offer some fun moments, but this doesn't help at all in selling it. I didn't even know for instance that multiplayer was planned until I saw the demo.
Well I've been sat in lobby for over 10 mins without any players joining.

Yep. Laggy balls. But hey, at least I won the one and only game I'm ever going to play in this. And I got this my simply lagging around and heavy punching people, because the guns seem to do sod all.

Wow this is crap.. xbox graphics, as has been said, stupid "press every button in tern to find out what they are".. in 4 seconds it takes to load the crappy looking level. What idiot thought that up!
The control scheme/game I was looking forward to trying out because spiderman 2 on the PS2 is one of the most fun games I've ever played.. alas, from what I've experienced so far, this isn't in the same league. Maybe I'll spend some more bandwidth on a single player demo, but from this experience (getting shot in the face while trying the game) I'll probably pass on it.
It's a funny way to market a game.....
"Here you go, please play our product :) Now, this is a bit tricky to get used to because it's uncommon and you won't have played many games where you move like this... here's seven dicks to shoot you repeatedly while you get to grips with it... enjoy :) .. available at all got stockists £44.99 rrp"

I think they really need to get out a single player demo soon if they're feeling remotely confident about it. On the basis of the current demo I've decided I won't touch it until it drops drastically in price. I wouldn't be surprised if Capcom lose a lot of pre-orders because of this.
Played this for a few hours and so far I think it's very good. The swinging mechanic is superb but it does take a while to get used to, I'm still getting used to the timing of jumping from one place to another to get maximum momentum but it works really really well, can't fault it. The gun combat is ok as well, solid, nothing special but does the job nicely. I do like zipkicking people off buildings though, that's always fun :D
I certainly don't think it's a bad game at all, though it has some design flaws in terms of them bloody radiation walls. That and them bloody loading screens, it's annoying when you're getting into the 'swing' of things and you then get a loading screen. Shall see how I feel about it in a few hours. I can see this being a VERY decisive game.
So far so good though.
Was/Is there a collectors/Limited Edition of this game, or just standard very released??
Was/Is there a collectors/Limited Edition of this game, or just standard very released??
Just a standard release as far as I know. It's going brand new in the shops for £29.99 as well.
Finished this there now and overall I enjoyed it, would be a 7/10 game. The core swinging and combat are lots of fun but unfortunately due to some design decisions such as them bloody radiation walls and near enough instant death in water (unless you pull yourself up from it) that muddies the experience the bit.
The levels could do with being a bit better designed to give you even more free flowing movement, and get rid of them loading screens. Use streaming or have an open world.
Overall I enjoyed my time with it quite a bit. It's certainly not a keeper, this is being traded in on Monday to go towards Infamous next. But I had fun with it whilst it lasted.
One thing though which is horrible and an idiotic design move, whenever you go to the level select (or 'Level Jump' as they call it) screen it tells you that you can't save progress, earn collectibles or earn achievements whilst playing levels from here. What the hell is up with that. So in otherwords to earn achievements you have to play the story mode from 'Continue Game' or if you've already completed it from the beginning again. That is crap.
I thought this game was going to be the 2nd coming or something had really high hopes, i loved the NES version, oh well :(. Just hope Ghostbusters & Batman dont disappoint. Probably pick it up when its 15 odd quid
Weird, my gamerscore has updated and my achievements show in the dash but when I go to check them on the Xbox webiste they don't show up. Checked Mr. Woo's for comparison and it didn't show any for him either.
I'd pick this up cheap. The demo does throw you in at the deep end, but it's quite addictive. The level they give you strikes me as something more suited to arcade, but I'm sure the full game has more polish.

Doesn't appear for me either.
In case anyone's wondering, the trade in price for this at Game is 22 quid (15 quid for Afro Samurai as well). Paid 30 quid so not too bad considering you can get it for around 27 quid online, Game are selling it for 39.99!. Would have considered selling it on the forums here but want Infamous on Friday so that's that more or less paid for :D
I did consider trading elsewhere but as far as I can tell the Uncharted 2 beta code is available at Game, or I bloody well hope it is!

picked it up in Asda today for £16.70 and can't say I'm impressed that much, the tearing is bad and the swinging mechanics are poorly done. The graphics and lighting look nice (when not tearing)
I was quite a fan of the original NES title when I was a kid and I loved the remake that was released last year. I was quite looking forward to this title because I always thought that Bionic Commando in 3D had so much potential.
Initial impressions were pretty bad because the story is awful and it seemed really hard to control. Graphically it's not impressive either, especially in the early levels. But once I gained a few abilities and learned to use the arm better it started to get pretty good. Some of the fights have been truly spectacular and really intense (like the helicopter bossfight).
It's not an easy game to get into but it's a pretty good game in my opinion. I would give it a 8/10.

I spoke to soon, come across the most poorly design bit of the game, its where you have to swing across flooded motorway to get to a cutscene where the soldier is shot in the head (about 33% into the game according to the save game) Its the most unforgiving crap piece of game design, the balloon are further apart (as mentioned the swing mechanics are not spot on) when do make it across (after all the cheap deaths) there is no checkpoint after the cutscene as you have to swing onto the crane (i think) but its full of radiation :cuckoo: edit: I was suppose to drop into the gap, although the marker looks like you should go forwards
The low sales and popularity of the game shows how clueless the game developers are

a really bizarre "easter egg" in the game, where you are fighting a boss about 78% in The giant mechanical worm thing
1st time, the colonel bloke say, "you are just going to have to fight it"
if you die and try again the colonel bloke say "you are just going to have to **** it"
Got this cheap recently & been playing it over the weekend. Much more fun than the poor reviews suggested. A shame about the constant tearing as the environments are excellent. The swinging mechanism is very tricky to learn, but extremely satisfying once you get used to it. Combat is decent & the unlocking of new moves is well-paced.
So far, i'd score it a solid 7 & well worth a go if you can find it for under £20. IMO much better than the recent Prototype.

completed the game yesterday, not a great game, not a bad one but could of been so much better. Some of the enemies near the end were tougher (cheaper) than the bosses as it gave you **** weapon drops.

Picked this up yesterday for £7 from Tesco. Played the first couple of levels so far. It's quite fun but there's lots of little things that annoy about it that you wish were changed. The swinging mechanic feels very stilted at the moment, but I imagine I'll get used to it.
Reminds me of the Rearmed remake of the NES game. When I played the trial I thought it was pretty naff, and ruined by no jump feature. Then I bought the full game when it was on offer, and by the time I completed it I loved it.

I played this for an hour and had to abandon (ebay) it.
Very poor controls lead to many a frustrating death. And when you die, you've got to replay substantial parts because of a poor checkpoint system.
It also looks like a PS2 / Arcade title.
Early on at least, it's not clear what you have to do to proceed. It said hack an item, but the option wasn't there for me once I got to it.....apparently you have to kill ALL enemies in an area first, then do what the HUD is telling you to do. Very annoying.
I paid £10 and felt £10 over-charged.

That is annoying. And who's stupid ******* idea was it that when you die, any challenges you've completed since the last checkpoint have to be done AGAIN??
That said, I do like the way the challenges are implemented, it's a decent feature.

Yep, had that too. I'm ignoring the story too as it doesn't seem particularly interesting or engaging.
The engine is **** poor. Some of it looks decent but it's jerky in parts and even the sound cuts out occasionally. The menu system is rather swish, but then the screen that's constantly popping up showing you the controls is as jerky as hell.
And you seem to be looking at that loading screen a LOT. Every time you die, and also through every few minutes of gameplay.
That all said, I'm still enjoying so far. The swinging mechanic is lots of fun when you get it right.

I had this in my rental queue - balls to that!
I completed this just before xmas, did all the challenges as well so you could say I saw everything the game has to offer. I don't regret picking it up but its just a messy game, feels rushed/unfinished to me either that or just a poorly realised game. The collapsed building levels and those bloody flooded levels are the biggest culprits and they obviously make up the majority of the game. Your character dies way too easy. The graphics look pretty good on some areas but dire in others.
The last few levels were a step in the right direction and the only part of the game where the story warranted some attention (quite sick where he got his arm from ) some of the boss battles worked well too.
Didn't touch the multiplayer. :|

Well the introduction of water is just great. All of a sudden you can't move or see as it floods the camera, and you struggle to find a way to get out. All of that and it only looks like a shallow puddle.
And why does it say Game Over when you die? It's not a score attack game! Any why so many random pockets of radiation that you can't tell are deadly until you're in them?
I have heard the last few levels are meant to be the best, perhaps they started there and worked backwards? :)
Yeah with the last levels I think its more likely they got to them and were under pressure just to get it out, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they wanted to flesh them out alot more.
Without spoiling it for you theres one area where he says right its payback and you charge through an area and the game is just throwing weapon drops at you....the rocket launcher/shotgun/grenade launcher and chucks a few waves of the harder enemies at you, by that point you have both the guns and are pretty much powered up so that areas a blast but over before its begun.
Theres another section that will remind you of the helicopter scene from wolverine origins where your jumping from heli to heli except you aren't launching to helicopters and its a boss battle with alot of QTE in there. In one area you take control of a ship too....
I thought those were the areas that worked best as some of those aforementioned flooded areas and demolished buildings just weren't well designed levels, I struggled to find any real fluidity when swinging through them and spent more time slamming into walls and drowning than anything else.

Cheers for the heads up fivebyfive, just got to the part you mentioned. Didn't think the jumps across the water were that difficult though, managed it first time. And it seems clear to jump straight down after the cutscene, that's where the beacon is (and he mades a comment when you first see it)?

I am enjoying this, but there are so many things that make you want to bang your head on the desk and wonder why they made things that way.
The fact there's no colour on the map to show you radiated areas is a real crime IMHO, since you can happily swing into one not knowing as there's no visual clues (apart from on the buildings), and then you're buggered.

Right near the end of this, should complete it today. Been playing it on Hard and there are some definite tough bits which make it frustrating.
Overall it's been pretty average, but I don't think a waste of £7. The swinging mechanic is good fun, and it has some great moments, it's just also hugely let down with some really awful design decisions.
If they'd made this much more in the Metroid style, similar to the original game and recently Shadow Complex, I think it would have been a much better game. I don't think Grin would have been up to the job however, since this is what they came up with for what is effectively a pretty shallow game gameplay-wise.
