Just got back from seeing the movie today, it was just as i expected a great bit of light entertainment. It was not the greatest script in the world but with Soderbergh at the helm it was pulled together very nicely, i am very impressed with the massive change in shoting stlyle between Traffic and Oceans 11. Traffic was shot on multiple different cameras/filters and it gives a very grainy, edgy effect, whilst oceans 11 is pure 'mainstream (MTV style) hollywood. The story is great, well paced and the actors did a good job, by not overplaying the roles and just having fun. A great piece of movie entertainment that does not take itself to seriously and knows it!

I agree - good light viewing - me and the missus thoroughly enjoyed save for the character with the english accent!

Went to see it last night. It's going to take one hell of a film to change my mind about it being my film of the year.

Any film where the ending can make me grin, takes some beating. :D

Much better than the pap that was Vanilla Sky!

well i thought Vanilla Sky is one of the best so far, and Ocean's Eleven has joined that now.. i thought it was excellent, it's my favourite film from Soderbergh.

The whole section near the end when the classical music starts playing must be one of the best things he's filmed!

i think some people may find it boring, and say the heist is the only good bit, but i suppose it depends on your taste -- i loved more or less everything... although i agree with Jonathon Ross in that Julia Roberts is slightly miscast.

Excellen film!!!

Thought the film was a blast. It flew along with not an ounce of fat on the script and the kind of sure direction you get from Soderbergh. Who's on a roll now that looks unstopable.

Now that accent...I didn't think it was his actual accent but more what he was given to say. It was structured all wrong to be proper cockney. The 'luvs' and 'guvs' were all over the shop.

( BTW the 'classical' music during the fountain scene is 'Theme for young lovers' by Percy Faith! )

Saw this last night. I was a little bored near the begining and I wasn't that interested but once the actual heist started then thing definately picked up - sheer entertainment.

The cast were all good in thier own ways (though Don Cheadle should have played up his Cockney accent more!!), and I was really impressed how a heist film like this had so little violence/swearing etc something which lesser films sometimes have to rely on to make an impact. That's probably why I wanted them to suceed so much cos they were using thier brains or physical talents rather than guns and muscle.

Is it me or is Soderbergh taking lessons from Bruckheimer? Definitely shades of Jerry during the:

Bigfoot versus toy Bigfoot scene at the racetrack

Ocean's Eleven is actually a remake of a film with the same name. Daniel Ocean (George Clooney) is released from person on probation after being incarcerated for nearly 5 years. He assembles a group of crooks to rob three casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia).

The plot of the film has been done to death and this one has a very elaborate plan to rip off the casinos. The group he hires for the job are not very convincing, as they’re not nasty enough to be criminals. While performances are good enough from the likes of Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts (who’s underused) it’s not enough to sustain interest in the film. But where did Don Cheadle get that accent?

From director Steven Soderbergh you'd expect much better. His previous films are much more interesting like The Limey and even Traffic which wasn't great either. Heist films like The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and Reservoir Dogs have far more tension.

Even though this type of film has been seen numerous times before (The Italian Job & The Sting), the plan is just far too elaborate for it to work as it does have problems itself. Overall this film is above average, so if you’ve nothing better do it’s worth a look.

I couldn't agree. I thought it was ok, but it just lacked a certain depth that i crave when i have to spen a tenner to see a film at the cinema. It was a nice little film, an enjoyable watch, but i don't know if it would stand up to a few DVD viewings before i got bored of it.

It was enjoyable enough but it should've been great. The potential was there. The main problem was there was no real element of danger, no sense that things could go belly up at any second. Everything looked too easy.

Okay, but when you think what it could've been, it's a bit of a disappointment.

Is it just me or is Casey Affleck an awful actor? I thought he was useless in American Pie and not much better in this.

he wasn't in it much, but he was Kevin's brother who told him about 'the bible' - he was in the second one along the same lines.....

Big Dumb Fun.

But the Big actors aren't that great really - it's not an acting masterclass. And some are awful - Cheadle (a joke), Roberts in an dreadful part and bringing in a completely unnecessary romantic subplot. Infact, think about it – it’s the same plot as O Brother Where Art Thou – Clooney goes after a fortune with some old buddies, but it’s really a ruse to get his ex wife back! The well reviewed Elliot Gould is going by the numbers - he could still be playing his part in Bugsy... or Mash for that matter. Only Garcia stood out for me, hitting just the right note of menace.

Dumb certainly - infact the whole plot is far dumber than even Rat Race - see spoiler below.

Fun - entertaining enough, but not worth much of a fuss at all. A three star movie at a push!

OK, I know it wasn’t a serious film, infact it was half-assed farce but here goes…

Right – the first 1hr 45 mins involves planning a Casino heist – only as far as getting the cash in a vault – the getaway is left till the last 15 mins and we don’t know the details until it starts happening. This beginning even gets so ridiculous that the gang steal a near-nuclear device within 24 hours of the job!

However, think about the last 15 mins, the getaway. Garcia is not watching the robbery, but a videotape. So… 90% of the movie has been pointless as the Swat Team part of the Heist could have pulled off the whole job themselves!!! The getaway incorporated the entire original Heist as well – all with the security systems turned off! Didn’t that occur to any of them? Dear oh dear!

thought it was slow and tedious. Too much screen time wasted with inconsequential shots and images. Image over content. Apart from Clooney, Pitt, Damon and Garcia - the rest of the cast are c-list. Dialogue was poor.

Clooney looked slick however. Soundtrack was nice. Style was ok.

6/10.

spotted (or rather heard) that Brad Pitt was a SWAT officer, and too my amazement, no else seemed to.. waiting for 5 minutes after for the "oooos" and "ahhhhhss" and sniggers to shuffle from the audience..

Hugely entertaining, beautifully directed junk with enough style and poise to succeed where so many similar enterprises fail. It's incredibly difficult to pull off something as light as this without tripping up over yourself but Soderbergh proves yet again that he's the best director currently working in America.

Great casting too - Carl Reiner stole the film for me , but I thought Elliott Gould's timing was spot-on for the first time in over 20 years and it was a pleasure to watch him. George Clooney and Brad Pitt achieved the near impossible by being two thirds as cool as Frankie and Dean.

I thought the script had some plotting problems but the dialogue was consistently sharp and funny.

didn't think too much of it! just one of your average mainstream films. Easy watching, fairly entertaining but doesn't challenge the viewer. It could/should have been better, and certainly isn't worth £11 to watch in leicester square.

NO FILM is worth £11 to watch in Leicester Square.

there's cinemas across London with just as good screens for half that price.

I thought it was pleasant enough but lacked any excitement. Thinking about a few other Soderbergh films made me realise that they did too - Traffic , The Limey and Erin Brockovich all just kind of went along promisingly for a while and then finished with a rather underplayed climax - maybe there is a chink in his armour?

It was entertaining but I can't help but feel underwhelmed. With the same script, a less hot director and less big names in the cat I thik it wouldn't have been praised as much as it has

I think Garcia could see that the security guards were knocked out, maybe he'd have been able to recognize them, which they may not have been able to fake?

I thought it was a very entertaining film, expecting the worst going in (hated Traffic) but it was pretty good.

Just watched this on DVD, and didn't think much of it. :( As someone says above, it was too slow and plodding for me, and there was no tension or excitement. I also didn't really find any of it funny, and I just kept thinking 'as if this would be possible'. I know it's meant to be lighthearted, and I really wanted to like it but I just found it boring. Definately a case of style and star names over substance. :(
