Twitter is pointless - can't you just post the free delivery code? :)

great box if you are prepared to spend the time customising the software, paid £100 more for it and worth it.

the TF5800 is the best piece of equipment I think i've bought in a long time, i'm sure the 5810 is just as good but check out http://www.toppy.org.uk for more info / tutorials

recommend the MyStuff TAP to replace the Topfield EPG

Another Toppy owner hereI think mine (oviously an older model) is about 4 years old. Echo the above statements....fantastic bit of kit....great SW mods available...

And only if....

My Mrs hated the thing until I found time to stick MyStuff on it, it replaced a Tivo so had a lot to live up to, since I installed MyStuff, the machine has found favour, the only problem now is the sheer complexity of options available using MyStuff.

Does the functionality of this compare to Tivo?

To upgrade the EPG etc its safe to assume that broadband is a must?

you dont need broadband to update the epg, the files are quite small and transfer to the STB via USB cable (not supplied iirc), tv schedule data is still via freeview.

Pretty much with MyStuff installed you get full Tivo like functionality, but with only the limited EPG information available to freeview.

In fact there are many areas where it is far superior to Tivo (my Tivo is pretty much unenhanced from the default), recordings can be auto filed into folders, which is extremely useful when you've got 500GB nearly full. Season passes can be set up using far better search parameters, particularly useful is the keyword search where you only use a single channel, so if you want to record all the latest series, you tell it to search only the one channel, thus avoiding 100s of repeat shows.

Picture quality is superb compared to Tivo.

In fact the only downside seems to be the ability to view as far into the future as Tivo could manage, and that it's not 100% rock solid, unlike the Tivo - I've been forced to reboot a few times since I bought mine, but certainly not so often that its a worry.

I presume this wont be ready for the upcoming Hi Def freeview?

I've just sold my Tivo as I've upgraded to Sky HD, but this would seem like the system to go for when I get round to putting a TV in the bedroom.

When I asked about broadband, I meant to download upgrades such as MyStuff.

That may be true, but its another organisation / entity with your email address - for the sake of a free delivery code (£2.99) which you might use once or never at all. No thanks.

Why not post a forums free delivery code here or mail it to those who are already registered with boffer? If it's a tweet, surely it'll show on your twitter page and people don't need to register to see it - or am I misunderstanding what Twitter is / does?

Nope that'll need another new box I'm afraid.

I am going to wait for the new Hi Def Freeview boxes before I leap, I already have the Topfield 5800 and can't fault it good bargain if you are in the market for a PVR that stands out from the crowd.

This is a very good price for the 5810 and the only reasons I'm not going for it is because I have already got a 400GB hard disk in my 5800 and have it running via component, so there's not much point upgrading (both units run firmware that - aside from looks - offer the same features).

Anyone thinking of going for this, I will echo previous posts and say visit www.toppy.org.uk website to see what software you can install (by hooking up the 5810 to your PC via USB) - MyStuff is a superb user interface replacement/programme guide/recording timer manager that I have had installed on my machine for years.

This is very much a box designed for customising and tinkering, so be prepared to get your hands dirty installing 3rd party software if you want to get the best out of it.

It can't record fan external source, although, if you can be bothered, it is possible to encode PC based video and copy across the usb connection.

Indeed and Freesat HD available now for just another £50 with Humax Foxsat PVR prices beginning to slip (if you've got a dish of course ;) )
