I gave the disc a quick going over before sending it on to another DVDTimes reviewer (as i've already covered the R1/R2Jap releases) and I can tell you its no different Pic/Sound wise to the R1/R4 releases. From what i've read about the R4 this release is nigh on identical (its even authored by Madman), only the Trailer selections are different.

Oh, and it *might* be delayed to March 4th...but then again, it might not...

I'll put a newspiece up this weekend about it, as the review won't be till later next week...

If you can put up with the terrible dubtitles! The R4 is probably best as it is cheap (about £10) and has good pic quality, proper subtitles and the new (and rather good English dub).

It really is a tough call with Cagliostro due to the dubtitle issue. I personally own the Jap R2 version, and will quite happily watch it in Japanese without subtitles, or with subtitles, or even with the English dub (which i personally think is much better than the Manga version if only for the characterisation) while the picture is lurvely :)

But its £30, the R4 is about £10...the choice all comes down to how much cash you're willing to part with - for me its part of a collection i'm proud to own and although it was a touch decisoin to buy (as I already owned the R1 at the time) it was an easy decision as to which version to keep.

dave.

PS. For anyone who's not a Studio Ghibli maniac the R4 is a great release ;)

is the dub on COC dvd the same as the one which is being used on the version that the Sci-Fi channel ?

I really quite like that dub and would actually be annoyed if they didnt include it!!

Not having Sci-Fi makes that hard to answer, but i'd guess it probably uses the old Streamline Dub (the version on the Japanese disc, but NOT the R1/R2UK/R4 discs) unless Manga licensed it to them very recently (the new dub was recorded for the DVD release to my knowledge).

i have the R4 version, which seems to be identical to the R2, and there are two settings for the subs, one inside and one under the picture.

got this today for just over £14 and am very happy with it apart from one point

There's no Streamline English dub on it

This may seem insignificant to most people but i always enjoyed it due to its cheesiness and its a dub i've come to like very much as it's how i first saw the film.

Ah well, at least it's got the original japanese track on it and the new english dub isnt too bad, plus even though the pic is non-anamorphic (which i knew about ahead of purchasing it) it's still ten times better than watching the VHS version i saw years ago.

Also i've noticed there's no chapter listing leaflet inside, how cheap is that!

I got the R4 disc and I have just watched this last night. I really enjoyed it. I wish I had seen it sooner. Picture was surprisingly good compared to the trailer. I really recommend this to anyone remotely thinking of purchasing this. Top!

However, a company called Funimation has picked up a lot of Lupin stuff and they are releasing their first Lupin dvd this april!

sorry i should have said there's nothing else available with english subs or english dub on dvd at the minute.

There used to be a dvd of the Lupin film The Mystery Of Mamo around but its now out of print.

There were also a few Lupin tapes released but these are now out of print as well - you may be lucky and find them somewhere like a second hand shop or someplace like that.
