Help: Minor English actor from 80's (?) sitcom

We went to the theatre to see Waiting for Godot last night in MK. While we were there we saw someone in the audience we recognised from TV, but can't place him.

He is short, bit overweight, VERY tight curly shoulder length hair (Leo Sayer style), John Lennon type specs.

We picture him in an English sitcom possibly from the early 80's playing a bit of a know-it-all geeky person.

I know it's a long shot, but anyone any ideas who he is?
