View Full Version : Help choosing new Rear Speakers
I have decided to upgrade my old rear Yamahas for something that fits in with my other components better. I truly feel they let the 5.1 / DTS down on occasion :(
My other speakers are
Fronts = B&W P5s
Centre = B&W CC6
Sub = Rel Storm
I guess the obvious choice is a pair of B&Ws possibly the dipole ones but I am not too sure and they are not that cheap ~ £400-500.
The other consideration is their placement. Space is not an issue and if someone advised me to go for another set of floorstanders then that would be acceptable - I think :confused:
Otherwise how do you decied between wall mounting and dedicated stands?
All suggestions / recommendations will be welcomed plus any links to cheap retailers or current deals :D

I use B&W 601s as rears, with a similar set up for the rest as yours. I think they work quite well and they're not as expensive as the dipoles.
Are they wall mounted or what? Any reviews or info on them cranberry?? Have you heard the dipoles?

Haven't heard the dipoles. The 601 are largish bookshelf speakers. Quite a lot of forumers seem to us them as rears. You can get a Series 3 pair for around £220. I know some people also use 602s and the centre speakers (on their ends) as rears.
A review of the Series 2s (superceded by Series 3 a couple of months ago):

Stupid question but what if you don't have bookshelfs :D Can you buy stands and are they expensive?

Atacama do some stands that could support the B&Ws. I think even John Lewis sell them
That's great - thanks. There's a thread above (oops below now ;)) re B&W speakers and a link to Superfi where the S3 601s are £220 but the 602s are only £40 more and according to the review in your link above they are better.
Can I mount them on dedicated wall brackets? Well I know that I can but does this negatively affect their performance?

602s Series 3 are floorstanding, so you wouldn't want to wall mount them ;). I'm sure you could wall mount the 601s.
Not sure if this would adversley affect their performance - I guess vibrations in the wall might change the sound slightly...?
Just to point out the 602's are not floorstanding speakers, the floorstanding ones are 602.5's, 603's and 604's.

He's right you know
;)
Worth noting that B&W have just released the baby of the range, the 600 S3 - specifically designed for wall mounting.
If you're after something a little more discreet and elegant then bear in mind the B&W VM1 monitors. Very nice (bought 2 last weekend) and good sound....

Yup, missed the .5! Those 600 S3s look quite dinky. How do they sound?
If I went really mad and bought two more floorstanders as rears do they have to be a certain distance away from the back of the sofa?
I will probably go for the 601s and wall mount them but I am concerned about the effect of that on their performance but then again Superfi have said they do it all the time ;)

The 601 s3's are brand new. Why not try and pick up a pair of 601 s2's ? They were only £200 when they first came out.
