Has anyone recently bought the R2 Artificial Eye/Ruscico R2 release of Tarkovsky's classic sci-fi?

It appears that the first few moments of the film on disc 2 (including title card) are missing the English subtitles - about a minute in all. Other subtitled languages appear to be present, it's just English that is missing.

Can anyone verify if this is an error on Artificial Eye's part? Or do I have in my possession a faulty disc?

I noticed this on the AE release. I don't know if it is the same on the Ruscico disk, but I imagine it won't be any different.

You can find out what they say by switching to the English dub. I can't say I can pin-point anything important that is missed from the subtitles though.

Okay, well thanks very much for the info - the few words that are missing are indeed not too important - although I would be interested to know what the title card says in English!

I wonder if Artificial Eye are aware of the missing subtitles?

I didn't notice anything strange about the title card. I though it just said Solaris - Part 2.

The title card is in Russian, once 'view' on the menu has been selected and the film has started again. 'Solaris' is shown in Russian with something written beneath it.

I saw no subtitles - did you get 'Part 2' from the subtitles?

I think I got it from the subtitles. I'll have to check.

Okay - well, I'm certain that there are no subtitles from the title card until Khari gets into the Solaris capsule....

If you could check, that would be great. I'm wondering if I have a faulty disc.

I certainly don’t recall any gaps on the Ruscico disc, but I know the film pretty well so there’s a chance I may simply not have noticed. I’ll check tonight if I get a chance.

Thanks, I'd appreciate that.

Checked the Artificial Eye disk and can confirm that it's the same as your copy, edrch.

The Solaris Part 2 is not translated on the title screen (although it says <i>'Solaris - deuxième partie'</i> if you switch to French subtitles).

The first few lines of dialogue are not subtitled in English, but in the English dub are translated as:
- All right, get in.
- What about you?
- I have to close the launch door.
- Now, everything is in order.

The subtitling starts after this with the line:
- Yes, come quickly.

Not much to worry about - I won't be looking for a replacement. Maybe Michael has had a chance to see if the Ruscico DVD is the same.

Okay, thanks very much for the details Noel - I do appreciate it!
