I have an automatic, dslr and a Sony hd camcorder, all obvioulsy utilizing different memory cards. I'm going on holiday for 3 weeks and thought it might be cheaper to invest in some sort of storage device I could use to connect direct to the cameras/camcorder, especially considering the file size output by the Sony camcorder and the cost of the mem cards. Is there a chespish solution?

You can get something like this off eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=44&url=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Digimate-III-Large-OLED-Color-Photo-Bank-2-5-HDD-Case_W0QQitemZ180336146177QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Collectables_HardDriveEnclosures_RL?hash=item180336146177&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318) and stick a 2.5" drive in it. They are also available with hard drives already fitted.

Note the display cannot be used to review your images.

that is what i have with a 80gb drive in it. its very handy. As pkr said you cant actually view images on it. The screen basically tells you what is the remainder memory so you should make a mental note before copying and that the percentage matches up after copying. The copying from card is a tad slow though. On my 4gb compact flash, it can take up to 20mins to copy a full card. so its probably still a good idea to take a decent size card and use the hard drive at the end of the day shooting.

Unfortunately I've not looked into them that deep as yet. I generally take a laptop if I need extra storage. Sorry.

Ta, will be a gamble. A laptop would be a better solution but too expensive sadly.
