Anyone else see this?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219024/

A new cop/detective show with Nathan Fillion playing a writer 'helping' the NYPD. Pretty similar in a way to the Mentalist in that is doesn't take itself too seriously and I thought shows promise to be quite an entertaining show.

but lite crap like this (House/CSI/etc) is popular so can see this being a hit

Well, it is Nathan Fillion and he is cursed. I'm giving the first ep a watch just because it's Fillion, but it doesn't sound good.

Yeah, fair enough, the first episode was rather formulaic but 'they' say the second episode is much better so keeping my fingers crossed :)

Thought it was great myself.

Yes, it's a little generic, but Fillion's charm elevates it a long way, & he has good chemistry with the other leads.

I'll give this a watch cause Fillion is in it, but do agree with Fillion being cursed and most of his shows do get cancelled pretty quickly. What happened to the car racing one he did last year?

Drive was cancelled after about 6 episodes I think.

and after reading up about it only 4 episodes were actually aired! The other two produced were download only!

Yup the Fillion curse. Remember that show he was in with the cars, racing to the finish line? I actually liked it but it got canned, thanks to the Fillion curse imo.

This show has promise, I like the witty humor, it's formulaic but most US viewers need that repitition to get them hooked. Look at the most popular shows in the US, those crappy crime shows etc.

Fillion is very good so I hope for his sake it does well.

Drive was pretty good.

Anyway, watched this with the other half. Not knocked off our feet, but adds a lot of humor and general entertainment to a genre which generally lacks it!

I thought this was extremely boring. Fillion is always fun to watch & has some charisma but everything else was dull. No chemistry with the lead actress, a very poor, generic murder storyline, & a total lack of humour apart from a couple of mild grins at the antics of Castle's horny mother.

It makes barely watchable shows like The Mentalist, look like something HBO produces.

Thankfully, the other new show out next week, "Kings", looks much more interesting from the previews.

When I watched it, I kept looking at the actress playing his daughter and thought I had seen her before...then I realised she looked like a very young, red headed Kristin Bell.

I know she isn't related but she really does look like her!

First episode got 11.6m viewers in the US.

Not bad, but a big drop-off from its lead-in, Dancing with the Stars (which got 22.5m)

Probably didn't help that it was up against CSI Miami (14.1m).

Loved it. Two very likeable leads with good chemistry (Fillion is always good value), some decent one-liners and an interesting, less wrinkly take on "Murder, She Wrote".

Only 10 eps in the series, wonder if it'll get a second series?

Put me in the undecided camp. I didn't think the chemistry was great, but I could definitely see potential there.

Another not-particularly-original plotline, but it was nice to hear Fillion actually say out loud "I hate that kid", which never happens in these types of shows when they do the evil rich kid plotline

Viewing figures are holding kinda steady. They've dropped a bit to 11m. Still not a massive dip, & it's still in the top 20.

An audio CD edition of the novel “Heat Wave” based on the successful television series “Castle” will be released on October 12.

“Heat Wave” will be narrated by Johnny Heller.* Heller has been named one of the Top Fifty Voices of the Twentieth Century by AudioFile magazine.
The 7 CD unabridged audio recording of “Heat Wave” will be distributed by Tantor Media.

This weeks episode had probably the worst South African accent I've ever heard.

We know the person who hired the guy had to be rich and/or powerful. Straight out of the school of amazing plot contrivances what's the betting that it's the Mayor (presumably hiding some sordid secret that would have kept him out of power)? Just a guess, but it's the kind of Scooby-doo plot development that would fit in with the series.

http://series.nu/news/abc/abc-orders-more-castle/
ABC has ordered two more episodes for Castle this season taking the total number of episodes for Season 2 to 24.
Since Season 2 began viewer numbers have crept up with an increase almost every week, continuing against the trend as other shows continued to lose viewers. On October 20, ABC ordered a further nine episodes to add to the initial season order of 13.
Good news yeah? I'm guessing those 2 extra eps were taken from 'Ugly Betty' (as that show has been reduced by 2 and cancelled come the end of the season).

I'm hoping this episode rekindles the romantic side, as it's been a bit lacking in season 3 so far, in my opinion.I'm still miffed that they dropped the whole backstory of how much a fan of Castle's novels Beckett is and how they helped her cope with her mothers death. It's always the same though, the moment a detective show fails to hit 50million viewers by the end of season one the producers hit the "dumb down" button and **** any ongoing theme up.

He did a book signing tour in the US when the first book came out and I managed to find a chap via ebay (I think) offering to get copies signed :) Signed as Nathan Filllion

Great episode this week, with another nice Firefly reference (two if you count the apples, though it was a shame he didn't cut it with a knife first).

Also, whoever did the music for this episode couldn't have ripped off Inception more if they'd tried.

UKTV must have paid a lot to keep the exclusive and continue it on alibi
I guess if they alllowed older series on free TV it would dilute the value to them as a pay TV exclusive

Am I watching an episode of Castle or an advert for Windows Phone 7?

marc_angelus
03-05-2011, 10:14
lol, there's a similar moan on the Fringe thread. US tv shows are getting really bad lately for product placement. You mention the Windows phone, but have you heard how many times Castle has said "There's an app for that" this season?

statto
03-05-2011, 12:46
It wasn't much of a Windows 7 ad as the only thing I really registered was the Netflix product placement. Can you not get that on Android or iPhone?

Mevlock
03-05-2011, 13:08
Yeah the in-your-face product placement has really begun to bug me recently. Hawaii Five 0 (just Bing it!), Fringe, Castle have all suffered from it far too much recently. I don't mind it when it's subtle but recently it's just far too obvious.

Bones is by far the worst offender though, they even had an entire episode last year devoted to promoting a movie, Avatar ffs, as if not enough people went to see it anyway! Last week we got at least two references to Microsoft's Skydrive. This week we were treated to what amounted to a Toyota mini-ad showing off their automated parking system!

Borofan
03-05-2011, 15:32
Yeah, Bones's Avatar episode was a disgrace.
Modern Family's Ipad episode wasn't far behind.

marc_angelus
03-05-2011, 15:37
at least the modern family one captured real life to an extent, with everyone's obsession with getting an iPad on launch day. The avatar Bones episode was just cringeworthy.

But back to the castle one, it wasn't that bad, i think two or three times he used his phone to do something for the case, but it wasn't shoehorned in apart from the netflix occasion. And they can advertise as much as they like if they put Beckett in a swimsuit every week!

The worst one for me was the auto-park one in Bones, although it was funny when Sweets went "whoah, ghost driver" and i have to admit, that's some pretty cool tech, could revolutionize parking, both sexes will finally be able to do it!

Enjoyable ep I thought, reasonable light hearted as ever. I've seen worse product placement. (Ford cars in white collar for a start)

Castle himself seemed a but more subdued than usual, but it was a nice change of pace (& scenery), the Hollywood doubles for Ryan & Esposito cracked me up, & Beckett looked absolutely stunning throughout. :luv:

Well, quite a shocking end to the Season.

One thing's for sure, Season 4 is quite likely to be markedly different in tone and we'll get to see how good the creative team behind the show are as it shakes pretty much everything up. As a Season finale it all seemed a bit too rushed though, it really should have been a two-parter.

MASSIVE SPOILERS for Season 3 Finale

I'm not sure how I feel about the revelation of the third cop being Capt. Montgomery. Whilst they did their best to explain it away it all just seemed like a massive retcon to get a shock out of the viewer. It just doesn't really wash... One thing's for sure though, he was a really important supporting character and his demise will leave a big gap in the next season.

Also the scene where Ryan and Esposito find out he's the third cop and almost come to blows in the alley (that reads dodgy) just seemed incredibly generic. The 'Castle' show has almost always made a good job of wringing laughs from these genre conventions and to see them play that one straight, in so ham-fisted a manner, just didn't work for me. Obviously they were never going to go for laughs on that but I just don't think the dramatic writing was strong enough on that scene.

The final scene, with Beckett shot at the funeral and Castle finally telling her that he loves her... Well, it looks as if Season 4 is going to the one where Castle and Beckett finally get together. I guess the creators have kept the characters apart as long as they can, I only hope that it doesn't go the way of Moonlighting now.

Anyway, there's tons of new questions opened up so I'm looking forward to the next season for sure!

Great finale. It was kind of certain Montgomery was going to be toast after he announced his retirement in the ep before :D

Obviously Beckett is still alive, just wondering what route they will take in explaining. She was wearing a vest I guess.

Also, some fan sent this cartoon to Stana Katic. The season should have ended this way instead

I was a teeny bit disappointed with this finale as I was expecting something really shocking and really wanted something like Alexis getting killed! Now that would've been a game changer! Or even Castle's mother getting shot and killed at the funeral by accident would've really shaken things up!
I guess after The Mentalist's excellent finale this just came up short for me.

It doesn't matter if she was wearing a vest or not, she's the star of the ******* show, she's not going anywhere which kind of makes her being shot rather empty and undramatic. Plus she'll no doubt not remember Castle saying he loves her as she'll be all delirious! Pah!

Great start to season 4. Nicely handled resolution to last season's cliffhanger. The editing of the opening scenes was just superb. :notworthy

This week's case was a bit blah, but I guess it was really just background noise while we get up to speed again. Hopefully the new captain won't be quite as annoying as she was in 24 (although that looks like a slim hope if this episode is anything to go by).

Fillion looks like he's put on a bit of weight over the break too.... ;)

Colour me impressed by the way they intend to play this out! Should make for a good season.

Shouldn't Beckett have a massive scar showing every time she wears a shirt or blouse that is a bit open, like in most of this episode? That's going to really bother me.

statto
21-09-2011, 08:34
Did they say "left chest" in the hospital? If it's far enough to the side it wouldn't show (plus that means we'll get the obligatory scene with Castle running his hand over the scar to symbolise their deep connection when they eventually get down to "it").

So 4x02. Kinda nice to have it away from the story arc and just back to its usual light-hearted solve-a-murder format.

There's always the possiblity that Beckett:

Has seduced Castle to gain access to his apartment/files in a final nihilistic drive to obtain access to his source and bring the killers to justice whatever the cost to her or those around her. Wouldn't put it past the writers of this show to come up with a contrivance like that to put the romance on the back burner again. Of course, they'd have to deal with how Castle could forgive her after something like that.
