Seems the show isn't going to be cancelled according to darkhorizons. Here is what the producer David X Cohen said
"We're in what is basically an unprecedented situation in that we have so many new episodes that haven't aired yet, literally enough episodes to run the rest of this year and all of next year...So we're not cancelled in the sense that we're still on the air, we still expect to be on the air next year. We may even have a few more episodes than that than the number necessary to run this season and next season". Will there be further episodes produced though? No - "I'm still incredibly busy working on the episodes that people haven't seen yet. The show gets better and better. There are a lot of great episodes that are still going to be on. Obviously, they are letting us go out of production which means we're going to lose all of our writers and probably all of our animators. In the event which is probably a long shot, but by no means zero chance that they do decide they do want more episodes down the line. A whole new team would have to be put together, which is a big task"
Still doesn't look too good at the moment as Fox's refusal to commit to any new episodes - ie not already commissioned or in production - means that the show's future is in real doubt.
It has already been stated that the animation company needs lots of advance notice to prepare future episodes, etc and the problems occurred when this was not committed to by Fox. The biggest danger is that all the creative team will be in other projects by the time the show is ever renewed.
I think the show would not be the same if it was done by other people - why muck about with a winning formula?

Is it really so bad that a show must end at some point? I mean, look at The Simpsons, the new episodes do not have any more impact on me and the new serie is not going anywhere. Better scrapped a show when successfull and try something new. And at least I will not have to collect 10 seasons and sacrified some precious space when out on DVD... There is probably still two seasons to come, not so bad.

It may be the case that The Simpsons has been going on a bit too long (though personally I'd love it to continue forever), but Futurama hasn't been going so long and it's still too early to kill it off.
Worse still though is the cancellation (again) of Family Guy. Petition here (http://www.petitiononline.com/savefg2/petition.html) (signatures currently in the 50000s similar to the main Futurama one).

Help Save Futurama
I don't think any of us can. The only people who can are the American viewers, if it's pushed up their Nielsens ratings bigtime then maybe... That's all Fox care about.
