In NEXT weekend's Sunday Times is an 11-track CD of Noel Gallagher performing live with special guests at the Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust. It looks like it will be sold at some point so get it early, for free!

Plus, to complete the full concert, there's an extra five tracks to download free from iTunes, one each day from Tuesday; go to timesonline.co.uk/oasis (http://timesonline.co.uk/oasis) where T&Cs are also located.

The Mail on Sunday Pet Shop Boys CD...any way to rip this using wmp or soemthing else? Juts want to play it on my phone but it comes with some form of protection on it & a program to take you to HMV to buy the new album. Cheers for any advice...

Ripped in iTunes for me - also looks OK in CDEx which I use sometimes. The HMV stuff is just additional software which launches when you put the CD in - it's track 12 as a data track - but apart fgrom that tracks 1-11 should rip fine. There is no copy protection on the CD, it's just that the autoplay takes over from the usual menu.

The PSB CD is not protected. Just hold the shift key down when you insert the CD for a few seconds and that will stop the autorun program. Then you should be able to rip using any program you like.

:?: Er, why this new thread? Do threads implode when they reach 1000 posts?

The unfortunate thing is now all the subscriber links have been broken to what was clearly a very popular thread and people will have to search to find this thread and either manually re-subscribe or post something themselves to restore them. Inevitably many people will miss new postings now.

There could have been a change of title if really necessary to "Free DVDs etc..." - but is it necessary? The original thread was principally about DVDs (and CDs) because these are The DVD Forums and (unless I am wildly mistaken) the discs are the most interesting freebies to members.

Something is given away every day in one paper or another. If you want to know about the free sunglasses/seed packets/chocolate bar/dinosaur poster/puzzle magazine there is A N Other forum where they are meticulously listed.

Certainly on occasion other things were mentioned but the point of the thread was to list freebie discs. It was a service for DVD collectors, not people out for any free tat. I have nothing against a 2nd thread replacing the first but I don't think its emphasis should be changed to something as vague as things. Indeed, as you aren’t listing any other things as yet what are the criteria for inclusion?

Isn't this a bit overly-dramatic? As you pointed out, there have been no links to or mentions of "free tat" yet (except by you). And the idea that DVD collectors are holding off buying the latest bluray because they're waiting for the 4:3 aspect ratio DVD version to be given away free with the Mail is just

I'd guess that as been as it's a bargain forum the "criteria for inclusion" is whether someone thinks it's a bargain.

Took a while to track down this thread! Shows how freebies have gone through a bit of a barren spell.

However, when I picked up my Sunday Times this morning, I was lured into getting The Mail On Sunday for the free Queen CD polybagged with it. Has live versions of:

- We Will Rock You/Let Me Entertain You/Killer Queen/Bicycle Race/I'm In Love With My Car/Get Down, Make Love/Now I'm Here/'39/Keep Yourself Alive/Don't Stop Me Now along with four tracks from the original cast recording of the "We Will Rock You" musical.

Of course, you only see that they are live versions once you've bought it/opened it, as it doesn't seem to say it elsewhere. I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't the original studio recordings but I'm sure they'll be quite good anyway...

pootle
26-04-2009, 09:31
I think only us Queen fans knew it was all live material.
For me, the inclusion of "I'm In Love With My Car", noticing the other songs were all from the 1970's and the cover art looking very akin to their "Live Killers" album was the big give-away!

However, I gather the tracks have been re-mastered and the tracks show the band at the height of their live prowess when they truly did rule the world!

As a fan, it's actually quite a change for the band NOT to re-release the same old studio versions over and over again...

Unfortunately, and I know I'm being a cynical old Queen fan with years of experience (!), if this release brings a new generation of fans, it will just give the band a reason to re-release their Greatest Hits albums all over again and not release anything diferent. :brickwall

grambax
26-04-2009, 10:00
I did assume it was a live CD; as you say, the cover is virtually Live Killers.

I don't think they actually mentioned it though - A friend was complaining about the release when he heard about it, feeling they were too big for this and that it cheapened them. I don't think he realised it was live. As I said to him, I suspect they have just about reached saturation point with their established audience so they have nothing to lose, and as you say pootle, it may well introduce them to newcomers. So I'd say its win/win, or at least no loss/win! ;)

Perhaps slightly naughty to not mention it was live though, for those who don't know the album covers.

(Don't Go Back To) Rockville (Dublin)
Pretty Persuasion (Olympia)

The Telegraph will have a free DVD about my Great, Great Uncle Frederick Abberline on Saturday. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/promotions/6405141/Free-DVD-Jack-the-Ripper-starring-Michael-Caine.html)

Its the TV version staring Michael Caine of Jack the Ripper:

Free DVD: Jack the Ripper starring Michael Caine
Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning Jack the Ripper, starring Michael Caine and Jane Seymour, is free inside The Telegraph on Saturday, October 31, 2009.

The brutal murders committed by Jack the Ripper in London’s East End shocked the Victorian world. On the teeming streets of Whitechapel, prostitutes were being torn to pieces by a killer who vanished in the shadows, time after time.

Why did Queen Victoria send worried telegrams to the Prime Minister? Who ordered vigilantes onto the streets of London? Why was there so little evidence?

Leading the huge manhunt was one of Scotland Yard’s finest detectives – Inspector Frederick Abberline, played by Michael Caine.

Dont miss your free Jack the Ripper DVD inside your Telegraph on Saturday, October 31, 2009.

Takes amazing liberties with me Uncle Fred as a character (was not an alcoholic, and actually married Emma Beament (who the Jane Symour character 'Emma Prentiss' is sort of based on) a decade before the Ripper murders, but still an entertaining version of events.

More free music in The Sunday Times...

NEXT weekend's Sunday Times (so, November 22nd) has an exclusive 10-track BLUR live CD inside each copy. You can "relive Blur's sell-out summer gigs with a free 10-track live CD, featuring classics such as She's So High, Parklife and Song 2. Plus, access to unseen photos and the story behind the band's reunion."

Sounds interesting... the cover of the CD says "Live 2009" so it's definitely stuff from this year (rather than a repackage of earlier live stuff).

More free Blur... in this coming weekend's Sunday Times (Nov 29th) there's a free iTunes card allowing the holder to download five free Blur songs recorded during their sell-out summer tour, including Coffee and TV, There's No Other Way, and For Tomorrow.

T&C: iTunes account required, and downloads must be redeemed by December 2nd.

I bought the Telegraph yesterday for the DVD and was really disappointed at how poor it was. PQ was terrible in a number of places - I've done better conversions of flash clips taken from the web, onto DVD, so not sure how they managed to get it so wrong for a (sort of) commercial release. Also, nothing more than Universal have had on their site for ages promoting the opening of WWoHP. I guess good for those who've not seen any of that stuff though...

Still, I was pleasantly surprised by the newspaper itself... been ages since I've read the Saturday edition and it was a lot better than I remember it.

This coming Saturday (March 27th) The Times has a free download via iTunes of a free 10-track Massive Attack album that the band themselves have put together. There'll be the normal giftcard in with the magazines I guess, with the relevent unique code on it...

johnsy

Just a bump on the Massive Attack freebie. Not checked it out on iTunes yet for exactly what's included, but an email I had last night from The Times said the album was "entitled Selected, includes collaborations with Blur, Portishead and Manic Street Preachers, along with Paradise Circus from their new album, Heligoland, and Danny the Dog, a track from the film of the same name. These are the songs that Massive Attack want you to hear this weekend, and they’re all free."

There's also a competition in the newspaper for five people to win: The Massive Attack album back catalogue, A signed, limited edition copy of Heligoland on vinyl and CD, An additional 12inch with four new tracks, A booklet with exclusive artwork and photography. So The Times is a worthwhile sounding purchase today for fans of the band...

Massive tunes: Guide to your free tracks

1 Butterfly Caught Hypnotic incantations and fluttering breakbeats suggest 100th Window needs another listen.

2 Angel (Blur Mix) Damon Albarn’s bizarre, minimalist take on the 1998 trip-hop classic.

3 Live with Me (Stripped Back) Supremely cool after-hours lament with bluesy vocals from veteran soulman Terry Callier.

4 Karmacoma (Portishead version) Already 10,000 leagues under, the Protection fave is taken even deeper.

5 Teardrop (Radio Edit) Liz Fraser’s exquisite vocal and the foetal pulse that cocoons her still defy resistance.

6 False Flags Non-LP rarity, full of plangent political angst.

7 Paradise Circus (Gui Boratto remix) The new album’s sexiest song gets a gliding overhaul.

8 Inertia Creeps (Manic Street Preachers mix) Demonic fretwork by James Dean Bradfield supersizes the 1998 single.

9 Danny the Dog Evocative instrumental from their soundtrack to the eponymous movie.

10 Radiation Ruling the Nation Mad Professor’s inspired dub version of the 1995 classic Protection uses Tracey Thorn’s original vocal as an instrument in itself.

The most comprehensive visual history of war ever compiled, with 26 hours of footage charting the conflicts that have shaped the last 100 years – from both World Wars to the Gulf conflict.
