Really wanted to get this, but after readings reviews such as "I'd go so far as to say this is the worst HD image I've ever seen." and "To put it bluntly, this disc is a disaster." I'll probably wait for a re-release :(
I'd have gone this this but for all the reviews claiming a poor picture (assuming the UK and US disks are the same):
UK BD review at DVD Active (http://www.dvdactive.com/reviews/dvd/house-of-flying-daggers2.html)
US BD review at AV Forums (http://www.avforums.com/movies/index.php?showmediareview=8670)
Edit: Beaten to it! I'll also wait for a re-issue.

Totally disagree. If you have the R2 DVD try upscaling that and you will see how bad it is. It is miles better than the DVD. It also has brilliant DTS-HD HR audio.
That DVD Active review is a joke. I can never take anything seriously on that site. They don't even get the audio format right.
btw, the UK and US disc are not same. The UK has better encoding for a start.
The best version is the French release but that still has the same VC-1 as the UK and twice the price so don't expect another version anytime soon.
HOFD is such a pain in the arse. I have at least four different DVDs of it and all are problematic one way or the other... don't ask me how  I remember reading lots of reviews and comparisons way back.
Which is a shame as it is a great flick!
Screw it. I'm ordering one. Worth it for the improved colour stability alone IMO.

The BD is fine considering the source material.

I was going to mention, isn't it the source material that is soft focused and flawed?

I wouldn't say flawed but it is definitely soft focus. I think it suits the film well. I don't know if it is done on purpose or a side effect of the film stock used. The BD is still quite a bit sharper than the DVD and really shows on a big screen.
If the opening sequence was pin sharp my eyes would probably bleed
Beaver comparison of the SD DVDs:

My favorite ones (out of the ones I own are):
The Korean LE (in the acrylic slipcase)
The HK LE (in the big box with the bamboo pen)
Looking forward to the BD

I think it'll see a release in Asia at some point as the HK distributor Edko have released BD's, so I'll be waiting to see what they put out before buying. With both the US and UK releases being cut in some way, this'll most likely be the only way to get an Uncut English friendly version.
