I don't know if Plusnet are anything like they were when I was with them a few years ago, but back then they'd throttle P2P to death, pretty much at all times of the day.
I could easily use up 10GB in a few days, but I guess it's alright for people just wanting the internet for email and online gaming.
Last time I checked, if you were a member with Talk Talk (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=115) and have a certain package then broadband was free (30GB). I think it's around £4 extra to double the limit to 60GB.
It's good to see the price of broadband coming down, though. If only ISP's would get rid of the damn throttles.
That package is only for the first 3 months unless your exchange is Market 3, if its 1 or 2 it goes back up to £10.99 and I believe that it's either 12 or an 18 month contract.

HOLY ******* how can they do that !!!!
Terrible ISP, couldn't wait to leave them when I was with them, IMO avoid like the plague.
Yeah pretty much sums it up.
Was with them ages ago but left as soon as I could.

How can they advertise upto 8meg when they freely advertise the max speed will be about 2meg except for 2am to 12pm & then only for standard downloads...That needs to be looked at surely!
It hits max speed some of the time tho thats how they can advertise it like that

Surely there is some sort of limit on how far they can stretch the truth though, One for the ASA :)

Can only echo the earlier post comments that they were great once but kept on throttling and changing the rules/times of use almost every other week and kept on denying it.
No idea if they're any better now, although I doubt it. I left them for Zen and am now with Sky as they were miles cheaper.
Just moved over to them on the 'all you can eat' your way pro and its pretty good. Much better speeds than the joke Entanet had become.
Excellent ISP for non-data hogs.
Have used them for 7 years and never had any connection problems whatsoever.
A couple of very minor billing problems were sorted out quickly and efficiently.
What I feel is dishonest is the title of this thread. The cost is £11 a month with a 50% discount for the first three months for the vast majority of people.

* Plusnet Value broadband starts at £5.99 a month. If you live in one of our low cost areas then you'll pay this price every month. If you live outside of one of these areas then you'll pay £5.99 a month for the first 3 months and £11.99 a month thereafter.

Why not go with o2 for uncapped/unlimited for £7.50 a month?

There are very few of these areas unless you live in a major city. Although my exchange qualifies according to the Ofcom criteria it is, nontheless a '2' rather than a three.
Whatever, I believe that specifying a price that is not available to the majority of people is dishonest.

Isnt that the case with the vast majority of exchanges , hardly any have any LLU except in very large towns and cities ?

i want to get a better isp deal but dont want to move if im going to have a worse service... and don't know all this techie lingo, what does throttle mean??
it means they slow yoor connection speed down/up
I think it means - if your line speed/MAX Profile is 7150kbps, then for certain activities the line is throttled down to 512kbps then regardless of your line speed this is the maximum that you will achieve while the throttle is applied.
Isnt that the case with the vast majority of exchanges , hardly any have any LLU except in very large towns and cities ?
Exactly*.
Which is why Plus saying that that the service is £5.99 per month is dishonest.
For the majority of people it's nothing of the kind.
* Well, actually quite a few have LLU but it actually requires more than that to qualify as Market 3.

I've been with PlusNet since September 2007, and haven't had any major problems. Nothing that would make me think of switching, anyway!
About 4 months ago, I moved over to their "Essentials" package, which gave me telephone (landline) and broadband for £16.99 a month. The package won't suit everyone: they charge a set up fee on calls, so even the cheapest shortest call is about 6p; and the included download allowance is only 1GB a month. However, I make very few phone calls (2 since November), and, since I'm retired, I can take advantage of their free download period between midnight and 8 a.m. For example, last month, I used 305MB of my paid-for allowance, and 15.9GB in the free usage period.
I'm still using the Speedtouch USB modem supplied by my previous ISP (PIPEX), and according to its line monitor, PlusNet speeds are around 3 Mbps. Sometimes, it starts at around 2.5 - 2.9 Mbps, sometimes it climbs towards 4 Mbps. Right at this moment, it's reading 3.2 Mbps.
18 month contract....I don't think so

The Pro package (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=292&url=http://www.plus.net/residential/broadband/pro.shtml) is on a 12 month contract and we're looking at a monthly option for the next revision of the product set.
I could easily use up 10GB in a few days, but I guess it's alright for people just wanting the internet for email and online gaming.
There's the 'Unlimited' (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=292&url=http://www.plus.net/residential/homepage_plusnet_unlimited.html?height=670&width=600) package for those that use more. Or you could opt for Pro and pay for what you use.

Perhaps, but I'd do some background research before committing to anything ;)

Why? Like you say, we freely advertise the rate limits. We're not ashamed of them, in fact we pride ourselves on being transparent with how we manage your traffic, that's a lot more than can be said for many other ISPs.
Surely there is some sort of limit on how far they can stretch the truth though, One for the ASA :)
ASA?!? We make it pretty clear what we're offering. Like I say, we've nothing to hide.

Market 3 – those areas covered by exchanges where there are 4 or more wholesale operators. This market covers 64.4% of U.K premises.

Sorry to hear you both had problems, we went through a rough patch in 2006 but I'd like to think that we're through that now.

I'd get a router if I were you. Much less susceptible to threats, generally more stable and is likely to mean that you don't need to run as much security software on your machine. You can pick them up for next to nothing here (http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/index.asp?).
Anyways, if anybody has any questions about our new products then feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help out.

Hey nothing personal ;)
Companies are already being looked at due to the whole 'upto Xmeg' advertising.
Personally I think offering that speed during a limited time period for limited types of usage is pushing things too far.
Good for you for promoting speeds though, to be honest I think it should be mandatory anyway :)

50Kbps for newsgroups between 6 and 10pm isn't something to be proud of. I don't know any other providers who throttle anywhere nearly as much as you

Traffic on text-only news servers isn't throttled. If people don't want a throttled service anyway then we have products that cater for this. The new products won't suit everybody but no product ever will.

Except that our exchange has 4 LLU operators and caters to a population of 75,000 and the chocolate teapot Ofcom still classify it as Market 2.
Which means that when I read your puff it is dishonest. You will not supply me with what you claim to be supplying.
And why can't you provide a service at the same price to people just because of some arbotrary (and seeming capricious) Ofcom classification?
This sort of stupidity is making me take a long look at whether I want to stay with Plus.
I am with them, and yes they are rubbish and throttle to death, I can never watch BBC iPlayer in the evening and I pay £15 per month! This thread has motivated me to change, who does not throttle and represents good value please?

If I sign up for an 8mb connection and can achieve that with my line then I want 8 mb speeds.
Just because you say you are transparent with how we manage your traffic, doesn't make it right, when I buy a box of cornflakes I expect when I open it there will be cornflakes inside.
The quicker we can get some goverment legisilation on this the better,so ISP's like Plusnet will stop ripping us off.I'm sick of you lot getting away with this type of misrepresentation and its worse that you blatantly admit to it.
IMHO ISP's should tell you what the lowest speed you should expect from your line and if they fail to deliver they should fined for breach of contract.
Well I am with them and have been for many years, I love the throttling as it means my normal browsing and work is not being hit by the people doing nothing but downloading pirated material etc (ok I know some is legit but lets face it most is not).
I have not really used BBC iPlayer, but whenever I have I have got full line speed for me, but do not use in the evening. If they are throttling that then I may suggest they look if it is possible to give it a little higher priority than other P2P material.
As for this whole Market 3 stuff, I am sure they have a good business reason for it, they do not have to offer it cheap to everyone, I am sure if they could make it viable from a business point of view in the current economic climate they would!
As it stands I have no plans to leave Plusnet (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=292), their customer services have always been good and the only problems I ever have is my actual line speed but that is more a BT/distance issue and not the ISP issue.

IMHO ISP's should tell you what the lowest speed you should expect from your line and if they fail to deliver they should fined for breach of contract.
Problem is that would be zero. They should show the max & average values for their existing customer base for that particular product.

It's a shame because I had my MAC code and at 1am on Tuesday morning (I had just got home from work) I went to sign up to PlusNet's Pro package, to be greeted with your site being down (for maintenance, I thought).
Tried about an hour later with the same result, so I went to bed and thought I'd do it in the morning.
Went to sign up about 10am to find everything had changed. For better, for worse? that's for the individual to say, but your changes cost you a Pro customer.
Just frustrated that if I'd signed up an hour earlier, I'd have been on the package I wanted with the Terms that suited me. As it is, the Terms for the current Pro package don't suit.
Kevin.

Rgds,
Actually, I have an unused Voyager 210 ADSL Router, the model supplied with my original PlusNet package. However, I wasted so much time proving that the first one didn't work - involving, amongst other things, umpteen uninstalls/reinstalls of both Speedtouch and Voyager software - that I haven't yet tried the replacement that was eventually sent. One day, perhaps. :)
