Produced by Will Ferrell - starring Danny McBride.

Anyone else catch this?

Thought it was v. good - some proper belly laughs throughout. Definitely has promise. Danny McBride is awesome. He puts in a great turn here - as good if not better as his performance in Pineapple Express IMO.

Will Ferrell has a guest-starring role later on in the season, apparently...

I liked it. Some very funny stuff with his brother's family. The ending with Black Betty was cool.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I thought it was superb, Danny McBride at his self centered best. Kenny walking through High School in slo mo to The Black Keys was genius!

Anybody checked this out yet? Just finished watching the first episode and thought it was very funny with a lot of promise. Danny McBride stars as Kenny Powers, former baseball star, now a washed-out obnoxious loser, who returns to his hometown and becomes a PE teacher. Very un-PC humour, typical of the stuff Ferrell and co put out (Ferrell's an exec producer and apparently has a recurring cameo as a car salesman.)

It's a great new show, probably my favourite this year. Kenny Powers is a vile yet brilliant creation and the second episode has an even better dance scene than the first.

Oops! I searched for "Eastbound" not "East Bound"!

Which I do believe is now the correct name :) (it WAS East bound, now its Eastbound)
Anyway, have finished the second episode now and am warming to it after really not liking him to start with (although obviously the point he was a bit too annoying) One to keep an eye on I think :)

That 2nd episode was some dark dark stuff. Funny, but from about half way through on to the end it was just unapologetically dour.

The line about blowing Robocop was amazing though.

Episode two, not quite as strong as the first, but a touch darker and still very good. And Will Ferrell in another ludicrous wig!

It's pretty good. Strange choice of music for episode 2, though. Like something straight out of The Machinist or something. I half expected him to smash the geek teachers head in with that cinder block!

Watched both episodes yesterday after the recommendation here. Fabulous stuff so far, I'm really starting to warm to Danny McBride after my initial "WTF?" reaction to him in Tropic Thunder & Pineapple Express.

Foot Fist Way is still pretty bad mind.

Not too impressed. Comedy is pretty subjective I suppose. While I loved HBO's Curb and Entourage from the first episode, this didn't make me laugh enough to make the effort to watch it again.

DrVenkman
03-03-2009, 18:37
Which is odd as for me Entourage didn't work until the end of Season 1/Start of Season 2 (And now doesn't work for me at all but that's another story).

Episode 3 was great. And they even allowed a moment where Kenny seemed like an actual person but didn't dwell on it too much as it isn't that kind of show. I loved the Scout guys (Completely accurate) assessment of Kenny as well.

Only 3 episodes left!

Boink!

Only 3 episodes left!
What? Short season 1, it's cancelled or a self contained mini series?

DrVenkman
04-03-2009, 10:06
It's self contained. McBride actually cited 'The Office' and 'I'm Alan Partridge' as influence for that decision.

The idea is that the whole thing flows as one long movie.

They have said though that should HBO want to go with a Season 2 they have ideas on where to go.

MetalGearAl
04-03-2009, 11:16
Did notice that the episodes have followed on exactly from one another.

Thought 1 and 2 were ok, no huge laughs for me but enough to keep me interested. 3 was different, was laughing throughout.

Noticed that too with the jetski bit at the start of ep 2.

Watched the first two episodes I'm not finding as funny as I thought they might be especially as Ferrell is involved. If there is only a another 3 episodes left I'll probably stick with it to see where it goes. Didn't Ferrell look like he wearing a Ric Flair wig in episode two.

Still enjoying this. Felt sorry for Kenny when he blew his shot with April, literally

Just noticed on imdb that the guy who plays the principal was Ben Franklin in The Office, I see it now. He reminds me a bit of Steve Merchant in this when he has the glasses on.

DrVenkman
12-03-2009, 19:57
That was such a great moment, particulary as it was foreshadowed in Episode 1.

God that ep was so great, from the worlds worst party to Stevie suddenly imitating Kenny and that training video with 9/11 inexplicably popping up on screen.

It's a shame we're not gonna see this show on air ever again in less than 3 weeks.

watched 1-5 back to back and if i had to watch it weekly i wouldn't have bothered with episode 2. but i'm glad i didn't as it picked up pretty quickly. by the end i actually liked the guy. although, all too often i'm imagining ferrel delivering kenny's lines. it just has the air of a film that ferrel didn't want to do. maybe that's a good thing as it turned into a decent story and ferrel may have over shadowed the story

oh, and i adore april. :luv: was it me or did she get hotter as the show went on.

Robby
23-03-2009, 10:06
Was that a boob double? :suspect:

Decent ending, probably what was deserving for a character like his. Hopefully a second season is coming.

DrVenkman
23-03-2009, 14:29
It was obviously a double. Usually Nudity-actress face=Double.

I loved the ending, and the Agent (Who's also in 'Party Down' - Go watch now it's great!) just had endless quotable lines.

There's no second Season, which is so stupid but there we go. HBO renews endless Seasons of 'Entourage' (Which glorifies the Celebrity's are A-holes thing way more than this show) but they can't give another 6 episodes to this? Weak HBO, weak!

Danny McBride said they had a story for Season 2, but obviously that's never going to happen now.

fattyboombatty
25-03-2009, 06:20
felt quite sad for him at the end. i think if he just told her the truth she wouldn't have minded. but he thinks the only reason she came with him was because of his contract.

and yes i have forgotten every single character's name at the time of writing this.:D

DrVenkman
25-03-2009, 07:14
I think it's a testament to the show that they can take someone as unlikeable as Kenny Powers and gradually make you feel sorry for him. Which I certainly wasn't expecting on the basis of the first episode.

Also, according to Jody Hill, they're very seriously considering a Second (And final) season of 8 episodes. They have a very basic outline done, and they know where they want Kenny to be by the end of the whole story. But if HBO decide not to go with it then they'll be happy with the ending we got. So fingers crossed.

Really liked this. I didn't warm to it till ep 3, but that generally seems to be the case with a lot of good shows so i'm glad i stuck it out.

I think it comes across as quite crass first, but you realise after a while that that's the joke and it actually riffs on this in quite an over the top funny way.
I'd like to see a second series myself.

Kenny Powers is just a mess and the show has so much depravity and insanity in it, there's always something you think they wouldn't do, but they do it.

"April, I gotta come clean babe. There's one image in my life that consistently makes me happy no matter when I think about it. And that image, that one image, is your big tits."

I had to put it on pause until i'd recovered. Brilliant stuff, looking forward to the rest of them. The episode, not the tits. Although....;)

FX won't broadcast the 'melon-farmers' word will it?

I think I'm getting old as I thought there was too much swearing in the first ep. Enjoyed it, but it was less fun and more drama. I guess it was setting up the season.

I didn't know that none of the cast from the first season except Stevie will be regulars this season. Wasn't too impressed by the midget Mexican, so slightly concerning.

Theres too much of Kenny Powers in this one. He's too self centered and an arse. In the first series he would occasionally notice those around him whereas in Mexico he just acts like a dick.

Still enjoying the series though and glad there will be a 3rd as it's good fun. Obviously he will be heading back to the US so we will get a lot of characters back.

It's a shame that Adam Scott wont be back. His one scene was brilliant.

I thought the scene at the end was brilliant, the music just made it special with both Kenny and Steve in the car with those lovely off centre shots.

Last episode was the worst of the season, which isn't a bad thing I guess because every other one has been brilliant. Kenny was just way too serious, so there was barely any laughs seeing all the other recurring characters didn't even get a scene. But Stevie was great as per usual :D
I wonder if we'll see Will Ferrell in the last two episodes? :D

Well that one felt like a triumphant finale, except it seems like there's a 7th ep for the season? Possibly to act as an epilogue for the show, although I wouldn't say no to a third series following his 'probably not so humble' rise in the US.

Cracking music to end the sixth episode: "Comforting Sounds" by Mew (from the album Frengers) if anybody was wondering.

very good episode, and a surprisingly funny appearance by the 'talent spotter' at the end.

didn't realise there was another ep to go - this ep seemed like a natural conclusion to the season, with the third season to finish off the story

Stevie and 'ATM' :lol::lol::lol:

I have enjoyed this season more than the first. I like the setting of Mexico and the characters because it is something different, and I like the way the show is not stuck to the same sets and cast every episode. It makes each episode fresh and you feel like you are on the journey with them.

As did I! I thought this season only had 6 episodes. Result, I was missing it already as the credits rolled!

I loved the last scene of Season 2. It's a suprisingly upbeat note, but not at all overdone. I doubt Kenny will change all that much, but for once he's willing to be a little better for the sake of those around him.

I just caught up with the whole of season 1 as its on BT vision on demand for a while now. Absolutely loved it although it took a while to get into it, brilliant in the end. Just have to work out how to watch Season 2 now!

I skimmed the thread earlier, does anyone know who the April body double was then, they were magnificent!

I do defend my earlier comment that a smokey and the bandit spinoff would be great though :)

When's this coming to UK TV?

There was an advert on FX during the latest episode of Walking Dead. I think it said 15 March but not 100%. Definitely March though.

EDIT: According to FX UK's Facebook page, Thursday 15 March, 10pm.

The second episode was brilliant. The last part was just bat**** crazy. I watched it on a train last night and laughed out loud at the "Is it true you taped a spoon to a rolled up newspaper, and then tried to explore her privates?" and then what happened after it... they must have so much fun writing this

I loved the ending because of that question - it was ridiculous before.

Season 3 had its moments but not consistently up there with 1 or 2 for me. Still, a great show that I thoroughly enjoyed - glad it has come to an end.

A shame they killed it but I like to see it end on a high. I don't think I have ever laughed so loud and so consistently through any other show. You can't beat the feeling when TV seems to be written not just for your generation but for you personally.

Brilliant stuff.
