Thanks for posting the list.

Just as a matter of interest - is this the first time two black actors have been up for best actor nomination? My money would be on Smith as Ali.

IMO I would have though it more sensible to have the thread here but I can't do anything about the General Forum thread :(

Most interesting one there is Shrek Vs Monsters Inc.

New boys vs old boys. :)
My money is on Shrek (which I would've also nominated in Best Picture)

Shrek as Best Picture?? it's good, but not that good...
i'm hoping Monsters Inc wins, as i feel it's the best in terms of overall animation achievement, so what if it isn't as funny, or appeals more to kids... it's more or less faultless as an animated feature in my mind.

anyways, i hope Lord Of The Rings sweeps it, but as Jonathon Ross said on BBC24, being a fantasy film, and not your atypical oscar film, there's a lot to go against it... but i have this theory that seeing how the majority of the voters are in their 50's and i'm assuming are mostly male, that as youngsters they are very likely to be the orginal fans of the book... and especially so if they ended up in the entertainment business... so probably a huge number of closet fans??? thoughts?

(fingers crossed for LOTR!!)

just my personal opinion, but i'm not the biggest fan of BHD and Moulin Rouge getting any awards, although i think MR is guaranteed something for costume.

my predictions:

BEST FILM:
Beautiful Mind
(Want - LOTR)

BEST ACTOR:
Russel Crowe
(W - Will Smith)

BEST ACTRESS:
Sissy Spacek
(wouldn't mind seeing Halle getting though)

ACTOR SUPPORTING:
Ben Kingsley
Ian McKellen

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING:
Jennifer Connelly
(pwoooarr!)

DIRECTING:
Robert Altman
(W - Jackson)
good to see Lynch!!

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY):
Beautiful Mind
(W - LOTR)

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY):
Memento or Amelie

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM:
Shrek
(w - Monsters Inc.)

ART DIRECTION:
Moulin Rouge
(W - LOTR)

CINEMATOGRAPHY:
Amelie
(W - LOTR)

COSTUME DESIGN:
LOTR

FILM EDITING:
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
MEMENTO (would be happy to see this one get it)
MOULIN ROUGE (you're kidding!)

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM:
AMÉLIE
(being Indian, part of me wants Lagaan to win, but Amelie definately the better film)

MAKEUP:
LOTR (guaranteed surely???)

MUSIC (SCORE):
A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

MUSIC (SONG):
LOTR

SOUND:
LOTR
(not just because i'm a fan, but because it DOES have the best sound IMO)

SOUND EDITING:
MONSTERS, INC.
(really is excellent!)

VISUAL EFFECTS:
LOTR
(no question! although i think the other two have excellent SFX)

only another month left to see the stuff i haven't seen!!... looks like a fun month! :)

The usual problem is managing to see everything before the awards are made (e.g., I haven't seen any of the performances yet that are nominated for the Best Actor award) so at the moment it's hard to have any strong opinions or favourites. I'm glad there is a little more variety than usual (with some worthy films at least getting a nod even if not a great number of nominations - Memento, Mulholland Drive for example) and perhaps no one film will dominate the major categories.

I certainly hope so. I haven't seen Training Day yet but I know a couple of people who have who say he's as good as ever but the film is a bit of a let-down, opinons anyone?

I'm less convinced, especially as it wasn't made in the U.S. or directed by an American! ;)

Does Best Supporting Actor for Glory count?

I stopped taking the Oscar's seriously when they chose to ignore "Bound" back in 1997.

But now I'm really annoyed that Mariah Carey's "Glitter" hasn't been nominated at all, It's criminal!

He already has, and will probably win it again for Training Day, oridinary film and performance that it is.

Well, on the news here the story was 'first time that 3 African-Americans have been nominated in best acting category' - including Halle Berry's nomination.

I saw a Beautiful Mind last night and Russell Crowe is superb. Haven't seen Ali yet but in the clips and interviews on Film 2002, Will Smith looked and sounded fantastic.... Jon Voight sounded great too!

Denzel was as good as ever in Training Day but the film itself lets him down but then didn't Marisa Tomei win an Oscar for My Cousin Vinny?

I think LOTR will come away with a lot of awards, hopefully for Best Film, Director and Screenplay. Amelie has to win the Best Foreign film.

Struggle to see how Scott got nominated for BHD - unbeleivable it's drivel...

Hope LOTR wins loads, although as others above have said I fear it wont.....

Bit annoyed, but predictable I guess, that Ghost World only got one nomination. It at least deserved a nomination for costume design, and probably supporting actor too..

My predictions? I reckon the academy's in a thoughtful mood this year so Beautiful Mind and In The Bedroom will sweep the board..

The populist vote won't be enough to get LOTR many gongs, but Moulin Rouge or Iris could sneak in...
