I was playing COD4 with a bunch of friends in a private party last night, when some friends (only on xboxlive) of one bloke in our party crashed the "room" and basically just started behaving like your typical loud obnoxious Americans on Xbox live. We ignored them, but it ended our own group chat which naturally peeved us off a bit. After a while one of them started exclaiming: "anyone want to play cops and robbers?" repeatedly, to which I just said flippantly "no, we're not gay".

Stupid, childish remark I know, but these guys were grating big time. They responded with a little trash talk, I never uttered another word in response and the friend who they followed into our party told them in no uncertain words to shut up or get out.

However this morning one of the people (at least I assume it was one of them because I certainly don't go around insulting people at random), sent me a PM along the lines of:

Hey, don't you just hate it when you're playing against a guy who works for Microsoft who can report your console as having been modded and get you banned from Xbox Live? Just a heads up so you know who did this buddy!

Is this sort of threat quite typical for your usual Xbox fanboy? My first instinct was to just delete the message and laugh it off, but after reading online about Xbox Live bans it sounds like you don't have to do much to your user account or the console itself permanently banned by Microsoft.

My console hasn't been modded in any way btw, I barely play any of the games released in this country let alone bothering to import them!

Just send a complaint about an abusive message and they'll check it out and prolly ban him for impersonating an MS employee lol.

Log a complaint and then submit a player review to avoid 'em :)

Well, there are always idiots on live and a few private insults wouldn't be unusual. But you could always save that PM if you still have it (take a screenshot) and report the user. He's probably talking balls though. I'm pretty sure MS can detect if a console is modded.

So he works for MS then eh??? Aye, that'll be right!!!

The guy is probably all mouth (as I can't see someone who actually does work for MS acting as such a tit as this guy is) and wants to seem like a tough guy.

The only way you can get a ban is if MS can see that you are using a chipped console (which they have ways of finding out, not 100% sure how though), or if at least 10 people have filed a complaint about you. Even then you'd only be banned for a few days at least.

So, imo.... he's all bark and no bite.

Report the idiot to MS anyway. If it is an MS employee, then they'll probably ban him AND fire his ass for illegally threatening customers.

The post pathetic threat we received on there, was from some goobers who were pretending to be Infinity Ward employees because they had discovered the 'IW Clantag glitch' :dork:

We just pointed and laughed...a lot.

It was a voice message and I deleted it right away as that's what I normally do with any message I don't intend to reply to. It was only later that it crossed my mind to possibly take it seriously!

Would it show up in my profile if someone filed a complaint against me? I have a 5-star rep but with 67% of people avoiding me. The reason for that is because I like to play cagematch on COD4, and boy do most people take it bad when you kick their ass or refuse to take part in a "headshots" session! :D

I did initially think to file a complaint against him, but because I possibly insulted him last night I felt it would be hypocritical of me.

I don't think it does. You'll only find out you've been banned when you log into LIVE and it comes up with a message telling you so.

I've received very little direct abuse on Live myself but I can't really be arsed to play online anymore, and a lot of that is due to the annoying way some people behave.

It sounds obnoxious and elitist, but I wish there was a way you can set Live up just so you can play with people from the UK.

I played a game of Buzz Quiz TV a few weeks ago, and had a particularly good match against some guy who just pipped me at the post on the final question.

I sent him a PSN message saying something along the lines of "Hey, good game just then - look forward to playing again some time."

His reply, about 30 seconds later?

"Wassup bitch, wanna cyber?"

I can only assume he saw my real first name on my profile and assumed I was a girl.

I've heard people threaten stuff like this before but if they really worked for MS, they wouldn't use it as a threat especially by sending a message in black and white using their own messaging system!

Also if your console (or account) was banned for modding then you can ask them for proof of why and surely there won't be any.

They could however report you for an offensive message, but I don't think that's bannable offensive if it's a one-off?

ignore him. That will wind him up more as he'll be waiting to get a rise out of you. Little ****tards like this are what kills XBL and I wish that UK only rooms were available.

Microsoft don't employ people who would be stupid enough to state who they work for before breaking the law.

Yes this is quite normal. Of course nothing will actually happen and you won't be banned. Some people are just asses who don't like losing. I get messages all the time in COD4 from poor losers. Delete the message, leave them some bad feedback and move on is the only way to proceed.

The amount of effort that goes into these insults always manages to astound me.

I was playing with a group of colleagues on burnout and forgot to make the game private, another random player joined, I sent him a quick apology and explained it was a private game with some colleagues, he has only been in the game a minute or so and could easily move to a new game elsewhere. I thought nothing of it but the next time I logged on I had a 40 line tirade of abuse from the ejected player… in the time taken to write that he could have played on another server for about 30 minutes…. Insanity!!

From what I've read online MS refuse to give out any reasons for any ban, and don't seem receptive to anyone wanting to send their console in to prove no modding. Apparently it's part of their Terms of Service that they have carte blanche to ban for whatever reason without stating that reason.

They could however report you for an offensive message, but I don't think that's bannable offensive if it's a one-off?
Yeah it was a one off, more a slip of the tongue as we were in group chat. They just boomed "do you want to play cops and robbers" twice and I splurted it out, didn't say a word to them before or after that, none of us in the party laughed after my comment either.

Thanks for the feedback folks, the chances of this guy being a professional MS employee (especially given his reefer loving gamertag motto) have to be pretty famn remote. I guess i'll just file a complaint later.

UK people are just as bad tbh.

I've been hassled in the past coz I used claymores effectively in COD4 and apparently that was unsporting. Some guy sent me a song where he basically just sang the C word down the mic.

Agree 100%. There are far more American's who try and play the game properly and organise team-work, than there are Brit's on there. Not wanting to generalise, but it seem northerners, and scousers, are the most offensive people I have ever encountered on Live.

I haven't found anywhere near as many annoying little scrotes from the UK in my online experiences.

To be honest though, the vast majority of US gamers are fine and it isn't really fair to tar them all with the same brush.

(just did a web search, I cant believe it was a craze, I mean the only thing worse could be two girls pooping into a cup and eating it, or guys taking hatchets to their tezzies, surely nobody would be that sick)

Rarely play public games for the reason that a large percentage of people become arseholes when on XBL. Whenever I got abuse in the past it was swiftly returned....generally involving their Mum.

So there are such things as modded controllers? Now that I think about it the message said he would report that I had a modded controller not console, so there's a chance it wasn't the person I insulted but someone who was killed by me one too many in a game. Absolutely hilarious if so, because you've only got to look at my woeful accuracy stats to see I could only be using the most uselessly modded controller in the world! :D

I've never heard of modded controllers, how do they work? Surely by changing the input you can't alter the output in the game? I mean if I were to use a bolt action rifle in COD4 and had a joypad that was modded to fire a hundred times with every press of a button, I'm still limited by the actual rate of fire of the gun in the game aren't I?

Jimmyboy
10-02-2009, 22:28
I think there's a controller that allows you to use rapid fire on a bolt action. I know some other people on my team were complaining about some guy that was using one in our game once.

I get accused of that all the time in CoD4. Funnily enough, when I'm using the G3, I can just pump my finger really fast. Crazy, that.

Shingster
11-02-2009, 09:25
I'm pretty quick with the G3 as well and I'm trying to max the number of kills on it at the moment. I was playing the level with the crashed helicopter in the middle of it and racked up around 30kills with the G3, so maybe that was the game that offended this other player. I'm no where near as fast as those mod vids on YouTube though!

This. Most of the time I quite enjoy listening to the abuse online. This has nearly died a death now as most people are in party chat. Abuse was always going to come with the territory. Try not to be too sensitive.
