sorry i know people ask all the time about lenses, but i searched and couldnt find anything about the:
55-200VR.
Ive currently got a d50, 18-55 kit lens and a 50mm 1.8.
Im looking to expand my kit a bit and just really after some advice from people who may have this lens. A lot of people on flickr are advising me to spend hundreds, if not thousands on a lens for quality - but this is merely just a hobby for me.
People mention the 18-200 as a great walkabout lens but its a LOT more expensive than the 55-200 and i already have the 18-55.
Opinions?

Depends what sort of photography you're into richie - I hardly use my 55-200 at all. To date, that is.

If you want to get more width in your photos, Sigmas 10-20 would be a sweet choice. Telephoto would be well served by the 55-200 or the 70-300VR. The Sigma 70-300 APO is a decent budget choice.
My wife has the 55-200VR and it's a great little lens - not the fastest (f/5.6 at the longest end IIRC) but if the light's reasonable then it'll take some lovely shots
I'd personally go for the Sigma 10-20 but it's quite expensive, and won't help you if you don't like landscapes! (it's definitely my next lens purchase)

i'd love a sigma 10-20 because i think wide angle gives some excellent photos. I havent had much chance to do many landscapes at this point though.
i might look into the 70-300 apo as a interim lens though.
thanks a lot for suggestions, its a big help - altho now im fighting between the nikon 55-200 and sigma 70-300. the 70-300VR will be a bit much for the richie budget.

I'm in almost the same boat, D40 with Kit lens and am looking to get the Tamron 18-200 that was in the bargain forum a few weeks ago, £149 from Currys (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=5). I'm still very amater (as can be seen in my website) but I think it will be a nice move up.

D40 here with the kit lens and 55-200 VR, great lens but not as big a zoom as it sounds. Sigma 10-20 is next on my list. Then maybe a prime.
