View Full Version : Nokia 5800 thread
Hi all,
Edit: Phone now bought - Nokia 5800
I'm after a new phone, having relied on my work Blackberry for ages, I really fancy something to keep my work/private life seperate.
These are my wants/needs:
Preferably O2 (are phones still typically unlocked on O2?)
Smartphone
5MP camera
GPS
FM Radio
Speaker (I have my phone in an armband on long bike rides and like to listen to the radio as I go - but not with headphones) :dork:
Decent browser
Ability to meddle with (I'm a gadget geek and don't want to be locked into some kind of App store or signed apps)
Good battery life, I don't want to recharge every night
So far the Samsung Omnia and HTC Touch HD appeals, but I've only been looking in the last few hours.
Also, which network is generally best as far as data tariffs are concerned?
Thanks for any help,
Dave.

Nokia 5800?
Yep, would recommend the same thing. I've had one for a couple of days now & love it. The camera's "only" 3.2MP but is more than adequate & I've just come from a SE K850i. Speakers are plenty loud, can install just about any s60 apps out there & it's the size of a "normal" phone too...lovin it so far. Mines from O2 & has no branding at all, not tried any other sims in to be honest so cannot comment on it being unlocked or not. The inclusion of an 8GB card is just the icing on the cake.
Edit...I got mine via O2 retentions, have a look in the bargain forum, a few of us got some cracking deals for included mins, texts & unlimited bolt ons (mobile web for me, 200MB under FUPA I think).
Cheers, 200Mb would be plenty, it's only for light browsing while out and about. But just in case, is it easy to use it as a modem on 3G?
I'll check out the bargain forum :)
Dave.
Hi, Can't comment on the "use as modem" bit as I never would or have tbh. It does just about everything else apart from brew a cuppa (but I think that's in the next firmware update). There're oodles of reviews around for it so a google will probably bring you the answers you need. Sorry couldn't help with this info'.
Edit...Bargain thread here

I notice nobody has mentioned the Nokia N96 yet, has that fallen out of favour now? Is it generally regarded as inferior to the 5800?

I got myself the 5800 on Vodaphone, 600mins, unlimited texts and unlimited data. £35 a month but with 10 months half price line rental
Only just started playing with it last night but its lovely (i was upgrading from a sony eeric k350i though). Haven't found a thing not to like about it yet.

Just picked up a Nokia 5800 from local carphone warehouse (nothing like getting it in your hand sooner :n0rty: ). Delighted so far, very feature rich. I wanted the HTC Touch HD really, primarily because of the remote desktop support, coupled with the big display it would have been easy to control my home PC while out and about. I could have had one on Orange but not O2 for some reason. So, free phone, £15 per month plus the £7.50 for unlimited data on 3G and I can also use hotspot providers for free too.
I'm just looking for the most reliable place for symbian software now, anyone?
Happy.

Now you've got one why not change yout thread title to the Nokia 5800 thread and we can discuss properly.
Anyone found any useful applications, all the ones i downloaded seemed to want a subscription fee or were stupid (like bubble pack popper)

I think I'm going for this phone now my current contract is almost up. Do CPW only do the red version?

Tis an awesome phone, got one last week and love it, I have yet to find any usefull Symbian Apps, as rbullivant said, I have only found the 'silly' apps that dont really do anything. Although this site does offer various freeware for S60 Devices. www.mobile9.com
About apps, I've got Google Maps on it, latitude is awesome in my opinion, unfortunately I don't have many tech savvy mates who also have a compatible phone.
I've also got an IM client on there now (Slick MSN), so I can use MSN Messenger which works very well indeed (there are other IM networks that you can connect to with Slick).
The flickr client is excellent, already had a play with that and it's simplicity itself. And I have the Nokia geotagging app on there, too.
Only thing I'm not keen on is the continual nagging when I'm at home when it doesn't seem to understand that I don't need asking permission to connect to my own WLAN! I've looked through the options and can't see anything that might help yet.
A geocaching app might be useful. The one for Windows Mobile is brilliant, it connects to geocaching.com and shows you relevant caches in your area.
All in all very pleased indeed!
Dave.

I bought a Nokia 5800 from CPW yesterday (the red model). It connects to my Wi-fi network quite easily and so far installed QuickOffice, Google Maps and Mini Opera. Also installed Adobe Acrobat reader but it only appears to be a trial version and runs out after 2 weeks.
This phone is officially outstanding, I've got all the niggles ironed out with connection nags and can now find nothing I don't like about it. Battery life is amazing, on my first day off use yesterday after not having charged it properly (I know, but who has the patience for a deep charge with a new gadget?) I had the radio on with speaker, GPS and 3G all going with Google Latitude, Geotagger and a number of other apps running while I went for a bike ride for 3 hours. At the end of the day, the battery was still showing all bars.
This bodes well, looks like I got the right phone :)

Has anyone used both this and the Pixon? If so which is better?. My wife got the Pixon yesterday which i've been having a play with and it seems good enough but the lack of 3rd party apps and games is off putting. How is the Nokia for web browsing? The browser on the Pixon ****** me off at first but i'm starting to get used to it now.

I've installed a few apps which I want to get rid of. I went to the Applications Menu and selected Organise, from there I chose the Remove option but this didn't remove the program. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove an application ?

Anyone know of any GPS apps mostly for walking, basically I need to be able to see a OS grid reference of where I am as a minimum but cannot find one for free. Anything above that would be a bonus
R
Can anyone with a 5800 draw a comparison against the N95 (8GB)? I understand the camera is better in the N95, but in terms of usability of the touch screen (since it is based on the same OS), the music player and quality, and particularly surfing the web and viewing maps with the GPS - any comments most welcomed. One small thing I'm looking for (in either of these phones) is the ability to load podcasts on to it, and then save the listening position to pick up where you left off later. I don't want to have to start the podacast from scratch and then fast forward through.
Cheers, Matt.
I've just tested the podcast thing for you, looks like it starts the episode from the start even if you were already part way through. You can fast forward to any point in the podcast with a tap of the screen, though. Loading podcasts is child's play, no need to connect to your PC, there is a built in podcast client with search facility, I got my usual fix of podcasts via it yesterday. You can set it to auto update whenever there is a network connection (I have mine set to update on my home WLAN).
Google maps on this is a triumph, nice smooth pans no jittering at all, I think it's going to be my most used app (maybe Sports Tracker being a close second).
Dave.
Dave, thanks for checking that (and so fast!). As long as you can skip immediately with a tap, then  from me. Screen is much higher res than the n95 too which should bode well for web browsing/email.
Regards, Matt.
I've never enthused so much over a new phone, this is so far ahead it's amazing. There's no way I'm ever going to be bored on a long journey again!
By the way, sound quality is among the best I've experienced, maybe THE best.

Thanks Olly38, being new to the Symbian OS meant I didn't know the Application Manager existed.
A very annoying thing I discovered today is that it doesn't charge via the USB cable!
I know the Nokia N95/N95 8GB also has this problem too but you'd thought Nokia would have fixed this by now.
Despite this problem, I'm also loving this new phone. Bluetooth Stereo works a treat on it and I'm amazed that BBC iPlayer and Youtube work really well on it. The default browser renders flash quite well, mini Opera doesn't handle flash though.
I went out for a drive yesterday and Nokia Maps works really well, it locked onto a signal much quicker than my standalone Sat Nav (Garmin Nuvi), it must be the A-GPS.

Dave.
Dave, is Sports Tracker supported on the 5800 ? When I went to download it, the 5800 wasn't amongst the phones it could run on ?
Yeah, Sports Tracker might not be specifically mentioned on the site, but I downloaded it from the s60 blog, the file is called SportsTracker_S60v5_S60BLOG.COM.sisx
Works perfectly.
Dave.
Having read the glowing reviews on here and many others on the web I am very tempted to upgrade my N95 to this phone over my initial choice of the N96. One question I have is about text input though, I do a lot of texting and so wondered how easy the simulated number pad is to use as I think I'd prefer this method to the full qwerty keyboard? Is it pretty responsive and easy to use in the same was as a standard keypad?

You can use a full qwerty, small qwerty, handwriting recognition and a simulated phone keypad. I use the phone keypad myself and find in quicker and easier to use than the keypad on my old Nokia N73. The haptic feedback is a nice touch :-)

I downloaded the file from S60Blog but when I installed it via the Nokia Application Installer I get the message Certificate Expired. BTW I upgraded the firmware to v11.0.009 this morning, could this be the root of the problem ?

Yep, exactly same thing happened to me, it happens to people who have upgraded the firmware. Here's the workaround.
Backup your phone using Nokia PC Suite.
Go to make a phone call but type in *#7370# and your PIN (default 12345). This will restore the phone to factory settings/format, but the firmware stays on the newest version. Once the phone comes back on, restore from your backup (all your apps and settings will stay installed which is a god send if you've customised it).
This will get rid of the certificate expired issue and you can than install the above app :)
Dave.
I use full qwerty for some apps and simulated phone keypad for others, all of them are surprisingly usable, and as olivetti says, haptic feedback is nice.
Dave.

Hi, glad the phones working out for you Dodgy...Barnacle, can I ask what network you're on & how you got the v11.0.009 oftware on? Mine's from o2 without any apparent branding & the software updater tells me that my service provider or carrier may not have approved the latest software & to check back later...mine's currently on v11.0.008 & custom version v11.0.008.237.03. Latest update: Not updated.
Also, having never bothered with these kind of things before. Can anyone recommend a dvd to MP4 converter (free if poss) to get movies on the phone? There's loads out there but I wouldn't know a good one from bad one.
Thanks in advance...Flyer...

I've just seen mention of that new firmware in my RSS reader, but when I tried to update it's not visible in the Nokia software updater, might be a regional/carrier specific issue.

I'm on T-Mobile and I bought it as an PAYG handset from CPW. When I ran the Nokia PC Suite and Updater software, it told me that a new firmware was available so I just ran it. The problem with the latest firmware is that when you install certain apps, you get the message Certificate Expired, but following Dave's tips it got round this problem.
I use a free program called Super to convert video files to MP4.
Nice one cheers for that. I've a few tmob freebie payg sims around, I'll try a couple from different networks & see how that does. Ta Dodgy & Barnacle for the replies...

I'm due an upgrade next month and I'm being tempted by an iphone but O2 can't offer any deals on that. Is this something to consider as an alternative? I'd be using the web-browser quite a lot so mostly interested in how good that is.
:clap::clap::clap:
I've found a GeoCaching app that works on the 5800!
http://www.smartcaching.de/smartgpx.html
Be sure to follow the instructions on getting the addon file signed at symbian.com - http://www.smartcaching.de/smartgpxaddon.html
SmartGPX installed fine, but I got the certificate error with the addon, so I simply formatted again and I was back up and running in less than 5 minutes using the restore function in PC Suite.

Thanks Dodgy & Olivetti for the info on the text entry, certainly looks like this could be the phone for me. Will I miss much by upgrading to this from the N95? Also in terms of size how bulky is it?

Don't know about the N95, I've never had one, only quickly played with other peoples, but I miss nothing from my N73 and I am more than happy with the extra features; touch screen, podcasts, rss reader, flash browser, A-GPS, iPlayer, quality of music playback, speakers... I could go on listing features. It will be smaller than the N95 as it is the same width as my N73 but shallower, shorter and lighter too.
For the money it is a damn good phone, TBH for more money it would be a damn good phone.

Does anyone know how to put the Facebook icon in the Internet Menu ?
So if you get this from Carphone Warehouse (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=35) on this tariff Nokia 5800 XpressMusic on O2 for £15 per month (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=35&url=http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/new-and-exclusive/nokia-5800) are you still able to browse the web via wi-fi, or do you need to pay extra?
I assume that if I buy an unlocked SIM free phone then I can just put my T-mobile contract SIM in and use it (assuming I set up the details for 3G etc)?

You can browse the web as much as you want as long as the WLAN you're connected to is open access (i.e. one in your own home or one that has been configured without security). I pay an extra £10 per month which allows me unlimited 3g data access together with access to the network of Wi-Fi hotspots that have a partnership with O2, though I haven't tested that and don't know how it works in reality.

Yes, that's what I did. I got an O2 Prepay Upgrade at CPW (and the phone came unlocked) and put my T-Mobile contract SIM card into the phone. You can download the settings for MMS/WAP etc quite easily (I think this was done automatically for me as soon as I inserted the sim card and switched on the phone).
I linked earlier on to a geocaching app, it's pretty good, but I've just found something infinitely better. Geocache Navigator works on the 5800 and is available here http://www.geocachenavigator.com/ you have to follow the instructions on associating it with your geocaching.com account, but once you've done that it's very very good. You can see nearby caches in realtime (via your 3g connection), so no need to load up your device before setting out. Brilliant when on holiday!
Did I say I loved this phone?

Yes it does, the latest version is now available and apparently allows you to download DRM content and play it withing a certain amount of time. You could download it at home.

Would like it to have a 3G option to get the most out of it, but not really sure if its worth the extra £10 a month (if I go the O2 £15 month option) for me. I keep checking the 3 (http://www.three.co.uk/Home) website to see if they are going to do this phone, but nothing there yet.
On last question, about the Sat Nav; I think this is free for 3 months, but you have to subscribe there after. How much do you have to pay?

Well after reading this thread and trying the Samsung Pixon i decided to get the 5800 yesterday. Amazing phone so far but i seem to be having problems with google maps. The UI seems fine but my connection seems to drop out all the time. i've only used it in the house mind but both my wifi (o2 BB) and 3g connections constantly drop. Is there anyway of installing and using GM so it doesn't need the data connection? Maybe installing the full uk map on the memory card?

Very sensible! It sounds like there are some major issues with the new firmware, especially if you update it 'over the air', rather than using PC suite - it can randomise your lock code if you've got it set to something other than the default. Also some themes don't work properly on the new firmware.

You can also specify if the phone shows contacts from the sim, phone memory or both, via the contacts options page. By default it shows contacts both on sim and in memory.

I'm liking the look of this phone. My contract with 3 is up next month and I am thinking of getting the Nokia 5800 or the Samsung Tocco on O2. Both can be had for £15 per month on a 24 month contract (phone is free this way!).
Thing is, if I go for such a basic contract (100 mins + unlimited txts) will I be able to do much with the phone? Do I need to get some kind of data bolt-on?
Don't want to spend too much as I only use around 30 mins and 200 txts per month on average, but it would be nice to have some good "toys" to play with... ;)
As it has wifi, you can use that when at home but if you're out & about & wanting to send emails / casual surf etc...unless you can get a wifi hot spot, I'd seriously consider getting a data bolt on. I think o2's is £7.50 PCM unlimited (subject to FUPA) & T Mob have their web n walk service which may be worth a look?
Yep, unlimited web bolt on is £7.50 and definitely worth it. Case in point, the 5800 has a pretty good podcast client and some podcasts are 50MB+ in size, I have mine set to preferably get the latest podcasts at home on my WiFi connection, but they come down pretty quick over 3g, and you don't want to be paying for that. Managing podcast subscriptions without a PC is really useful.

I've got both handsets and the 5800 beats the Tocco by a mile. As the 5800 runs the Sybmian OS, so you can customise it by installing additional apps. The 5800 has Wi-Fi, A-GPS and a browser that can run flash (YouTube & BBC iPlayer).
Although the Tocco has a 5MP camera, the images it takes are not that good (my old SE K810i takes a better picture even though its a 3.2MP camera). The camera on the 5800 produces pictures of similar quality to the Tocco (i.e. not that great).
The haptic feedback is much better on the Tocco than the 5800. The 5800 touchscreen requires more precision when using it (hence a supplied stylus), the Tocco is better for people with fat fingers. Another good point with the Tocco is that it charges via USB whereas the 5800 doesn't. The battery time of the Tocco is also better than the 5800, I've used both phones to listen to music on the way to work and the 5800 battery runs down a lot quicker than the Tocco.
The 5800 has a standard 3.5mm headphone socket which is great if you want to use your own headphones. The Tocco uses a Samsung style connection for its headphones but it does come supplied with an adapter for regular headphones. If you have bluetooth headphones, both handsets support AD2P (Bluetooth Stereo) .
I've got a data package on my contract (7.50 per month on T-Mobile) and its well worth paying for it. I get to check my GoogleMail and Facebook when I'm out and about.

Thanks for the responses chaps!
I think I will plump for the 5800 (as I don't have sausage fingers :p)
I can get it on O2 from Carphone Warehouse for £23 pm including the unlimited wifi bolt-on.
Will quickly check to see if any better deals around then phone 3 to get my PAC code...

On the O2 website, you can get the "unlimited web" bolt on for £7.34 a month.
On the Carphone Warehouse, it says "unlimited wifi" for £8 per month...
Is this the same thing?
The CPW deal works out about £5 cheaper per month all in.
Unlimited wifi means being able to use public paid for hotspots for free.

but surely you can do that anyway, without paying for a bolt-on... hmm... may need to give this more thought
but surely you can do that anyway, without paying for a bolt-on... hmm... may need to give this more thought
Some WiFi hotspots require the user to login and pay, either using a credit card or obtaining a key from the counter (say in a cafe or similar). O2 operate a federated security arrangement with providers of WiFi hotspots (such as 'The Cloud' for one). This means you can login to these hotspots using credentials provided by O2, the credentials may either be an account with userID and password, or perhaps recognition on IMEI - I don't know (I haven't tried it), I simply don't see the point of using WiFi hotspots when 3g is close enough performance wise and it's more or less always available.
Dave.
Here you go, it's all explained here - http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/paymonthly/boltons/unlimitedwifi Your phone number is your password it seems. So anywhere there is a 'The Cloud' hotspot, you can use it for free. Here is where you can find them - http://o2-cloud.directoryconnection.com/

Does the 5800 need to be configured to use the 3g?. I've got unlimited data usage with orange but when i was out and about last night i tried using the web and it was painfully slow, youtube vids were taking ages to load, almost like old 56k dial up.
Any ideas why?
Also are there any 'Virtual Fluid' apps for the phone? Similar to the Carling pint on the iphone?

Just ordered one of these bad boys from Vodafone.
600 mins, Ultd texts, Ultd web usage for £30 a month. I think this is for 24 months though, while that is a long time I feel this phone should last me that long.
A few questions though, what's it like to use (touch screen, camera etc)? It comes with a 8gb card doesn't it?
I have a Nokia naviagtor which has the maps on, does this have the same navigation software on it sho I can just copy the maps from one memory card to another right? Or is it not that simple? Would I be best keeping my navigator as my Sat Nav and not this?

The touchscreen is good but sometimes you may need to use the stylus for web browsing, I've got away with using my fingernail instead. The haptic feedback is good but could be better though, I sometimes find its not as responsive as previous touch screen phones I've had (MDA Vario II & Samsung Tocco). Mine did come supplied with an 8GB SDHC card, it was loaded with a few MP3s and videos (5800 tutorials).
The camera is average and it doesn't have a Xenon flash. Its no replacememt for a proper digital camera.
You can download maps for free from the nokia map loader application http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/download/nokia-map-loader. The Sat Nav license (for driving & walking directions) appears to be for 3 months after that you lose it or have to pay a subscription fee (the maps are still available though)
I've ended up buying a second charger for £2.99 from 7DayShop (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=18&url=http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_12&products_id=105359) to leave at work as heavy usage kills the batteries pretty quickly (listening to MP3s, 3G, Wi-Fi & GPS).
Dave.
I've just accidentally found out that there's a better way of listening to your podcasts. If you access them via the music player instead of the 'podcasting' icon, then the podcasts play from where you last left them, and it survives the phone being turned off and on again. So that's Menu ---> Music ---> Music Player ---> Podcasts.
If you play them via menu ---> Music ---> Podcasting - they don't remember their play position.
:)

Oh I so want one of these now:nuts:
Would like it to have a 3G option to get the most out of it, but not really sure if its worth the extra £10 a month (if I go the O2 £15 month option) for me. I keep checking the 3 (http://www.three.co.uk/Home) website to see if they are going to do this phone, but nothing there yet.
On last question, about the Sat Nav; I think this is free for 3 months, but you have to subscribe there after. How much do you have to pay?
I just got out of my contract with 3 and got this phone on T-Mobile thru Carphone Warehouse.
The retentions people at 3 told me they weren't stocking this phone as there were loads of problems with it - funny how they stock the Samsung Tocco. The guy at Carphone Warehouse said 3 weren't stocking it because Nokia wouldn't give it to them!
Anyway, I got the phone free on a 24-month contract - £15 combi (100 minutes & unlimited txts) plus £5 per month for "web n walk" (1GB per month fair usage limit).
So £20 per month for a state-of-the-art phone (okay, poor man's iPhone if you insist!).
Bargain!
"Poor man's iphone" <---- There are plenty of people deliberating on which to buy and not even taking into account the cost. It's the phone I would have chose regardless of cost, it just happens to be cheap which is the icing on the cake.

I think it feels cheaper in the hand than the iPhone - Apple always rely heavily on ergonomics/aesthetics and people pay a premium for just that. I own an iPod video which is a lovely bit of kit. I am sure I could have paid less for an mp3 player that outperforms it in many ways.
Ergonomics are really important when it comes to something you handle all the time. However, when it comes to phones I was not willing to pay £35 per month and another £100 up front to have the iPhone.
I am liking the 5800 though, don't get me wrong, and I can't wait for some seriously cool apps to start showing for it.
Point taken jimjiber, I'm not into brand loyalty for the sake of it and was fairly dispassionate about my new phone choice. Ultimately the Nokia was capable of doing some of things the iPhone couldn't. Only a fool would argue that the iphone doesn't have the wow factor, it's a superb looking bit of kit.
There are quite a few nice apps coming available, I watch a few symbian RSS feeds to get the heads up on them.
Here's one of 'em - http://feeds2.feedburner.com/noknok

Just a few questions if anyone can help please.
When web browsing, any pictures come up pixelated. Facebook, Skysport etc. Is there a setting to get all the detail?
Also where and how do you set up Windows Live Messenger? Also the same with email? Can you enter pop settings anywhere or do you need to use webmail.
Thanks in advance.

I imagine this is your mobile carrier compressing all the images - they do that to save bandwidth.
Which provider are you with? I'm on O2 and the images look ok to me.
T-mobile compress all images by default unless you switch the option off.
Just ordered a 5800 on my renewal deal with Carphone Warehouse / O2. Looks pretty good so far, looking forward to playing with it soon.
Managed to get 200 texts / 200 minutes / web bolt on for £30 pm - phone free.
Anyone waded into the whole carphone warehouse / o2 200MB per month "unlimited" package details yet. Theres been quite a lot of chatter about it over on av forums and O2s stance is that its unlimited with a farir usage policy (thats supposedly still 200MB but its only enforced if your browsing indicates laptop usage - no ideal how they'd know that with these new handsets trying to provide a laptop style experience in a handset)
Cheers all

A friend has just got the 5800 and I was helping her transfer contacts etc over to the new phone. I setup an account on Ovi and the phone uploaded the contacts over the air. I tried adding a photo to a contact and it synced correctly to the phone, but when I added more contact pictures, they appear online but not on the phone. The patchy firmware update system on this phone is the one thing I don't like. V20 has been available for some weeks now for some product codes, but it's still not available for my red 5800 on O2.
Wierd, went to have a look at the sports diary on the sports tracker earlier & the phone asked if it could update, without thinking too much I thought it was an update for sports tracker & for the last 2 hours it's been "downloading update"...guessing this is the firmware thing. Won't let me cancel though to do it over wlan so it seems to be just doing it over the air!

Hi Craig - I've set up my 5800 to retrieve my virgin email account, shouldn't be too difficult to get your sky email onto your phone.
According to the skyuser faqs you first have to enable pop3 on your sky mail account.
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/index.php?news=1389
Then use this tutorial to set up your email account on your phone:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/9217_Nokia_5800_Tutorial_How_to_set.php
According to skyuser you'll use these details:
User Information:

- Email Address: Enter your full Sky Email address (username@sky.com)
Server Information:
- Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.tools.sky.com

Maybe it's too small and the phone enlarges it.
Hmm, anybody using the SportsTracker application. I updated mine yesterday, all fine & uploaded yesterdays dog walks...I know, I know, hafta start somewhere. This morning, all seems fine but when I go to the diary page to click on the walk to upload the walk, the screen isn't registering any key presses & I can't open up any of the dates to view or upload. Just mine or has anyone else got this?
Flyer, I've seen that, you need to swipe your finger on the calendar to change months, the arrow button at the top doesn't work on the 5800.
But that probably isn't what you're on about ;)
Cheers again Dodgy, odd...& slightly concerning...just tried it now & it works (The power of the forums etc). BUT, yetserday the diary always had the haptic feedback, today it doesn't. All uploaded fine & all now & ta again but don't like "random features" which then appear to fix theirselves.

Am approaching upgrade time with O2. Apart from calls/texts the other thing I mostly use a phone for is internet browsing. Am torn between the 5800 and an 8gb Iphone on the £35 a month contract over 24 months (or paying for the Iphone and getting over 18 months).
Whats browsing like on the 5800? Is the Iphone worth double the cost for the internet experience?

Browsing is pretty good on the 5800. The interface takes a bit of getting used to, but it renders the pages very well, and can handle flash. It seems to be a bit slow for no reason at times, but there's a new V21 firmware that's being gradually released across product codes that improves browsing speed.
Not that I've tried it of course - O2 are still stuck on the V11 firmware.

To get V21 you have to change the phone's product code, which could invalidate your warranty. I changed mine to a generic Euro phone that had the V21 available, updated, then changed the product code back again.
Ironically V20 was released the day after I'd updated, after waiting weeks for O2 to release it.
I did investigate getting a Nokia care centre to update it for me, but they take around 48 hours.
Aaah, the JAF thing. Cheers for replying Ravenger.

The product code is shown on the label behind the battery. If you type that into this site:
http://europe.nokia.com/link?cid=EDITORIAL_528996
You can find out what the latest firmware is available for your product code. If it doesn't show v21, then yes, at some point the product code has been changed, or the phone's been upgraded by a Nokia care centre.
To convert videos on my 5800 I've used iPod video encoding settings in various video endoding programs, and they work very well. Excellent quality, much better than my PSP.

I have a screen protector on my 5800, so no problems with it since day 1.
Bugger. that live tv/radio thing doesn't work on the N95 8GB. Shame. Hopefully they'll add it to the supporting devices.
Got the 5800 from Orange retentions a few backs. (I was after the HTC HD but Orange weren't playing ball, they wanted £200 and £35 18 month tariff. Far too much so settled for 5800 for a pretty good deal in the end just under £10 / month for 300 + 100 x-net mins, unlimited land line calls, 100 SMS, unlimited (well 500Mb) internet browsing. Not as good as some of the cash back deals I've had but less hassle for a great phone.)
My initial reaction was it was bit plasticky and cheap looking but as I've used its grown on me. I had an LG Viewty before and the 5800 is the phone it should have been with some of its annoyances fixed.
I'm not particularly keen on the builtin browser as it seems a bit sluggish and its visual response after you click a link isn't great - sometimes you're not sure if its registered as the download graph doesn't start for a while. Ended up installing the updated for 5800 Opera Mini browser which is brilliant. Websites you browse go through Opera servers so have smaller kB page sizes and load faster (eg BBC home page is 29 kb instead 105kb though the BBC mobile page at www.bbc.co.uk/mobile is a tiny 7kb). You get the full page but it collapses well into readable columns when you zoom in. So for instance when you zoom the page for The DVD Forums you can easily read the middle coloumn with the comments without having to scroll left to right.
Anyway finally got round to installing the updated firmware using the Nokia Updater Software. Gone up quiet a few steps had 11.0.009 now gone to 20.0.002. There is the newer 21.0.025 version but I'll stick with this at the moment in case there is an Orange version later.
In any case impressed with the updated firmware Photo Gallery is significantly faster, front camera working, geotagging working, overall feels smoother. Like the new in phone search and have the dictionary.

Yep, that's a great list you've pointed to.
For me, my favourites (which are mostly free) are:
Google Maps (with latitude)
Geocache Navigator
SportsTracker
Gravity for Twitter (but I've given up on Twitter now, but if you must - Gravity is the best I've tried though you have to pay for it)
Fring is good fun and possibly useful
MSN Messenger (you have to download the Chinese version, but just change the language in setup)
Bought a new 5800 from Carphone Warehouse, worked for about an hour until the battery died. It had the charger lead in and said it was charging.
Not a faulty charger because I tested it with my old phone.
Is this a common fault with them? I assume its a faulty battery. :brickwall

reading this thread with interest. Is this phone a potential Iphone beater then? Whats the music player on it like?
I've had mine for a month now.
With regards to the music player...
One of the main reasons I chose the 5800 was so I didn't have to lug an mp3 player and a phone around with me. On the whole I think it is good - not great, but good. Perfectly acceptable. There's no need for any music loading softwate, just drag and drop straight on to the device, which suits me perfectly.
Some of the UI navigation is a bit heavy, and it could do with a few more shortcuts, say to jump from now playing straight to artists/albums etc... Also, I think the screen layout could be used better, for example using different fonts, sizes etc... but like I said, on the whole it's good (just don't expect a UI as polished as an iphone).
On the audio quality, I would again say it's acceptable. Not as good as I hoped to be honest (I was using a cheapo Sony 2GB stick mp3 player before and that was definitely better IMO). But then again, I am a bit of a stickler for audio quality (I would love it if the 5800 supported flac), so I imagine it will be great for the majority of people. On the otherhand, since I use mine whilst commuting, there is always going to be background noise, so nothing is perfect.
As a podcast player it is superb in my opinion.
Also, remember a lot of these concerns/issues are likely to be sorted out in firmware updates.
As a phone...
It's fantastic. There are some niggles with the UI, but with the V21 firmware things are getting better and better. The camera is pretty good IMO (for a mobile phone), the video camera is also pretty damned good. GPS is excellent and I love the fact I can load UK and German maps straight on to the phone with no fannying around with 3G/data rates/map downloading etc...
Build quality is fine, it's a little plasticky, but for the money is perfectly acceptable. With regards to form factor, it's great to have a phone, mp3 player, gps, internet, wifi etc... in a device which is barely bigger than my old SE k750i.
Overall then, definite thumbs up from me.
Matt.

Yeah its a bit annoying that it seemed the only way to close Photo Browser was pressing the physical red key though I think most times it does shu it down completely. In any case after a bit of messing around I worked you could get a menu up like in other applications. The easiest way is to scroll to the start or end of your photos to a black part of the background (will also work if you scroll a litlle bit to left or right and see black) and press and hold on the background for about a second and you get a pop up menu with options for (basic) Image Info, Delete and Exit. This seems to always close it down properly.
I've not noticed the greenish tint you mention.
Pleased with the £10 deal I was actually calling back to accept the more borderline £15 offer they had made but without me pushing it at all he increased the mins and reduced the price  I was doubtful as he couldn't send written confirmation but its correct on my bill as expected.
I installed Opera Mini and it's a much faster and responsive browser than the built-in one. Some sites don't display correctly, and the menu system is a bit rubbish, but it's well worth a download.
I think it can't handle Flash but it seems to display most sites I use OK and is a renders pages a lot faster than the default browser. It does have one increasingly annoying bug though it seems to completely shut down randomly without warning dumping you back at the home screen. It seems to do this if you touch the screen towards the edge when scrolling or if you go outside the screen. Going to have a look later if there is some sort of solution to this.
There are another couple of browsers which in the long term look promising but aren't really workable at the moment on the 5800. They are one called Ozone (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/9465_10_minutes_with_the_Ozone_web_.php) and another called Skyfire (http://www.skyfire.com/).
I haven't had chance to download many applications yet. One that is a bit gimicky but also surprisingly useful is on the Nokia download section link on the phone is the Handwriting Calculator (http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/handwriting-calculator).
Andrew WK the closed envelope icon I think is a known bug you're still supposed to a get a small red asterix next to unread SMSs.
I like the podcasting and iPlayer features of the phone as in the past I couldn't be bothered to download podcasts to listen on the PC and it was to much hassle to copy them to an MP3 player or phone to listen to later. Its ideal having the feature on the phone so I can download something directly when I have free time to listen to something or to plug into car stereo when I'm driving.
EDIT: Just to add Nokia are finally launching the 5800 with the "Comes with music" service. If you are after this phone on an Orange contract it might be worth waiting another couple of weeks. As Orange have got the exclusive deal 24 months of unlimited music downloads which you can then keep. It seems you do have to sign up for a 2 year minimum £25 contract with some restrictions on devices you can use the music but it seems a good deal if you're likely to download music from the Nokia Music Store anyway. More info at Nokia (http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1314408).

Just downloaded V21.0.025 for my O2 Red phone.
Please can someone tell me how you change the Search option connection from the home screen. This is my problem:
* Click on Search from the Home screen
* Select Google
* Type in search word into Google search box
* Click Search
* Finds results using my wi-fi connection (when at home)
* When I click on a link from Google it ALWAYS connectes via "O2 Mobile Web"
How do I stop it from doing this? I want to be asked which connection to use because when I am at home I would tell it to use my wi-fi connection instead.
Thanks.
Upgraded to v 21.0.025 on Orange Black/Blue ? just a week after I'd gone to v 20. A great deal don't seem to have changed though it does feel a bit faster, the animation on the main menus (or did until I changed the theme) etc and the default browser seems a bit faster. The bigger album graphics in the music player is handy.
But seem to be using up a lot of memory down to about 30Mb on the handset, having only installed a few small apps so far.

I wasn't getting the download option but streaming was working ok so I was reluctant to upgrade the version of iPlayer. But last night upgraded to the newer version of iPlayer now have the download option working as well as streaming continuing to work. Is it possible that the iPlayer looks for a minimum bit rate through put or not allowing streaming, maybe you had a intermittent weak wifi signal.

Not happy with my local Nokia Care centre (housed in a Carphone Warehouse). Since my upgrade to V21 my lock code no longer works. I've tried re-installing the firmware (the official O2 V21 firmware), and a factory reset, but no joy.
Took the phone in to the care centre, explained that my lock code no longer works after a firmware update via the official updater and they said they'd have to charge me £10 to reflash it, even though I insisted it was a warranty issue, and a known problem with upgrading the firmware on that phone.
Ok, so I updated the software on my phone as Nokia advised me to by text. Now all my text messages have the unread icon (closed envelope) next to them and I can't make them show as read whatever I do. I didn't make a note of what the update was but I'm on O2.

Having upgraded the firmware to v21, my phone was locking up occasionally when I switched it on. Just the white Nokia screen, and nothing else. I had to remove the battery to reset it.
I've found a workaround of sorts in disabling the security SIM code request on startup. Now the phone always starts, but the handshaking animation sometimes doesn't play - probably the same bug
Hopefully just a bug in the latest firmware, to be ironed out in the next update..

plug it in, select 'pc suite' mode on the phone. then simply drag your app from computer to phone through the nokia pc suite (or use the dedicated app program within the nokia pc suite)

I have had a 5800 since January and thought about getting a screen protector. In the end I have not and although the screen gets dirty with finger prints, I have not got any visible scratches on the screen at all despite occasionally using the stylus, pens or pencil etc on it. It does seem like a very robust and scratch reistant screen, so far at least.
I started off using screen protectors when I was all precious about damaging the screen, but I don't bother anymore. The screen is still perfect.

Since I've updated to v21, the white light at the front keeps on turning on periodically - does anyone else have this problem?
Edit: Okay just realised that I have to turn off the 'breathing light'... what an odd feature!

Thought I would post my thoughts on some of the apps I am currently using.
Gravity: Really, really nice app for Twitter on the 5800. I am currently using the 1 day trial though I will definitely buy.
Nimbuzz: All in one contacts manager that goes across IM, Skype, Facebook etc. I am really interested in the skype aspect. Only thing I'm not sure about is whether skype calls on nimbuzz are free.
Opera Mini: Much better than the installed internet browser
Sport Tracker: Excellent, free app.
Push email facility: this is availabe via nokia messenger and gives me push email on gmail.
Radio: nice, built in radio.
Also, mods please will you check the legality of this, however nokia did apparently make a load of apps/ games free to the Hong Kong Market, and this is the link. Please feel free to delete this link if illegal.http://www.n97i.com/free-nokia-5800-applications-games-531

Just an update on some more apps I am using on my 5800:
Mobbler: Mobile last.fm client, works extremely well on my wireless LAN at home.
The app I would like to see ported across presently is Allsport GPS, though no plans are afoot so far to do this. Still like Gravity:luv:

I've had this phone for a number of months now and have still to find a decent game for it, does anyone have any suggestions?
While we're sharing app suggestions, here's a few from me:
Gravity: Agree with dancleary1, awesome Twitter app, I bought it after loving it during the 10 day trial.
Viewranger: Great for walking, cycling etc. gives you 1:25,000 maps on your phone and a lot more. Map are very affordable.
Torch: This one works well http://dev.meh.at/
Nokia Sportstracker: Use this all the time when I'm out on my bike, excellent, although the website speed sucks somewhat.
Remote desktop: Connect to your PC from your phone http://3.ly/0EY
Mail for exchange: Sync your Google calendar with your phone calendar

Guys, I'm most likely being a tad dense here, but I am trying to customise my main menu options on my new 5800 and encountering problems when trying to delete icons. I can move the icons about no problem, but when I go into Organise and try to delete anything there is no option to delete appearing on my phone. I'm on the latest firmware with O2. The phone is packed with stuff like "Welcome", "Switch", "My Nokia", "Sett. wizard" etc that I don't want cluttering things up. I know how to delete apps and have been doing this fine.
Any pointers for the afflicted welcome.

i think you have to uninstall to remove icons (or move them all into a random folder to hide them)
to uninstall go to settings, application mgr, installed apps (options, uninstall)
edit just re-read your post, i have a new folder in applications that i've moved all the welcome, mynokia crap into which keeps the main folder uncluttered

thanks for reply singhstar. Im amazed that only way to get rid of this nonsense is to hide it in a folder. Ah well cheers nokia.

these are my most used apps, the first grab is Free-iSMS which makes your texts like an iphone. all the other junk in sorted into those three folder in applications.
http://i42.tinypic.com/18k8cp.jpg
TotalRecall - records all your phone converstations automatically into small files and logs them all by caller and date
Photo Browser - nice app which uses swipes to zoom and scan pictures
Shazam - Used to 'listen' to music anywhere and it will search online for the track and artist
Garmin Mobile XT - good sat nav that uses the internal gps of the phone
Google maps - standalone app for google maps (needs data connection), allows use of streetview as well
Nimbuzz - skype, facebook, msn/yahoo messenger etc
Accuweather - weather app
JoikuSpot - Turn your phone into a wireless access point (i have the paid version which allows WEP/WPA password too) uses 3g for the internet bit
ScreenSnap - free app i used to do the screen grabs, you assign a shortcut key and can take screenshots of anything while it is running
I've just created a custom map in Viewranger, just waiting for the download link now. Nice app.

TotalRecall sounds impressive. Is that only for the latest generation symbian phones or can it be used on something like an N95?

Accuweather is pretty good, allows you to select location by GPS.
Viewranger is astonishing, I'm delighted with it. I can honestly see no reason to buy an off the shelf dedicated GPS device when you can have full OS mapping in a GPS equipped mobile. When you're in the hills, you don't want loads of electronic gadgets with you (and possibly spare batteries for each one - perhaps different sizes!). When I go up into the hills I always take a paper map with compass but hardly ever refer to it since I got memory map on my old PDA with bluetooth GPS, but Viewranger allows me just to have one device with no fiddly bluetooth add ons.
I used the PC based map selection tool and managed to get 1:50,000 scale OS maps for N.Wales, Wirral, Forest of Bowland, Peak District and the Lake District for £20. I personall find 1:50,000 perfectly adequate for walking in the hills of this country.
Very recommended, the panorama feature is brilliant!

I agree. I use it for walking and cycling and think it's excellent. I've bought a fairly large area on Mid/North Wales at 1:25,000 and it wasn't at all expensive, particularly compared to paper maps. I've been using it for 3 or 4 months and it has stopped me from getting lost on several occassions! :)

Had this phone for a few weeks now and am I enjoying barring a few niggles.
I cant seem to get the phone to connect to the PC Suite software, or upgrade the firmware which is a tad annoying as I hear the later firmware really increases the performance of the phone

My Sister just got a 5800 and she's wanting me to transfer all her contacts over from her old Sony Ericsson K850i. The only way I can see of doing it is to transfer from the K850i to the sim and then copy them to the 5800 but that messes all the names are up and various other oddities. Anyone know of a better way of doing it?
