View Full Version : Die Hard 3 - R1 - cuts?
Just a quick question for all you cut-loving dvd-guys .. :)
In the fight at the boat I'll think there's several cuts made on the Special edt. dvd. Is it just me or is there any cuts.
For instance:
When Bruce starts to really pound the german guy face in with an iron bar or something like that .. you see the arm go up and then a jump cut to bruce just leaving the body...
any comments .. and yes I'll did a search but didn't find anything..

I have heard that there are still some cuts in it, but until we get a director's cut (never, most likely) this is the best possible.
Just think about the original R2 release :brickwall .
Which R2 one is the cut one? I noticed there are two different covers for it. I have the one with the twin towers on the front.
Both UK R2 versions are cut - it's just that one's more cut than the other (apparently an airline version of some sort was used for the initial release, which was promptly recalled as it didn't have a BBFC certificate & hence illegal. The version currently on sale should be the same as the VHS release - i.e. cut but not as much as the initial DVD release).
If the cover displayed at Play is the second release, sounds like you might have the original version Joober!
I'll know that the UK R2 one is cut a bit but I'll thought that the new SE R1 should not be cut at all but the run time is stated 131 min at the cover but my player says just 128 min ..

I've the original R1 version in the 3 disc pack. Looks cut just at the end of Chapter 10 when the lads are about to shoot the security guards!
For a time the imdb alternate versions page did list that R1 SE was missing footage where bruce wraps the chain around the Germans neck after whipping him and saying all that 'Addams family stuff'. but that has been removed.
My copy has the part missing as well resulting in an ugly jump cut.

im confused, this threads about R1 DH3 SE being cut.
old R2 is cut to bits
new R2 SE is cut as well but not as much.
but how much more cut is new R2 SE compared to R1 SE ? or are they the same ?

Well I've always stated that all DVD versions (including old R1 and New R1 versions) are cut from the original cinema version I saw in Hong Kong all those years ago.

Doesn't look like BV have bothered to resubmit DH3 before the SE release, so the SE will be the same cut as previous video versions (not including the first DVD release). There are a few (relatively brief) edits to violence in the current BBFC-approved video version (e.g. the lift shootout, throat slashing at Fort Knox); also having had a quick look at my old VHS the chain fight looks identical to the R1 SE.
The most significant cuts to the UK version were in the form of dialogue re-dubs - e.g. "Fluff that McClane" becomes "Forget that McClane"; "What the fluff?" becomes "What the hell is that?"; and "Go fluff yourself" becomes "Go take a hike" (there are a few more besides).
I'd be almost certain the BBFC would have no problem passing the dialogue (and also possibly the violence) uncut at "15" were it resubmitted now, and even so I doubt it will be resubmitted in any version other than the R1 version. So as Madm@tt says it looks like the R1 SE is about as uncut as we can expect to see.

Why are John Mcteirnan films prone to cuts? First Predator, then Die Hard 3 and now rollerball!

Could someone please tell what happened here ?
I always thought this looked cut but i always thought i was wrong, whats all the 'Addams Family Stuff' he talks about ?
Also Cirrus since you are in HK is there anyway you could check out whether or not the R3 of Die Hard 3 is uncut - like rental or something like that ?
I see it's available from coolashop and if its totally uncut with extra footage then i'd buy that as well as the R1 special edition (for the extra features)

Really? Thats a bit odd because i didnt buy it at the time it was recalled, I only bought it last October in the HMV sale. You can still buy it, it just seems that there are 2 versions of the cover. One with the twin towers (mine), and one with more realistic flames without the towers (on Play27).

It seems a bit odd to have two covers for the same release, but I guess it's not unlikely. It shouldn't be too hard to spot the hacked version anyway - some of the cuts are described in this review (http://www2.r2-dvd.org/article.jsp?sectionId=4&articleId=1441) .
Just watched mine today and the whole 'lift' sequence from the federal building is in there. I guess I have the re released version. Wonder why they changed the covers then?

I seem to remember the 'flame' cover was around well before Sep 11 (could be wrong though) - so I don't think that's it.
Out of interest what does the 'twin towers' cover look like? Is it the same as the R1 SE cover (which doesn't really show the WTC towers at all)?
it has bruce, jeremy and sammy on the front with the towers next to them. the 'new' cover was out well before the sept 11th incident.
here it ios linked from hmvs website (cant access my own) :(
