View Full Version : Where on earth can I buy Secret of Monkey Island?! - It's Abandonware (I think!)

Hello!

Now, I'm not sure if this thread will be on shady ground or not, so if it's at all dodgy, please close straight away, and apologies !!

I've got a PSP, it's got Scummvm on there, and I've already been playing Beneath a Steel Sky on it ( :D )

Turns out that Scummvm can also run things like Secret of Monkey Island, but can you still buy such things? DO you just buy a PC version, then copy the CD contents over to the PSP or what?

As I say, if this is dodgy, please shut it down!

Ebay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=44) would be your best bet.

Once you own a legal copy of any SCUMM game (including Monkey Island), all you have to do is copy the required files into a directory that you then point ScummVM to. I'm not sure on the exact process for PSP but I'm sure it's similar.

You can either copy all the files on from the CD/DVD/floppy or look on ScummVM's website to see an exact list of the files that it needs.

Good luck finding a copy of the game. I think your best bet is to search eBay for the White Label Double Pack release that contained Monkey Island 1 and 2. Do a search for "monkey island -curse -escape" to narrow the results to just the first two games.

it's pretty much available on most platforms. I know there is an iphone version, and ds too :)

It's a big grey area though as generally you have to have done something dodgy, or own something dodgy to get it to work on all but pc's.

Slightly off-topic I suppose (seeing as the thread's about where to get a copy of the game) but I must voice my disagreement - Monkey Island 2:LeChuck's Revenge is clearly the best game in the world, ever! :D

If you do, I'd be interested in a purchase!

Used to have this on the amiga years ago, it was on about 12 discs I think. Actually, now I think about it, I think I bought my 80mb hard drive for the Amiga, solely to play this game!

People are right, you do have to fiddle your PSP to get it to run stuff like scummvm (I think!) but I'd pay for Monkey Island! Beneath a steel sky is great for a bit of nostalgia, and you can get that for free, legit too!

Well, postage maybes ;)

We're in a recession you know, hence me playing games that are incredibly old! Plus my wife is due our second baby in a month or so - I can't go frittering my cash away on new games these days, it's old school for me ;)

Monkey Island is a better game than 2 but 2 is still top banana.

ScummVM (on the PC at least) is one of the easiest things to use! Plus the graphical filters make the old games look gorgeous. I must play Full Throttle again soon.

Monkey Island 2 was probably my favourite. I never finished the fourth.

What's the legal status of abandonware? I'd have thought a game of this vintage would be a prime candidate.

so i can play monkey 3 and 4 on my pc then (as i have those games) using scumm program. stopped trying when i got Xp (and then vista), think i was about 1/2 way through the 3rd.

Legal copies on a normal DS cart would be aces, can't believe someone at lucasarts can't knock one up in a few weeks, it would make a bomb at £20!!!!!!!!!

LeftHandedGuitarist

You can play the first three Monkey Island games, the fourth ones runs on a completely different engine. In my experience playing through ScummVM has been a far richer experience than playing the original versions back in the 90's.

What I have done personally is installed ScummVM onto my computer and then I have all the essential files from my SCUMM games on a single DVD. Then I just put the disc in, point ScummVM to each game directory and can play any game at will.

Well, a bit of research (i.e. I searched on google) seems to suggest that it might be, there are loads of sites that have it available for download.

I've downloaded it, stuck it on the PSP, and it works a treat! Sat and played a wee bit at work, and it's still as good as ever, for a game that's NINETEEN YEARS OLD!!!! (now I feel old!)

So, I've got it, and it works on the PSP using Scummvm. God bless the PSP, god bless Scummvm ! My three hour trip on the train next Friday now seems not so bad!

Abandonware is still technically piracy isnt it?

I can't see Lucasarts abandoning a game when they could still make money from it. Sooner or later they'll package them up and start selling them for the iPhone.

Its not a grey area. Lucasarts would never give up the rights to games considered among the best ever made. A lot of abandonware sites just like to claim things are abandoned so they can distribute them.

What's the legal status of abandonware? I'd have thought a game of this vintage would be a prime candidate.

Abandonware isn't a legal concept, so there's no broad legal status for abandonware. Each title would have to be taken on its own merits.

Part of the problem is that 'abandonware' is used to cover two separate set of circumstances. The first one is where a game is no longer sold or supported. In that case, you'd have to track down a second-hand copy, as unless the company who put it out have expressly waived their rights, it'll still be under copyright. The second one is where copyright ownership for a game is unclear (usually situations where the publisher is no longer trading). Even then, though, the copyright probably still belongs to someone even if you don't know *who*, so, again, tracking down a second-hand copy is the only legal option.

I don't believe Lucasarts have ever 'abandoned' any of their past games. Even if they don't sell the games at the moment, they'll still want to keep ahold of their copyrights and trademarks in case they want to use the characters again later!

Indeed, truly abandoned games are probably less common now than, say, ten years ago, thanks to the fact that Xbox Live, Wii Virtual Console, and mobile phones, etc. now give game companies a viable way of getting more money for old rope.

LeftHandedGuitarist

F5 is the standard menu key for all ScummVM games.
Full screen mode is set in the ScummVM options, or you can hit Alt-Enter.

"Beneath a Steel Sky", "Flight of the Amazon Queen" and "It came from the desert" as free downloads ?

Holy crap, glad I popped in here.

As for Lucasarts given that they've just stuck the old "Fate of Atlantis" game on the new Wii Indy release I doubt they'd allow the Monkey Island games to be abandonware.

I just wish they'd do something with them other than let them wither away, how hard would it be to stick them on Steam or even just offer a similar service for the old classics.

I'd pay some cash to be able to download the old adventure games and even some X-wing/Tie Figher loving.

A few years ago, they actually re-released some of the classics as proper Windows games. I bought a boxset with Full Throttle, Sam & Max, The Dig and Grim Fandango (although that was already Windows) in it. I wish they kept up the trend and released the rest of them.

If LA were to release a disk with just the images of all their Scumm games along with a licence to use with any emulator you have, they'd sell it by the bucket load. It would cost almost nothing to produce and make them millions.

I posted a thread about a site called Good Old Games (http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/) a while back where you can download Beneath A Steel Sky and Lure Of The Temptress for free. You have to pay for others like Simon The Sorcerer etc. No Lucasarts ones though :(

I have simon the sorceror!!

I downloaded scumm and lure of the temptress and then could not be bothered, pc gaming just doesn't appeal - i want it on the DS (and normally, no mucking around with carts). They are so missing a trick with not releasing games on the DS.

cj - a DS flashcart is really easy to use, and you can do SO much with it that's not piracy related - I'm running a SNES emulator on mine and it's awesome - never mind the fact that you can get most of the games for the GBA... :)

Speccy emulator is good too, Manic Miner on the way to work is just too much fun!

Found a huge forum there on the site, appears we are not alone, many people want them re-released, on the Wii or DS or many platforms but no interest. shame :( its a totally cheap money maker. as clearly they benefit not one cent if i buy a 2nd hand copy of Monkey island and use scumm.

Even downloading via steam was mentioned or making their games Windows/vista compatable (think they did this for a few) but no interest.

I jialborke mine just for ScummVM and it was a piece of ****. Download the software, plug in iPod Touch to computer follow instructions (About 3 button combinations on the touch) and bob is your uncle. Use Cydia to get ScummVM and you are away (aside from getting the files onto the touch but if you google scummvm ipod touch you'll find everything you need). Mine is a 1st Gen, 2nd gen may be harder to sort out.

Managed to dig out my FLOPPY DISK VGA copy of Monkey Island 1 and it still bloody worked!!! Can't believe it. Stuck it on SCUMMVM on my Ipod Touch and it works like a dream!
Was there a difference between the CD version and the Floppy version I wonder?

LeftHandedGuitarist
06-02-2009, 09:28
CD version had a more modern inventory system in line with later LucasArts' games, and there was some proper CD audio as opposed to MIDI.

bumfrog
06-02-2009, 09:40
i'm guessing the reason lucasarts aren't releasing it because of the support issues as they won't work on modern os's without scummvm. Unless they actually bought ScummVm, then it's just not worth their time.

camaj
06-02-2009, 19:21
They could release it and not support it, although I think they should just make a DS/Wii version, perhaps on WiiWare. I think there might be complex issues to do with licensing, perhaps they'd have to pay royalties to the staff which would make it hard to profit from unless there's a high price tag.
