Mine was in 1991 the film 'What About Bob'. Can any one beat that
Blimey! I thought I was bad only going once or twice a year. Problem is if I take the family (2+2) it costs a lot more than buying the DVD and I generally find the quality of sound and picture in the cinema very disappointing compared to a home system.
can't beat that but since 1998 i've only seen Scream 2, Star Wars TPM and Lord of the Rings at the pictures.
If idiots turned their mobiles off, i would probably go more.

I also saw Monsters Inc on saturday and this was the first time I'd been to a cinema in over a year. I used to go two or three times a week and literally saw everything that came out over a ten year period. I was disappointed by Monsters Inc but also by poor projection - noisy audience - and a general feeling that going to a cinema was a reason to eat as much food/drink as possible during the film. OK - it is essentially a kids film but actually watching the film seemed secondary to most people.
DVD has altered the way I watch films forever - I have no desire to repeat this cinematic experience again in a mainstream cinema.
I took my parents to see the English Patient when it was first released at the local mutliplex.
Anyway my mother is an ice cream nut and as we passed the Haagen Daz (sp?) concession I asked her if she wanted anything. She replied no, unusual but I thought no more about it.
Anyway we watched the film and on the way out my mother looked across to the stand and so 'Oh they're closed'. When I asked why she hadn't had one when we first went in she said that she was waiting for the interval.
It turns out the last time they went to a cinema was 1977.
Since then they have turned into regular visitors.

I think it depends where you go. I went to see LOTR at the Odeon Leicester Square between Xmas and New Year. We were dead centre of the first row of the circle (with probably the best sight lines in the place), projection was perfect. Sound levels great and a HUGE screen. I don't know how much I would have to spend to recreate the experience but a heck of a lot more than my current system.

Last time? That would be The Lord of the Rings on Boxing Day 2001. A family outing of sorts.
I went to see LotR last month, before that the last film I'd seen was MI:2. The screen was too bright, part of the picture was being practically being projected onto the ceiling and the sound setup was pretty much deafening and lacked any subtlety (and practically no surrounds). And the seating's never going to be as comfortable as my sofas. ;) Can't see me going back very often.
Don't go that often but been twice recently. LOTR and Monsters Inc. - Have to agree that the cinematic experience is not what it used to be. However, Monsters Inc. was one of those preview showings. Only a few people there and the sound/picture were quite good. Have to agree about the food thing though - most people treat it like a fast-food restaurant experience that happens to be showing a movie :(
Fairly frequent-ish visitor.
December 27th - LoTR.

Couple of weeks ago to see Vanilla Sky - wish I hadn't bothered as well.

All the time really, usually about 2-3 times a month with my mates.......unless there is a load of cack on.
Saw Vanilla Sky last Wednesday, then we went to see LOTR for the 2nd time on Sunday, but all 4 showings were sold out, so we watched Shallow Hal instead......which wasn't too bad really.

I try to go once a week, family commitments notwithstanding. I agree with all the above regarding popcorn and other eating noises - I guess for some the idea of popcorn is welded to the idea of cinema.
Much as I love my DVDs, they cannot replace the true cinematic experience - not only the size of the screen and the (hopefully) better sound, but the experience of responding to a film in company with other people. I remember seeing Meet the parents in the States and finding that the audience's spontaneous reaction and laughter to the film greatly added to the overall enjoyment.
My only gripe is that too often films seem to be out of focus - Monsters Inc was a little fuzzy when I caught a preview at our local UGC last week - I know it'll be a lot clearer when I get the DVD! Previous to that I saw Disney's Atlantis there and it was actually out of focus for the first five minutes! Luckily they fixed it before I got out of my seat to complain.
Other than that, I avoid the local multiplexes as much as I can and see films at our local art house cinema (The Belmont).
Lord of the Rings last week. I used to go 3 or 4 times a month but have grwon increasingly annoyed at the antics of the cinema going public so don't go anywhere near as much as I'd like.

Shallow Hal, November last year. It was a late show so only had 4 other people in. A very pleasant experience and not what i'm used to. Noise, talking, mobile phones etc.
I have no idea when the next trip will be though.

PS - whats with this '...The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later...' lark guys?!?! - Upgrade or whatever - Anyone else noticing the frequent server problems here?
Mulholland Drive on Saturday night at UGC Broad Street Birmingham (on my own! :() - loved it, by the way. I agree, you can't beat watching a film at the cinema (in principle). Unfortunately, the cinema is becoming increasingly synonymous with inconsiderate people, uninterested staff, poorly-projected films and deafening sound.
I don't see DVD as an alternative to going to the cinema and I'm sure I'll continue to go (on average about once-a-week) but I do agree it's not always an enjoyable experience. I suppose it's like going to football though - the more popular it becomes, the more idiots you have to put up with.

Well said !
It seems everyone is far too eager to praise his films at the moment. I saw Jerry MacGuire and loathed it's syrupy sweetness. Really didn't care about any of the characters.
Saw Almost Famous and honestly think that it's one of the most overrated films I've ever seen. The only decent character was Frances MacDormand's (sp ?) whereas all the others were caught up in terrible, terrible cliches and co-incidences. Again, I couldn't care less what happened to the characters.
I was horrified to see that he was remaking 'Abre los Ojos', not seen it yet and will probably wait for it to hit TV, but I was very concerned that the overall sugar sweetness of the previous films I've seen by him would kill what the original had going for it. However the pics I've seen of Diaz in it may make it worthwhile !!! ;)

I go 2-3 times a week! The local UGC gives me unlimited access for £9.99 a month, and it's only 3 stops away on the DLR.
Got a preview of something tomorrow night and Ocean's 11 on Thursday.

I try to go to the cinema at least once a week. I am lucky to have two very good cinema’s near where I live, one being THX approved so I usually do not have a problem with sound or immage. Granted it is annoying when the person behind you descides to give a running commentary but having an audience that really enjoys the movie can sometimes cause you to enjoy the movie more than you would have alone. However the reason that I most want to go to the cinema is to see a movie now, not wait half a year before it shows up on DVD. If the movie is good enough then I watch it again when it comes out on DVD.

I usually go about twice a week, when I can't be arsed with uni :)
Went to see Amelie and Training Day last week and wasn't that impressed with either.

Saturday just gone, to see Lord of the Rings. Awesome film!!!
The Others on Halloween 2001 was the last time - just can't be bothered as much now that I have my DVD system. Might go and see Ocean's 11 with my cousin - only because my cousin has a couple of free tickets for it!! :D
Last time was when Jurassic Park 2 came out, around 1997.
July '82 - The film was called 'Missing' or something like that. Starred Jack Lemon, awful film, haven't been back since.

Last two, LOTR and Planet Of The Apes... Only two I saw in 2001. :( In both 99 and 2000 though I used to go nearly every weekend.
Last time was last weekend to Monsters Inc.
I usually find that I have far fewer problems with people talking and phones going off at the cinema than I do at home.
I got about 3 times a week :D But only cos I work there and get in free :)

I love the cinema, go about 6 times a month.

when everything is right, then no home cinema can beat the real thing -- unless of course you're a millionaire, and even then i bet you don't have your own lobby, a box office, and a popcorn counter, then again you may be ridiculously rich, and you probably even have 7 other screens running different films????
going just a bit off track now...
i've had the fortune of having a cinema absolutely to myself on about 7 occasions, and it's the absolute best!!! last time i went was Sunday, but the last time i went and didn't have reason to complain about was in November, when i was all alone watching Atlantis... and considering i go quite often to the cinema (sometimes 2-3 times a week, new release dependent), it just goes to show why i understand why people would avoid the cinema altogether.
Also nothing beats watching a film where virtually everyone is in the same mood, that happened last with Nutty Proffesor, virtually the whole cinema liked it, and it's the same effect as a laugh track, but much huger and in surround sound, i literally nearly ****** myself during that dinner scene, no really i couldn't control myself!!!! :p

this weekend , saw black hawk down. it was full of noisey teenage BLANK. all films should be made 18's!!!
when i was a student used to go every week. when the local virgin/ugc used to do these 4 weeks passes a bunch of us would watch everything on.
but rescently the experience has degraded, dvd has ruined me for ejoying the picture quality (unless i'm in birmingham which have thx approval).
2 hours ago. Monsters Inc at the Warner Village cinema at the Lowry on Salford Quays. Great film, ***** cinema - in fact, the worst I've been to in years. Pricey, outrageously expensive food, horribly automated, astonishingly poor seats.
(Thank heavens for the UCI Filmworks - good prices, great seats, cheap food deals and they show all your favourite, ahem, arty releases.)
last film i saw was LAST ORDERS,it was very good.
last film my dad saw at the cinema was STAR WARS !
I suffer from anxiety and used to walk out of the cinema after just a few minutes, so DVD is a real Godsend to me.
Last movie I saw at the pictures was Gladiator, about 2 years ago I think.

Took my dad to see Lord of the Rings last sunday - he's a big fan of the books .. read 'em when they first came out.
I asked him the last time he went to the cinema and he said it was when he took me to see Star Wars in '77! I was only ten!
He was well impressed with LOTR but added that it was all a bit loud :D

The last film I saw was From Hell on Friday Though I really enjoyed it I'm actually not a fan of the cinema and always feel I can get 'sucked in' a movie better at home..of course having DTS, DD 5.1, comfortable seating and a projector with 72" screen helps..:D
Last itme I went to the cinema was last night to see From Hell.
My local cinema is actually very good. So far there has been no real problems with noisy idiots. Last night was the first time. During the adverts a couple behind us were talking very loudly. No real problems, as who cares about the ads? However they kept on chatting through the trailers, which is annoying but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. When the film started it seemed to stop but within minutes they were providing everybody with a running commentary. So I very politely asked them to shut it and to my suprise they did. Didn't hear a peep from them after that. Very proud of myself. ;)

Just in the new year to see LOTR.
Not been since cos there's not been many "Cinematic" films recently that i've been interested in. By "Cinematic" I mean films that really need to be seen on a big screen with a big sound system e.g. LOTR, Gladiator and other blockbusters. Most other things I tend to watch on DVD unless I am really keen to see it asap. Vanilla Sky for example I would wait to see on DVD as I can rent it from blockbusters for 3.50 or from the library for 1.80.
I'm undecided about Monsters Inc. Tempted to go watch it at the cinema but not sure....

Funny a similar thing happened when I saw From Hell. Instead of a running commentary I had a girl behind me who kept on making excited comments. e.g. It showed a prostitute after Jack the Ripper had had his way with her. Girl behind me: "Look no nose!". Abberline gets beaten up in an alley way, girl behind me: "Ooh is he dead? " etc.

I went to see Monsters Inc this afternoon, loved it I did have to get them to fix the sound though as the voice track was almost inaudible when I walked in towards the end of the adverts. I'm always the one who goes and tells the ushers when the picture or the sound is screwed up, no one else seems to give a toss. I've been to packed showings of 2.35:1 ratio films which were being screened with the picture scrunched up into 1.85:1 and everyone else just sits there, with maybe the occasional comment like "Ooh, the picture's a bit funny".
