Recently order a couple of 2 disc dvds from Amazon.com (using a voucher). The total cost is about £34 but I ticked the gift box.

What are the chances of getting hit by customs as I know they like to ship in LARGE boxes.

I'm just wondering whether it's worth getting them shipped separately and paying an extra £3 or so to avoid our friends at customs.

Only when I've got a voucher which in this case made them cheaper than elsewhere, including my usual supplier absound.ca.

Customs will ignore the GIFT box as it only applies to personal shipments, e.g. friend in the USA sends you the discs. If customs get their hands on the order they'll charge VAT/import duty on the whole amount including P&P.

These days all it takes is a box saying Amazon on, even if its not from them, and you're guaranteed a customs charge  Well that happened to me :D

I had 2 discs last week, with AMAZON.COM all over the box and no customs charges.

I think Customs are chasing bigger fish than us.

My last few orders from Amazon were:

Sopranos season 1 - $69

Ab Fab - $69

Akira - $35

I didn't get hit for customs duty on any of them. I ticked the gift box so that there would not be a value printed on the outside of the box. Dunno if it made a difference but I do it automatically.

Have Amazon.com stopped printing the order value on the outside of their boxes then? In my experience they have to put a customs declaration sticker on the outside regardless of whether the order is a gift or not.

If they've changed, I might be prepared to try ordering something from them again.
