View Full Version : Setup for £900?
Right, i know every now and then i put in a post asking what is the best setup i can get for xxx amount of money, and im now doign it again. At the moment i have a Pioneer 535 dvd player and im borrowing a mates Digitheatre (not dts). As a student im getting a house in september and am going to rent a nice telly.
Now i need the setup to go with it, what can i get for £900 and i want 6 speakers a Sub, and an amp, i could maybe stretch to £1000 as a very maximum which must include wires, im going for an August buy so if there are some new models out soon, please tell.
Also, is my player gonna be good enough or do i need a new one or will it suffice till christmas?
**Nearly forgot, i want 6:1 ES EX DTS etc.all the future formats**
Go for the Kef eggs at around £600-650 (search the site for a link to those prices).
Then any decent Marantz/Denon new model with 6.1 shoud be in your budget.
The eggs are a speaker package i presume, im a bit wary of them, dont u get more for your money if you buy the speakers seperatly (pairs) and also, isnt that spending a lot on the speakers and not much on the amp?
I was thinking of the sony STRDB1070 or the Denon 3802/2802, i cant tell the diff with the denon`s.....
any more advice?
Nah, the balance is about right.
Go and demo the Kef's in a specialist with your choice of amp.
You could get other speakers, depends how bit you want them. The Tannox MXAV pack is particularly good and reasonably priced (£450??).
The Denon is better than the Sony IMO.
The Kef's are superb. I run mine with a Yamaha DSP-AX620.
You won't be disappointed.

How about:
Mission Cinema M72 (5 speaker package) - £400
Mission 77DS - for the other rear channel - £100
+
Marantz SR5200 - £330
OR
Marantz SR6200 - £400
Doesn't leave much for stands for the 2 front speakers + all necessary cables. But you wouldn't need a sub to start with anyway as the front pair are full range.
If you do want a sub though Richer Sounds do a Paradigm one for £150. Or spend a bit more and get the MJ Acoustics Pro 50.
Is the tannoy 6 speakers and a sub?

That comprises:
2 fronts
1 centre
3 rear
No sub, but you wouldn't need one as the front speakers are full range and thus generate sufficient bass.
BUT, you could add a sub if you wanted.
Or forget the other rear speaker and just put that £100 towards a sub.
Are you confused yet?
Don't forget Richers are still doing the Mission 77 speaker
package for £400!

If you add a PDR-10 sub for £150 (may not add that much
to these speakers but it'll add some punch :D )
Leaving £300-£350 for the best amp you can think of ;]
tbh I'd be tempted to dump the sub and put more money
into the Amp....
Depends if this is a one off spend for the rest of your life, or
if you're going to add stuff over the next couple of years (Oh
the addiction ;) )

If you post the same question in six months time, you may get more relevant advice.
Too much can change in six months - what may be the latest top price wonder product now, could be the bargain offer of the year come August. Several manufacturers will be releasing new kit this year, and if nothing else, that tends to drive the price of their current range down.
If you aren't in a position to buy till August, I wouldn't even think about it again until July-ish.
