View Full Version : Sony 725: Sound level decreases in action scenes
I have a Sony 725 multiregion player connected to the TV via the SCART cable and to my Hi-Fi amp using L+R audio channels.
I have noticed that whilst watching some films that when there is an action scene, that the sound seems to automatically decrease in level. The audio returns to 'normal' level after the action has passed.
The player is running in standard out of the box mode, without me having played with any settings.
Do I need to alter any audio settings to overcome this problem. One day I'll move to a full dolby set-up but at the moment this isnt feasible.
Any comments on how to stop the audio decreasing would be most welcome.
Thanks.

Its just a thought but have you checked in your dvd player settings whether there is a night mode option, this may be automatically reducing volume when an increase is detected. just a shot in the dark before someone comes up with a technical explanation.

Howard, don't bother looking for hidden settings on your Sony. I was told by a forum member who works in the sound industry that this is a standard 'feature' of multichannel sound downmixed to stereo.
I've been listening to my Toshiba 2109 in stereo since I got it in Oct '99 and it was a big disappointment when I noticed the effect for the first time - especially as it had never happened with my old nicam VCR. It seems (reasonably) that the manufacturers have made the assumption that anyone listening to their DVD players in stereo via a scart or stereo L/R are using their TV sound to do so and take steps to avoid destroying puny TV speakers with the huge dynamic range that digital sound is capable of, or at least the horrible distortion you'd get.
The only solution is an upgrade to 5.1 digital sound. Pain, isn't it...?
Thanks for the replies.
It's a pain, but I'll persevere for a little longer and then splash out for a full DTS audio system.

I have a 725 and setting the (AUDIO ATT) in the setup menu to off, should solve the problem.
