hey folks

my surrounds are currently in front of me as there is no way due to the design of my room to have them behind or to the side of me unless I put them on brackets above doors....will doing so be an improvement on my already flawed set up or am I best leaving it the way it is...I need a quick reply as I'm about to go to b&q for brackets (well argos)

Its nice to see that someone else has a less than perfect setup, most of these guys will probably tell you to move house rather than sacrifice your sound quality ;)

For my money you've got to nip out and get those stands, experiment with different angles, up, down, bouncing off the back wall etc

I know its crap with some of the room shapes we have to work around, its just a case of trying to get the best from a bad job.

Its got to be worth the effort though, so off to B&Q or Argos

how far in front are they? why not just sit in front of em for a while just to test how they sound behind you?

They're about 2 feet in front of me

here's a quick diagram (not to scale) of what I'm putting up with.......the black boxes are where the speakers currently are, and no I can't move furniture....there thick black lines are doors and there's another one on the \ in the top right corner

Without actually being in your room and experimenting (like you are already doing), it's impossible to say what setup will sound best in your room, whilst still being acceptable from a general living point of view.

If they are in front of you, you could try angling them quite severely, aiming them at the rear wall, each one aimed at a spot about 1/4 to 1/3 along the back wall from it's adjacent corner. The theory is that you can bounce the sound off the back wall - it's supposed to work quite well. (or at least that's what I've read, as I've never actually tried it myself).

Another option would be to buy some small 8 ohm speakers, and put these on the back wall, in about the same position as stated above. Look to get ones at the sensitivity or maybe 1dB higher than your current units. Then run the two pairs in parallel - the original ones angled only slightly rearwards, and the additional ones firing directly out from the back wall (if they are close to you seating position, you may also need to angle them down as well).
You could try a pairof Eltax bipoles from Richers for about £80 too, or something like the WHARFEDALE WH2 CENTRE+2 REARS from QED for the same price (just don't use the centre, or use it for something else).

Just a thought, have you tried the following.

Move the TV to the centre of the top wall giving a symetrical front sound stage
Move the lower sofa up and left so that it is front of the rear left speaker.

Move the table to where the sofa was (possibly get a smaller table if it needs to be infront of the TV for remotes etc.

With the exception of the right rear this would give a reasonably symetrical setup. You could move the right rear to a stand behind the sofa.

I have a similar setup.

The only place to sit is against a rear wall (bedroom). There is door on the right. I have had to put 601 speakers in front of me (about 2 feet) and angle them towards me. I like the speakers to point either side of my head.

It is not perfect but adequate under the circumstances.

Can't you swap the TV with the sofa at the bottom?
