View Full Version : Lie To Me - Season 1 US Pace (Spoilers)
The new Tim Roth led series started last night.
It's interesting but nothing to shout about.
At least Roth gets to use an English accent for the show anyway.
"Lie to me" treads a similar path as "The Mentalist" but it feels like a Discovery channel drama at times as it focuses a lot on Roth's talent for picking up body language.
There's a Wire regular in the first episode for fans of the show and a decent use of an Aqualung track as the episode draws to a close.
I'll give it a watch again next week but I wouldn't care if I missed it really.
Based on Dr Paul Ekman's (http://www.paulekman.com/) work.
He's the liars Allison Dubois!
a decent use of an Aqualung track as the episode draws to a close.
It was better when Brothers and Sisters used it.
Decent first episode. Willing to give it a few episodes just to see if it hooks me. Also nice to see that Kelli Williams from The Practice is still getting work.
For people in the UK SKY (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a144020/sky1-acquires-lie-to-me.html) have acquired this :)

I loved this, and the wife did too !! cant help wondering that every person I meet from now on will be analyzed for expressions :)
here's hoping his English accent isn't as abysmal as his Amercian one
Enjoyed this a lot. The writing was good, acting was solid & the body language facts were fascinating. My only gripe was the two storylines which were just standard US network tv fodder. I also worry that the interesting facts could dry up & get repetitive quickly, but for now this comfortably slots onto my Watch-list. Certainly more entertaining than the similar The Mentalist.

Just watched the first episode of this. Enjoyable, if standard TV fare. Cal Lightman could develop into an interesting character - going to stick with it.
It alternates between good to average so far. It so desperately wants to be like House, but doesn't come close. Still much better than the likes of The Mentalist & Castle.
Gotta disagree there. The Mentalist is far superior to this, in fact I'd say this is trying to copy The Mentalist more than it's copying House. It's better than Castle though, but that's only had two episodes so far.

I generally dont mind this, but it's nowhere near as good as the mentalist.
The bloke who works with Lightman - what's happened to his extreme honesty thing?

Have watched a few episodes of this now and has really grown on me, good mixture of story lines, interchanging with real-life people (pictures of Bill Clinton etc) Good production from the 24 team.
What happened with the last episode completely ignoring the ex-wife mini-cliffhanger at the end of the previous episode?

This week's episode was by far the best one yet. Starting to really enjoy this now.

Yup, definitely raised its game this week. Nice addition to the cast too.

They seem to have stopped showing the snippets of celebs using the same body language to show the real life examples. Ignoring that, great show!

He's done alright for himself since The Happy Mondays and Black Grape then.
Really enjoying this , just watched the 2nd episode on Sky , gonna stick with it , i think it oozes quality :)
Excellent season two opener, the multiple-personality storyline was very well done.
Yes, very good start to the season. I don't care if Erica Christiansen (sp?) is a Scientologist, she's hot. Tim Roth continues to be good too.

Yeah I thought it was a good start too. People complained that the first season was all "over the top" with facial ticks that were immediately explained. Personally I didn't actually mind that, the characters were interesting enough for me not to notice. But this episode seemed to have none of that (maybe a little with the Judge, but it wasn't over done). Looks like they are spreading out to more general psychology, which is a great direction to take the show.
Watched Season 2 Ep 2 last night (simply because someone mentioned the Roman Polanski thing, which was a clever edit).
I've not seen this before and I won't be again because it's frankly rubbish. The script is all over the place (A and B plotlines that have no reason being in the same episode), the dialogue so "on the nose" that it made my eyes roll and well, the characters are completely awful especially Tim Roth's. Such a thoroughly annoying and unlikeable lead (not that you need a traditionally "likeable" lead, see 'House', but it helps to have some empathy). From his gimpy walk to his turny head tick, urgh just get off my screen and stop pummelling every scene like a randy bulldog!

Hang on, so you're only willing to give this one episode, but you watched at least two of that BBC3 secretary programme?
Although it hasn't got an arc as such, you really need to watch the pilot of this to get any kind of handle on the characters. Jumping in for a random episode for a two second photo of Polanski isn't giving it much of a chance.

Good to see the actor who played the crazy Russian fella in Life getting work. Even if it was just villain of the week.

I take it you don't watch much US TV then, Garret Dillahunt's been one of the most ubiquitous character actors of the last 5 years or so!

I'd say I watch a fair bit of TV, but looking on IMDB the only thing I watch that he's been in would be CSI(Which was only 3 weeks ago, but I didn't recognize him?).

He's very good at playing sleazy individuals. I'd say most people recognise him from Deadwood, E.R, No Country for Old Men, and the recent Last House on the Left remake.

Weird episode today. Not that good. The little flash up picture of Milli Vanili for "expression comparison" made me laugh. Unfortunately the dramatic moment that preceded it meant that it wasn't suppose to be funny... so it's a negative. :(

Fox have ordered the back 9 of S2 but not announced when they'd be shown. Next weeks will be the last broadcast for a while.
Got to say I'm still loving the show. For me, it's great to see Tim Roth in something again and I'm really enjoying the change in style in Season 2. I was pretty worried the FBI thing towards the end of the first season would take over, but so far it's just been an option rather than the main plot.

Why no S3? Cos Summer isn't when networks make any money from ads so why broadcast a new show when they wont recoup there costs unless they think they have better options. That's my guess anyway.

Yes, read that last week & thought that would be the final nail in the show's coffin, but I guess not....
Why would it be a good thing if he left?
I would say that he's given a more diverse level of plots than it looked likely to have with the FBI assistance group idea that was pretty much implied before he came in.

DrVenkman
13-05-2010, 18:03
Ryan is leaving because he has a show he's getting off the ground with Fox. He only really did the show as a favour and wanted to show the writers how to tell better stories. It's not by accident that the show took a leap in quality when he got on board. Here's hoping that we get more of what Season 2 has been offering and less of what Season 1 offered.

+1. First of all I thought it was crappy syncing and that my box had taken a hit, then I thought "Didn't she just say this?", then it dawned what was happening. Was what she said of any relevance?
The music was ok in that part of the programme, so figured it was correct in the context of the scene.

just caught up with last 2 and yes, also had the sound loop. It could have been deliberate but sounded very strange if meant as some sort of emphasis.

I've kinda gone off this now. S1 was good, but S2 seems to have given up explaining some of the science and just has Lightman as a human lie detector without explaining his methods.
Not sure I'll bother with S3.

Third season of this is just awful so far. Characters have all been slightly off and the stories are very poor. Science has completely vanished and replaced by shouting.
Hit & miss for me this season. I didn't really enjoy ep.3 but this week's with the gorgeous Tricia Helfer I thought was excellent. Roth's portrayal of Lightman gets more bizarre with every episode & he seems to be effecting the other actors around him. I'm not disliking the way he acts, it's certainly unique for a US show.

Dont know what the recent viewing figures have been for this, but it just seems to be getting worse quality wise. Roth's acting is getting more bizarre and the story lines random. The science bit was always the interesting part but thats getting less and less.
Lack of recent posts isnt a good sign either
i don't know if it is me, but i think that roth's character seems to act like a dick now all the time now. The writing of the show has definately gone down since shawn ryan left.
Agree with Alistair that they need to get back to more science as oppose to character development.

It really is dreadful, i can barely get through an episode nowadays. This weeks mental home storyline was like something from scrubs.
I actually wondered whether Roth had got bored with the grind of network TV and was just trying to sabotage the show with his performance (not sure how many years he's contracted for).
