As a former addict, I could see myself spending quite a bit of time online playing that. Especially (and only) if you don't need to keep purchasing boosters.

There's better videos on IGN & the interface looks very slick.

They get the gameplay right, this will be Gaming-Cocaine.

If you have to buy the cards I’m steering well clear, I spent a fortune on the PC version as they cleverly released a new set every few months which were more powerful than the previous set meaning if you wanted to compete and win you had to keep paying.

In the end I sold my account on ebay for a lot of money as I could see it becoming a problem, it’s like virtual crack. Very good game though...

ChrisHunt

Also spent lots of money on the PC version in the past. This will be great if you don't need to buy new cards (even better if you are rewarded cards for winning or something similar)

I was old school. I spent lots of money on the paper cards in the 90ies. They are still sitting in my attic, waiting for my kids to play with me.

Confirmed that this is released on June 17th. No details on price yet but it's been confirmed that there will be no extra card DLC. The game contains 8 unique decks & a total of 280 different cards, all unlockable through the game via progressing through the single-player campaign & puzzle challenges and via various multi-player/co-op games.

Definite must-have for me.

No details on price yet but it's been confirmed that there will be no extra card DLC.

From the FAQ:

Q. Will there be expansions or additional decks released for additional game play?

A. We have not currently announced any expansions for Duels of the Planeswalkers, however the game is extremely flexible and we are considering additional content.

This along with the "twitch" timed gameplay they talk about has put me off the game to a certain extent. :(

TonyG
05-06-2009, 06:27
The timed gameplay is only for multiplayer from what i've read, so I don't mind that.

According to this FAQ (http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=76425) there will be expansions

TonyG
16-06-2009, 10:51
No surprise really that there will be expansions, but the main thing is the actual game is limited to a finite number of cards, all of which can be unlocked through playing the game. I assume they will probably copy EA & sell unlock DLC at a later date, for those too lazy to play through the game.

MrSpeed
16-06-2009, 11:38
Having never played it before, is it an easy game to pick up? I imagine there are specific strategies to be learnt?

Adge
16-06-2009, 11:46
It is a brilliant game, very easy to pick up but also extremely deep. I used to play a lot, but the cost of keeping up with the competivie game became too much and I stopped the whole thing as it became close to addication!!

jagox
16-06-2009, 11:53
From what I've seen in screenies and vids it looks like they are only using cards from the "Core" set - which is a good thing. Should be easy enough to learn for new players. I just worry what will happen to a new player trying to break into it when we're on expansion 13

TonyG
16-06-2009, 11:57
Yeah, the basics are very simple to learn but as you gain more & more cards, the strategy increases exponentially, but still remains incredibly addictive.

TonyG
17-06-2009, 12:45
Is that for both single-player & multiplayer?

I can understand why they'd restrict you with regard to single-player as it's just a series of challenges which would be too easy if you could create custom decks, but to restrict multiplayer is a BAD idea. :|

JohnMac
17-06-2009, 12:51
I've got no idea what this game is except it is some sort of card game. I was just checking to see if new XBLA games were on the cards today or are they just gathering themselves. ;)

Wendelius
17-06-2009, 13:00
I have no idea what that means :?:

Simply that real life Magic (being a collectible card game) is based on your building a collection of cards (by buying lots of pack of cards known as "boosters") and selecting a subset of them to make a coherent (hopefully) deck. Those are the cards you will duel and hope to win with.

The XBLA game seems to differ in 2 ways:

- You don't need to buy boosters to build your deck. All the cards are in the game, ready to be unlocked.
- Apparently, how much you can customise your deck is somewhat limited. How exactly, I don't know. But to Magic players, that part is bound to feel strange as the game is mainly about tweaking the cards you play with to get the best and most consistent results and outwitting your opponent.

Just had my first duel in the demo and it seems OK. Very sparkly.. crushed his goblin deck with a couple of trampling wurms!! :D :dork:

Once you've seen all the popup hints and turned them off I should imagine the game will play a lot sleeker and not so stop/start.

However, I've just tried to Giant Growth one of my oppo's creatures and it wouldn't let me!! What's all that about..? :nono:

The deck customisation seems utter pants - unless I'm missing something - you can't take cards out only add the unlocked cards to the existing deck!! I want a sixty card deck without these crappy elephants, thanks..

Also seems a bit easy - completed the green campaign pretty much first go, but to be fair it does say it'll be harder next time round!! Will take yonks to do it multiple times with each deck!!

One concern I have: Does the game auto-add land when you add in more cards? If not, don't add more than a couple of the cards you unlock in your deck! Otherwise, you have more and more critters and spells and a lower ratio of land against them. Your deck gets seriously slower and you will lose more games if you have, for example, 17 lands in a 70 cards deck versus 17 lands in the original 60 cards deck.

Also seems a bit easy - completed the green campaign pretty much first go, but to be fair it does say it'll be harder next time round!! Will take yonks to do it multiple times with each deck!!

What the game engine does is put the cards which are considered tricky to handle (for the opponent, not the engine) at the bottom of the deck on easy difficulty settings. So your opponent is very unlikely to get to draw some of the really nasty cards, which makes the game much easier.

On your next play through, those cards might come on soon in the game and the AI will not suffer than handicap.

How was the opponent A.I.?Play at your own pace. The only timer is the small window where you can play instants.

Haven't seen the AI make any obvious mistakes.

I initially went to customise the deck looking for a way to take land out, let alone it put more in! I always have it coming out of my ass with the green deck..

It's good fun (and good value imo) just a bit disappointed with the lack of deck building options.. :dork:

EDIT - challenges are not much of a challenge!! :dork:

I just tested it, and it does. With no cards added, my deck was 60. With two cards added, my deck was 64! So it adds land at a high ratio.

I assume some people have it (perhaps the devs). I think there is a game with fame / with the devs typ event coming up so will probably spread from that.

Nope. There was a MtG PC game a zillion years ago which I played to death, I believe Microprose published it?

I understand that there was a patch for this today. No word yet what it fixes. Looking at the Xbox forums, apparently there is lots of little bugs, yet to encounter any myself.

Been playing this non-stop since I got it. Very addictive but seems a serious amount of luck involved. Having a good starting hand makes all the difference.

Having never played the paper game I am very impressed. Seems somewhat incomplete though. There's hardly any challenges and the lack of deck customizations seems to be a strange one. With the amount of cards and rules available from the paper version I would have rather paid 1200 points and got an expanded game with more decks and a more varied single player.
