So, I've heard a lot about Shiri. From the rather glowing review on DVDTimes, to the even more glowing review on Bulletsnbabes.

Was doing a quick search and found this.

Filmthreat.com (http://www.filmthreat.com/Reviews.asp?File=ReviewsOne.inc&Id=2491)

Anyone else watched the film and been as unimpressed as this guy?

(I'm still gonna get it on R1 though, too many good reports not to)

hi, reviewer of Shiri for DVDTimes here.

While I believe everyone should have their own opinion on a film I can't help but believe that this guy has in several instances completely missed the point of the film.

I don't really want to get into certain areas for fear of spoiling the film, but I am sure that many others will back me up when I say the film is NOT an endless action fest, the love story IS integral to the film (and not tacked on as suggested at Filmthreat) and thank god there is no 'cop-buddy movie jokes' or indeed any Arnie style remarks for the sake of humour!!

The reviewer at Filmthreat also seems to be one of the first on the net I have come across who believes films should be censored in light of the Sept11th events...and slamming a films story and the action held within in light of those events when it was made a couple of years before is quite pathetic IMHO.

That's not the only dumbass review (http://u.dailynews.com/film/review/0202/08/MOV05.asp).

The problem with reading American reviews of films is that there always seems to be one or 2 reviewers who totally get the wrong idea about the directors intent & also go into a film wanting to be offended. So they will seemingly look for any remotely offenseive parts & write a damning review on the film, they're not critics, they're morons.
I remember doing the american review rounds for Pleasantville a while back & found one reviewer who was sickened by the apparent "Racist" & "Facist" message the film gives out!

the fact, as someone stated elsewher, which i use nowadays. is not to listen to paid reviewers. most of the times they are out of touch with the general public tastes. te people i believe are your good selves. the public that buy and pay money to watch these films, not people that judge movies on how much free stuff they got.

american reviewers, which there are many, have some really pc party poopers. i'd be scare if the bbfc was handed in their hands.

whilst not watching shiri in any language i can read properly (i was reading this in chinese on a disc my brother bought from china  ), although i wasn't blown away by it, it's a competent thriller that easily puts to shame a large percent of the output of hollywood.
if i can get the korean disc for the right price, i'l get that, but if i can't i'm going for the region 1.

anyone wanna trade the korean version with me?

While I agree that the reviewer got the film completely wrong, the BnB review is also somewhat distorted as well (be it nowhere near as much).
Shiri is not a overly violent film, if your used to HK gunplay films you know what to expect. The BBFC would have no problems passing it uncut.
There are better reviews out there which paint Shiri in a less than positive light.
I myself like it, but find no reason to hold it up as highly as the BnB review (which seems to have snowballed a strong desire for this film & the reason why its gotten popular on its R0 SE release).
There's nothing which makes it stand out from the likes of HKL Purple Storm, It has some serious pacing issues, a tad too long, and for me the action scenes were spoiled by the directors insistance to always use a handheld cam.
Its still a good film, but most will be dissapointed after reading BnB's shining review.

I've always stressed to people that it is not a hard core action film, its advertised as that just for marketing which is obvious, but i still none the less enjoyed it a great deal, it does have characters you give a damn about in it which is why i like it so much and you can feel certain anguish towards the end.

I found Shiri a little lacking myself - I'm a HUGE fan of the ilk, but I thought it suffered from 'Battle Royale Syndrome' - infinate clips of ammo being thrown around with a single impact... not to mention strong start and weak end....

I'd personally rate Full Time Killer a thousand times better...
