The R1, released 25/1/01 is dd5.1 and anamorphic. Don't think any of the others are: http://www.image-entertainment.com/image/ies/control.jsp

The R2 is also 5.1 and anamorphic. DVDTimes review here (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=245&story=2091). the sound and picture are almost perfect. A very nice DVD.

I'd heard the R2 was the only anamorphic version.

Anyway, I can confirm that the R4 definitely <U>isn't</U> anamorphic.

Thanks for that. I was seriously considering getting the R4.

Good thing I saw this first.

I have owned both the R1 and R2 versions of this;

Firstly, the R1 is NOT Anamorphic, DEFINITLY NOT.
It is a 2 sided disc with 4:3 one side and non-anamorphic 2:35:1 the other.
The picture quality is actually slightly better than the R2, but the non-anamorphic print means on my widescreen tv when I zoom it in, it looks worse.
Go for the R2, the best version available.

I'll be going for the R2.

There appear to be two R1 versions of <b>Baraka</b> - the Regular Edition (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00003ETJQ/qid=1013687230/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/104-9941695-9503136) which has the 4:3 and letterbox versions and the Special Collectors Edition (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005M91K/qid=1013687230/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-9941695-9503136) which <i>does</i> appear to be anamorphic. The latter looks identical to the R2.

Thanks for the info Noel.

So it's just a price thing then between R1 and R2.

Cheapest R2 (Play and Under18) is £14.99

Cheapest R1 Special Collector's Edition is £14.15

Given that choice - I'd go for the R2.

Thanks for bringing Baraka to my attention. I was totally unaware of this films existence. After reading the reviews it definitely seems like my kind of film. Should complement my Microcosmos DVD nicely.
Cheers

I have now bought the Anamorphic R1 version of this (as mentioned above).

I can now say easily that this is a better print than the R2 version
(as I have owned both)

:)

Now you mention this after conning me into buying your old R2 :D

Seriously though, how much of an improvement is the R1 over the R2 as the R2 looks great to me on my equipment.

Thanks again, watched it for the first time the other night and just sat there mesmerized by the screen.

Damn good film isn't it?
I had the good fortune to see it at the cinema when it came out.
Blew me away.
The R1 print is a bit lighter, I found the R2 to be a bit dark.
If the R1 is 10/10, I'd score the R2 as 9.5/10.

So don't worry m8, it's not that big a difference.
Don't think about upgrading,
especially at the bargain price you paid!!;)

But for those who want to see it who don't already own it,
I'd say, hand on heart, go for the R1 SE

Cheers!

Like I said I was totally mesmerized by it, I just felt very guilty watching the small chicks scenes and still being captivated by it.

Sorry to bump an old thread etc.

Just watched my R2 again quite some time after initially watching it etc...fantastic subject matter etc..however, i did find that the R2 had some distracting 'motion artifacts' during camera pans etc...just wondering whether the re-mastered R1 had remedied this and is an improvement upon the R2.

Have never really considered opting for HD-DVD in light of the fact that generally the current DVD format offers everything i could want...however, watching features such as this etc make me think otherwise.

Any bit in particular so I can check?

No 'bit' in particular..just generally...camera 'pans' around the snow capped peaks at start, the Bali Tea plantation, the slums/housing projects and ruins etc.

Do you own the R1 CE by chance?

I do and didn't notice any artifacts when I last watched on a 36" screen...

I could double check when I get home, tho.

Much appreciated!...if the R1 CE doesn't have these effects..aliasing(?) etc...i'd be tempted to purchase that and trade the R2 i own.

The R1 CE is completely remastered, according to the box blurb.

I watched the first 30 mins or so and got to those pesky, artifacting mountains: looked lovely to me, no aliasing, shimmer etc. None of the pixelation that the first R1 suffered from...

Lovely. Lovely lovely lovely. Cheapest at Soon, I believe (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.dvdsoon.com/show-title-details.xml^QS^uid=5406^QA^partner_id=10040)
