View Full Version : Wipeout - new show with Richard Hammond (is he really there?)
New show on a Saturday night. Not very good but not the point of this thread. If anyones seen it is Richard Hammond actually there or is it all filmed on bluescreen after?

he just does his bit in a studio
it's like the most watered down version of Takeshis Castle ever, but I couldnt help laugh out loud at some of the collisions with the props
Prime Time Saturday Night TV falls to a new low...
And Richard does his bit with a bluescreen
That 4 red balls section is a bit difficult.
They had this in the US few months ago, 1st show was kind of amusing but went down hill pretty quick watching folks do the same course week after week was just dull
A low ebb for prime time Saturday night on the Beeb but surely a few steps up Hole In The Wall?
Total Wipeout is like a cross between Takeshi's and Ninja Warrior.
Whether Richard Hammond is in Argentina or not, he will really do anything for a pay day!

I laughed really loudly at some of the efforts during the preliminary round..
Formulaic crap lifted immeasurably by painful collisions and nice Hammond asides.

It's no 'Hole in the wall' but i rather enjoyed this.
I preferred it when Paul Daniels was the presenter - I don't remember him using a blue screen ;)

I thought this was quite fun really, I would say harmless but quite a few people got injured:)

Prime Time Saturday Night TV falls to a new low...
Yeah not like the good old days were they'd do this kind of show dressed up as a giant duck.
I enjoyed it and personally I am glad this kind of stuff is back on tv. When I was a kid early evening weekend television was mainly silly knock about fun like this. I'd rather watch people falling over than benign wannabes crying about their dead granny after singing yet another insipid pop song. Sure Total Wipeout is far from amazing but I think that there are a lot of thoroughly miserable people posting here.

It's not that different to the music shows though as the majority of people find the first round featuring the fat and gormless types making an arse of themselves the most entertaining.

I found it dead funny. Mindless chuckles for an hour.
Apparently the show is filmed in Argentina at a disused water park outside Buenos Aires. That would explain the blue screen. Still I found it hilarious especially seeing how people interface with the four red spheres!
Watched the first one last week and found it OK. Richard Hammond really isn't an interesting presenter, is he? :oh-hum:

No it's completely different. One is people attempting a physical assault course and often falling over and one is people singing in a room. Besides the idiots singing makes up only the very start of the series and I pointed out it was the more serious elements that I don't like.
I'm sure the people are still being picked in the same way though.
Stick a couple through each week that have no chance but will have the public laughing at (not with ) them because they're so ****.

Sure there are some totally hopeless people on there but even the most athletic people get battered in some way or another so you really don't have a point.
I do.
The chav woman in the first week and the guy that worked in the pub this week were obviously chosen for laughs.

At least the crap people get a nice trip to Argentina out of it.
I do.

Fair enough but I'm still not sure what point you are making. Not once have I said that I like this show because I specifically want to laugh at idiots so I'm don't know why you made the comparison between this and the show I said hated.

thought this was OK the first week (not a patch on Takeshi's Castle or others of the same ilk) but when the 2nd episode was just more of the same (the same courses and final etc) then it lost its appeal.
From what I watched of Takeshi's Castle ... at least it seemed to mix up the games from week to week.

Like others have said, not a patch on Takeshi's Castle or Ninja Warrior, should have saved their money and bought the terrestrial rights for one of those...oh I almost forgot, prime time BBC1 has to be a British production!
I was going to mention this but didn't think anyone would care. Like "hole in the wall" this is a US format from last year that the BBC have bought in. It's pretty much the same as the US version (which, yes, is a rip-off of takeshi's castle, ABC/endermol are being sued). Even the presenters in the studio (they have two) and a chick on the course.
However the US version is much better. Their presenters and COTC are funnier than our two although they probably have better writers, and the third round changes each week (although the qualifier is subtle altered). Our version isn't called "wipeout" it's "Total Wipeout" presumably because wipeout was an excellent show with Mr Daniels. It didn't start on Saturday either, that was ep2.
See for yourself

The US version is way way funnier :D

Saw segment of the US version when on holiday in Australia way better and the presenters were really sarky towards the efforts of the contestants on the one I saw. UK one should have be presented by Stuart Hall.:notworthy

saw this weeks one, couldnt stop laughing...
Headband Dan kneeling down on the Sweeper and immediately getting annihaliated was hysterical!
Saw this weeks one, my god there are some people that are up their on backside on this, the bloke that wouldn't stop talking for one so it was poetic justice when he went out. Not sure why the BBC are trying to fool everybody by thinking that Richard Hammond in over there when he is probably in a studio in London, it is almost as if they released that Amanda Bryam wasn't good enough presenting it on her own so they shoehorned the mighty midget in.
My 3 year old son liked it. He thinks the people are landing poo rather than mud!
Amanda Byram is looking tasty.

Shame they removed the wall for the rope swing this week - nothing funnier than people swinging into the wall - SPLAT!!
They made that rope swing easier than last week as well, no one made it last week but this week most landed on it.

:gag: no way - there's something very 'Mrs Doyle' about her.
Didn't she used to have a massive mooooooooooley, moley, moley, moley mole when she was on the Big Breakfast?

They aren't. Hammond says he's in London and that the contestants are flown to Argentina in the intro.
AAh, I missed the into. That still doesn't answer the question as to why he is in London and the contestants are on the other side of the world.

Probably because it's much quicker and cheaper to have him do the links in a studio after everything's been filmed than it would be to fly him out and have him do the links on location.

yeah, this thing must be filmed in massive blocks for the various networks around the world. only thing that changes is the actual presenter on set.
one thing, what the hell are those black boxes on the back of the helmets?

I only saw 5 minutes of it but I assumed that the course is used for the same show for other countries (like what happens with I am a Celebrity). It has to be cheaper for the BBC to fly them out than construct their own course in a field somewhere.
one thing, what the hell are those black boxes on the back of the helmets? aren't they cameras? or battery packs for the cameras?

I tracked down the American version and watched a few episodes of that.
A petite woman from Alaska actually managed to cross the big balls - plucky girl.
The BBC have borrowed heavily from their presenting style. The way Hammond gives contestants nicknames for instance is a direct lift from the US show.
The Americans have used more varied obstacles too.
Instead of the topple towers, they've used cylinders that have to be 'log rolled' to cross them.
The punch wall has been used with and without the hand grips.
There's been a fast moving conveyor belt that contestant have to stay on. One week they were made to wear divers flippers. Another time, tennis balls were released onto it.
Instead of the rope swing, they've had a pole vault onto another lage rubber ball.
They've also had swing towards a wall with a human shaped cutout (star jump) that they have to pass through.
It's not taxing to watch but it does amuse me.

I've been loving the American version. It's been pretty great through Season 2 (And this weeks 'couples' episode was pretty funny).
And of course they get the lovely Jill Wagner.

For the first few minutes of TW I wanted to shoot myself - having been subjected to the truly terrible 'Totally Saturday' - but once people started taking some fairly big hits on the course I was loving it. :D
Good clean fun, and not a wailing wannabe popstar in sight. Although I'd love to see this combined with summat like X Factor. You wanna be a popstar? You'll have to impress the judges AND complete an obstacle course.

Ariel? She was brilliant! :luv:
I presume every version has their own contestants, rather than recycle the footage. I think the US course is in the US and I'd be surprised if every country used Argentina's
Some versions have their own contestants, some recycle the footage, and I understand at least one country even mashes up the footage. You are correct that the US one is filmed in California, but I think all other countries do use the Argentinean course.
Some use their own? Who doesn't and how do you know? Do they pretend they're using their own contestants?

Went back to double-check and turns out I slightly misinterpreted what I'd read. Turns out what it is is that Denmark, Norway and Sweden film all their contestants together, but each country takes that footage and edits it to make their broadcast show, so Denmark's show has the same contestants as Sweden, but their edit of the show will differ from Norway's, and Sweden will also make their own edit that differs from the other two.
A bit of a shame me getting that wrong; a mash-up version could've been pretty good, but I guess rights issues would make that v. tricky.
Okay, so they're essentially the same show though if they've got the same contestants. Are there any other countries who simply repackage another countries version?

Did the UK version come first and the Americans copied us?
Anyone else that's wondering why this show isn't in HD, you may be interested to know that it is planned..... But it won't happen for a couple of years.
I wrote the the BBC and got this email reply:
Thanks for taking the time to write to me. I agree with you that Total Wipeout is a great show - and would look amazing in HD. Unfortunately, the way that the show is made (I mean the terms of the contracts around it, rather than the cameras etc) mean that it is unlikely to happen in HD either this year or next. I have had a number of conversations around it but I can't see that changing so it will happen eventually but not for some time to come.
I do hope you can find other things to enjoy in HD in its place - and do keep watching it on BBC 1 of course.

The clue is in the bits you quoted:

There aren't many shows that the americans "copied" from us (ie bought the rights to remake a show). It could be argued that Wipeout is just a spin on Takeshi's castle.
I wonder what contracts are preventing them from doing it in HD? Maybe they rely on the equipment the Argentines provide or they have a deal with a supplier to use their equipment for x years?
Ariel? She was brilliant! :luv:
This week they did an All-star show and Ariel was one of those coming back. I won't say how she did though

Just had the "All New Total" version of this on the box in the background while waiting for Dr Who to come on.
What a load of crap.
It's like a mishmash of Gladiators and It's a Knockout but sanitised of all variety, battle, or any encouragement to get vaguely interested in the individual competitors.
Hammond being remote and totally dull doesn't help.
I presume the original TV company that dreamt it up has built the assault course in Argentina or wherever it is and just spends all year filming back to back for loads of different countries and then they inject the local commentator (Hammond in our case) later.
As Nan would say, "what a load of old ****". I won't be bothering with it again!

Correct, one of the other channels shows the American version which uses the same course. I have seen a few but after that they become a bit repetitive.

Basically the host broadcaster doesnt have HD so the contract will be in place for SD at a certain price.

With the US version, they don't use the Argentine course, but their own in California
Started watching this about a month ago, and do find it strangely addictive
US wipeout started last month in the US and was back this week after a week off. One of the contestants was brilliant! He should be the Stig of future wipeouts.
