Has anybody seen this excellent movie?
I only came across it by chance on a website - It is ranked in the alltime top 50 action movies on IMDB yet no-one I had spoken to had ever heard of it let alone seen it.
Thoughts - opinions?

Yeah saw it on Japanese DVD.

Its an interesting little film, but by no means deserves all the praise heaped upon it. The two central performances are quite good, although their "Oirish" accents are DREADFUL. Fun to se Dafoe camp it up as a gay gop, and the Big Yin turn up in the last reel. Other than that - nothing you ain't seen before. Obviously has a very big cult following though.

Should you see it & enjoy it- the Japanese DVD has extras by the bucketload, and is uncut - as opposed to the awful Canadian cut, P&S version.

Cut, maybe? But P&S? My Canadian version is definitely widescreen but not anamorphic (still a reasonable picture). It was also very cheap (less than 6 pounds) when TAU did there free postage offer.

It's a fun film but certainly not in the great category. Oh, the Canadian version is also R0.

Agree 100% with whitecot
I also got it in the TAU sale - having seen it on Sky a few times but always fallen asleep before the end....ahem

BTW - always worth checking *cough* DVDTimes for reviews - like this one (http://www.dvdtimes.org.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=538&story=2627)

I finaly saw this movie, I knew I'd love it so it was in my Favorite Criminals section ever since I got the R1 US DVD, wow!
Extremely stylish movie, lots and lots of scenes that I'd love to just take a screenshot of and put it on the wall, that's how good and beautiful it is, I absolutely loved it!
R1 DVD is single layered, not so good transfer, with director commentary, 8 deleted scenes in bad shape, outakes, and a trailer.
Now I gotta go get the songs and the score from it. :dork:

There's a sequel in production: 'Boondock II : All Saint's Day'.

yes, number 2 is due out this year - the first one was an excellent movie, shame it never got a big release

WOW! A sequel! Hmm, I don't know, it ended perfectly, and I was afraid it was some kind of fan service cash in but the same writer/director and 2 main stars are back, so that's already great.

Unfortunatly the R1 is cut, but there is a nice and cheap uncut version available in denmark (which i have) and from what i've heard the german (of all places) dvd is also uncut.

Only time ever heard of The Boondock Saints was when i used to play Action Half Life. It featured a few of the characters and gamers said how great the movie was... But i've not seen or heard of it anywhere since.

I was recommended this by my American roommate from Uni. I think it's an absolutely brilliant film. Great acting (apart from the aforementioned 'orish' accents), great storyline. Top notch action film :) I'm very happy there's a sequal coming out (although also slightly worried that it won't live upto the original)

Is the UK R2 cut? I know it's not anamorphic or 5.1 but it says on the BBFC website that it's "re-edited", but also says "no cuts". Anyone know? :help:

Anyone mind if I resurrect this thread? ;)

Would like to get the german uncut DVD, but cant find it at any german e-tailers. So does anyone know where I can get this?

Cheers

The UK R2 is cut, like the R1. I've seen the uncut version and don't understand why it wasn't released uncut with its 18 cert. Most of the gunfights have been trimmed immensely, mainly it's closeups of bullet hits.

R2 is 2.35:1 (non-anamorphic) and dolby 2.0 surround. No extras.

Funnily enough, I have heard that when it was shown on UK TV, it was uncut.

The German DVD is the best worlwide for it's uncut status, anamorphic transfer, 5.1 sound and the best extras - and it should be cheaper than the Japanese DVD (as DVD's are as expensive as a car in Japan ;)).

But where can I get it? :)

Hmm, that's another question:

Because it's not allowed to sell FSK 18 movies (the German rating system = over 18 years) online, you won't find it in online shops like amazon.de - but you can order it in swiss or austrian shops:

e.g. here (http://www.1a-dvdshop.ch/details/film1169920.asp)

Heads Up ! This has been on my "want to see, but not quite enough to warrant a purchase unless it's dead cheap" list for a while !

Sky Movies 9 - this Sunday night - 16/05 @ 22:15 (also - 14/06 @ 22:20 and 29/06 @ 22:00).

I heard from a friend of mine that if you watch the film with the commentary on the R1 Fox version you actually see the NC17 cut.

I haven't tested this out so I can't confirm it...

Allow me to give this a quick bump - anyone know where I can get hold of the German release of this? I noticed I've lost my region 1 (which I now find is hacked to pieces, by the looks of it so no loss) and need to get it back in the collection.

Help!

Cheers.

At the EIFF this year they showed a documentary about the guy who directed this film (forget his name) called 'Over Night'. Well worth checking out if you get the opportunity.

I managed to order the german release from that site 6 months back and I have to say it is an excellent dvd, well worth the investment (if you like the film of course)

Yes, but when I clicked the link it didn't work.

Tried it again just now, and its fine

Cheers, will order one of those I think (although its not cheap, is it?)

indeed. i saw the documentary at the EIFF and thought it was pretty good and quite funny. even if he is a complete fool you have to give the director a bit of credit for actually getting some recognition from the industry and then actually getting his film made after it all went horribly wrong (and then getting a sequel organised even after all that!). going by the posts here and the IMDB score some people even seem to like it so i will have to try and track it down sometime... :dork:

Play do the region 2 for about a fiver, its not a great release (cut, no extras), but if you're only interested in seeing the film it might do.

Have you received the DVD yet?

I really want to get this edition but Rewind states that the running time of the new unrated edition is almost identical to the old cut R1.

The only reason I can think of is differences in the titles or credits.

Is it definitely uncut?

I got a decent 5.1, anamorphic widescreen edition from http://www.dvdoo.dk/dvdoo/film.asp?Command=14815 last year. Great film.

Just watched it and it is totally uncut (having seen the cut and uncut versions previously). The cuts were very small (bullet hits etc.) so the running time isn't drastically increased in this uncut version.

Cool. I'll order it tonight then. I've only seen it once but I really love this film.

Looking forward to the Billy Connolly commentary as well. Hope he doesn't start talking about jobbies as usual.

watch the documentary Overnight. Which is all about the director of saints.
See why this was made with the cast it was and why it go hardly any publicity . Not a major spoiler but the director is a tool who aggrivated all he came into touch with. Even Harvey Weinstien who was originally going to get it made.

I have the Unrated Boondock Saints edition (R1) and it was the first time i saw the film recently. I think it's a great movie. There's lots to admire about the way it's shot and the action is quite stylised in a similar vain to some John Woo movies with use of the "slow-motion". It also raises interesting questions about the nature of vigiliantism at the end credits which i thought was a great touch. Was quite surprised to see 2 performers not as i'd ever seen them before:

Willem Dafoe as the gay, but tough talking, transvestite FBI agent, and comedian Billy Connolly as the tough-as-nails mob assassin!

Stuck this for about 40 mins before switching it off.
It was like something that had been written in a pub on the back of a beermat with lots of "wouldn't it be cool if..."
Absolutely ********** dismal.

I'm no fan of Boondock Saints but I'm intrigued by the fact that Troy Duffy was paid to make another film. Here's the trailer for Boondock Saints 2:
