View Full Version : Cheers - such a shame about Seasons 9-11

Just finished Seasons 9 and 10 that arrived over Christmas and feel a little disappointed. There was a huge delay after Season 8's release - to the point where it was unknown if the final three seasons would ever appear. They did, but what a disappointment. Cheap amaray cases rather than the nice digipacks of 1-8, transfers that don't stand up to the earlier seasons and on Season 9, some really clumsy editing of episodes that lose all the timing of the gag involved. Final season is due later this month and I'm not holding out much hope of an improvement.

Oh dear :( I've only got seasons 1-3 at the moment but will get the rest of them eventually.

I stopped buying after S9 was released (for said reason) kinda hoped all would be re-released "Friends" style in one big boxset, the way though they've been released lately suggests no boxset :( just have to wait and see.

I thought of switching to R2, but I guess they will be released in the same way, if they get released, there a good few Seasons behind (S6 the more recent)

EDIT
Just had a quick look on DVDPacific, I see there's a "Cheers: Eleven Season Pack [45 Discs]" due on the 27th Jan, I wonder what that consists of.

I thought that R1 was up to S10 on DVD - with the final season coming out this month? (Which would tie in with the inevitable 'Complete Series' set also coming out at the same time).

You thought correct! It's the editing that annoys me most. Compared a few with off-air recordings I had on VHS and they've made quite a few little tightens here & there, diving straight out after a punchline to one of the exterior street shots and losing all the mugging and blank looks that made the Woody/Norm/Cliff/Pauly set-pieces such a success.

Sounds maybe like they've used the 'syndi-cut' versions, the episodes where the running time was trimmed for syndication to fit in more ads. Has the theme tune also been shortened on those episodes? I only have seasons 1-4 on DVD, but I noticed the shortened theme tune on 1 or 2 episodes which gives it away that it's a syndicated version.
